The Oakland, California Homeless Problem is Beyond Belief

Is this where America is headed?
Oakland California sure does have a homeless problem. Driving around town, there’s homeless encampments all over the place. They’re on the side of the roads in dirt lots. There’s long stretches of them on sidewalks. Some of em are tents, some are RVs, some are actual encampments with makeshift structures where hundreds of people gather in communities.
It’s estimated there’s around 5,000 homeless individuals throughout the city of Oakland, but no one really knows the exact number. And the number of people on the streets in Oakland has nearly doubled in the last two years alone.
A lot of that has to do with the high cost of living in the Bay Area. Apartments that were once $1,000 a month now cost closer to $3,000 a month. A lot of the homeless are addicts. But there’s no real one reason homelessness is so high in Oakland. You ask 10 homeless people why they live on the streets and you’ll get 10 different answers.
Look at this one in West Oakland. This one is sort of sanctioned by the city - meaning they don’t run them off. Sometimes, it’s easier to keep them in one place so they can monitor them and provide support. But this problem is impacting the community in a big way.
Local businesses complain about losing customers. I mean would you want to park near here to shop? Residents complain about homeless people stealing from them. Neighbors complain about loud noise and trash. Some say helping the homeless is backfiring.
And the Oakland police are already stretched thin because of low numbers. There’s many reasons for that - you know, vaccine mandates, early retirements and being defunded.
I spent two days driving around Oakland, looking at how run down this once proud city has become. And along the way, I recorded all the homeless camps I saw. But there was one particular homeless camp that I stumbled onto which put into perspective the state of homelessness here in Oakland, and actually changed my perspective on the homeless problem in general.

Heaven came through for me in my finances too, getting $50,000 in 2months. I can support God's work and give back to my community. God is more than enough! Most of this is the result of sending all of the good paying manufacturing jobs overseas. When I was a teenager my friends worked at a shoe factory in Haverhill MA. They were bringing home $100,00 a week working piece work. At that time that was enough to buy a nice home and live a good life. When my father came home from WWII he got a job as an apprentice auto body man. He was taking home $19.00 a week. They bought a house on 2 acres of land for $1500 dollars. Within 7 years my father learned the trade and bought land where a new highway was being built in Southern NH. He paid $1,000.00 for the land, fixed and sold cars on the side while still on his job, and built a garage just as the highway was finished. He opened shop in 1954 and ran the business until he died in 1984. He was able to send his kids to college and made an execllent living for thirty years. My mom sold the business after he died for $ 350,000.00 and moved to AZ to retire. When people can't find good paying jobs, and housing is pricing out the lower income people, it will end in disaster.

Not really greediness per say, if your 4 bedroom house costs 1.6 million your mortgage payment is 10000k per month. Spit that 4 ways, that’s 2.5k, add taxes and insurance and your looking at 3k per room. It all comes back to home prices. The thing about inflation is it transfers wealth from 9-5 people and gives it to people with assets.

Few people understand that being homeless consumes a huge amount of time. It's like camping, but changing campsites every day and never having a reservation at the next site, rarely knowing where you can rest... and feeding yourself without money... and having to locate a bathroom every time you need to go to the bathroom. When you wake up, typically the first thing we all do is to pee. When I was homeless my days started searching frantically for somewhere to legally pee. Being homeless consumes so much time that it's just not feasible to also hold down a job. Not to mention, how do you apply for work and set up interviews without a phone number, without an actual address, without an internet connection? Employment is possible when housing is resolved. Housing must come first to really be able to hold down a job.

That time, after two months at my dad's, I found out he was committing heinous crimes. I never stayed homeless for more than three months. I had no help, but I had much ambition and a strong will. After one month, I found a nice job, worked hard, got a brand new car, and got a new house. You can make it if you work harder and make moves. Sometimes, you even have to move away to a different place.

The core issue is, the government that creates homelessness and dependency on programs and entitlements, is the same government that gets the funding for those programs and entitlements, be it federal or state. And THEY get to say, who does or doesn't get any assistance. They drag it out over time. Like Ohio said, it took him 15 years, working with programs and such, to get to a home and off the street. Seeing its present state, I cannot help but think as the man said: "solutions to every problem" Why can't FEMA deploy some habitats in that lot? Do it by barter. Make the persons there responsible for their community, give them a sense of pride. Clean it up and organize. What better way to show you are ready for change, than to make change. Sure, outsiders dumped their trash, but take pride in what is your home, even if you do not own it, and clean it up. They need an 8x8 room or 6x9. A roof over their head and a bed and a dresser. Shared bathrooms and showers. It will get people off the streets fir cheaper than if they were on the streets and cheaper than shelters. Far cheaper. All the millio s or billions isn't worker but tiny homes will. Make them out of concrete to last. A window, painted and a vent. Plus make the door have a window too. It cost money to constantly pay for street clean ups, to clean up human waste and hauling garbage away from homeless camps right? Spread of disease. Homeless people get sick far more often from infections and cold and compromised immunity and no toilets or showers. This costs money in medical/hospital bills and ambulance and police. Another thing people living with high stress, depression, hunger, cold, living in the dirt and rain, getting hated on and despised by the public, victims of rape, robbery attacks, insecurity and fear causes crime to greatly rise even violence and murder. So police, investigation, arrests, court costs and not to mention the cost to human lives and broken hearts. Then you got the cost of social workers, Shelters and other programs which can be astronomical. Another to think of is that many programs do little to no good at getting people out of homelessness or changing/improving lives although a few may provide a small temporary Comfort. Then the biggest reason is to save lives, Provide dignity and shelter and a place to call home and begin to heal. Providing mercy and compassion to people. Caring for people,e and having a heart. Improving lives. Safety, cleanliness, bathrooms, shelter, warmth. A place to call home

Really they are people too saying that they all addicts is a excuse for the city to despise them and treat them like animals. In lot's of cases these people can't afford to rent on a minimum wages. We are at least a bit more humane to our squatters in the first place they are not homeless. They have made a home from pallets. They have furniture there are communal toilets but they are not enough and not maintained by the city. There are communal taps. What Americans need is a riot by the poor. They can't shoot thousands of citizens. That being said supporting the Trumps of the government who hate the poor and refuse to help the poor. Using words like socialist communists when most of the people have no clue what it means fear mongering so they won't be the first ones attacked.

There is no way in hell that home is worth over $300,000 dollars. In our current area in Alabama the homes on our street were selling around $380,000 four years ago. The problem is Fraction Reserve Banking and printing $ to infinity. Inflation already happened...this is the result. Get ready because the Inflation chickens are coming home to roost and you can add a zero to your numbers. Greedy developers set their prices based upon what it costs them to build. That price is increasing on a daily basis and will continue to increase until people see Inflation for what it is...The State printing $. Those dollars must land somewhere and that somewhere is Real Estate, Food, Healthcare, etc.
@actualsurfer

@@tsormmh3590 How exactly do municipalities increase property value??? They can increase property taxes but demand sets the price along with Inflation. If anything, higher taxes result in DECREASING property value since they are another hurdle toward ownership. Inflation is NOT rising prices. Inflation is the printing of $ by Central Banks everywhere. The printing has already occurred... Rising prices for real estate and all things is a CONSEQUENCE of the Inflation. Unfortunately, people will continue to misunderstand this concept and that misunderstanding will lead to more Money Printing aka Inflation. Thos dollars will need to find a home and that will drive prices even higher...rinse and repeat.
