To say things didn't go to plan on our trip to the South Pacific is the understatement of the year. After our crewing opportunity to Fiji got cancelled, we decided to stay in Papeete to help a consulting client look at a boat for sale there. For some reason, they would NOT let us aboard. We think we might have found out why! We made the best of it and got out to the lovely Mo'orea where we missed being part of the cruising community. The boat hunt continues!
AG1 by Athletic Greens is a comprehensive, nutrition drink engineered to fill the nutritional gaps in your diet and support your body’s nutritional needs across four pillars of health: Gut health, Immune support, Energy and Recovery! 2005 I made the mistake to honeymoon with my girlfriend at the time in one of those beautiful water bungalows you showed. It was the make or break trip of our relationship. I’ve never forgotten that trip, we were young and as young people do, we did…. Soon after, life took us in different directions… C’est la vie! That time, I knew sailing was going to be a part of my life. I’m sailing, now. Married and still dreaming of someday mooring my boat off Cook’s Bay. Sometimes you take an expensive treat, sometimes you make an expensive trip, sometimes you just live…. No regrets! Best wishes on your new vessel!

A comment about boat brokers: Like car salespeople, they don't necessarily know what they are doing or, for that matter, they may not know very much about the boat that they are selling. It is a job. Their motivation: The commission. That is one issue but the more serious issue is this: Non-disclosure or mis-representation. It is a constant problem (everywhere; not just French Polynesia!) On top of that is the often poor quality of the available surveyors. You may find that they too don't know what they are doing (even though they are certified). So, very often, you are totally on your own. Be careful! One last piece of advice: Do NOT fly 1/2 way around the world before you are certain about the boat. Get a reputable buyer's broker to inquire through his contacts. Boats (and boat brokers) acquire reputations. As for the mystery boat in the video? It is on Yachtworld. I saw it too. If you are curious, do some research.

Hi Lovers, this blog brings back such amazing memories as I purchased a cat in Mexico some 12 years ago and did the milk run back to Australia. Stopped in at Papeete, Morea etc for 6 weeks (not long enough) and was asked by a friend to have a look at a boat for them in FP… had the same issues with the local broker … total con artist… btw if you need advice in Australia please reach out.. I’ve built over 60 ocean going cats in my life but now at 70 am looking to slow down … Pete

Hello Pete, Enjoyed your comment and couldn’t help but see the obvious benefit of an episode with you and the O’K crew going over options and experience! (CAN WE PUT IN FOR A REQUEST, GUYS?) People think they can save a lot of money building things, but the reality is it may cost the same, if not more in my experience…because you just won’t cut corners when you are building something that you need to work well and last. Any experience with outside the box materials or designs? I have always wanted to develop hydrofoil usage to much more utilitarian levels, for instance. Just seems like a no brainer…

I once saw an entire backyard adjoining two properties in a track house Suburbia bucketed out 55 ft deep and about 80 ft wide because an oil pipeline ruptured in this backyard property line bubbling to the surface. The homeowners on either side of the lot line had no idea there was an oil pipeline there before their houses were built. None of their disclosure documents stated it.

Hi, been following your channel for a while now and thanks for the great info and entertaining videos you put out. Since you are looking for a new boat can you do a short video on insurance? I am looking to go cruising next year and in the process of looking for the right boat and insurance seems to be a big hurdle here in Florida. Specifically what I would like to know is, ball park % of boat value to budget for insurance? Do I really need full insurance if I own my boat? (Do most marinas REQUIRE full insurance?) If I do not have experience on similar size boat are the ASA certs worth it, what other options are there other than learning on the fly? I am certain I am not the only one interested in the subject.

had to look up natch. slang means naturally. Yeah so many people want way more than there boat is worth and having someone with experience look at it is a must. The biggest thing is leaks that mold the balsa core as its organic and can spread everywhere. I see most when being a used sailboat plan on new rigging. reseal windows(replace) at a minimum. So many buy a boat use it for 10 years with no up keep being done so even engines could be on last leg. I bad buy can cost you over $100,000 to get it safe and working. I like that you help others. hopefully at a reasonable rate.

I was not surprised when you revealed the reason for not being allowed on the boat. Poeple that "know to much" and 'think for themselves" are no longer welcome in wide circles today. The society in general has deteriorated markedly from 50 years ago. I hate labels so I want use any. But the following may help you a bit. Trust is very fragile. It is an integral part of all useful relationships. Because your knowledge and straight shooter ways are known and they did not want to develop any kind of relationship with trust in it. I am continuing to find this sad and disturbing both. It takes all 4 words: Respect, trust, hope, and gratitude to define any form of useful relationship. That you for the data point. Great lesson in how this are today. Beam me up Scotty. There is no intelligent life here. The two of you excepted. I am grateful for the two of you.

I am considering having built for me their 13.6 meter Power cat. 2500-3000nm on 800 gallons @ approximately 10kn if my math is correct. I would rig a Parasail or similar for a downwind boost and for sailing fun. At 10,000kg it should be heavy enough for a good ride. Burn 70/30 Veg oil/Kerosene to cut emissions and odor. 14:20 this is good advice for any large acquisition, especially if it's' something you've been dreaming of having for a while. Similar to having a crush, it's easy to miss or overlook even serious issues when you're in that state and more so when you're young or lack experience. An objective wingman can point out issues and possibly save you from taking on a lot of damage that will cost you dearly to deal with. Do that once or twice and your life will feel nothing like sailing.

The same happened to us back in 1999. My husband flew down to Golfito, Costa Rica to pick up a 44 CSY that we thought we were buying. Flew 3 crew in from HI and he flew down from Arkansas. They were going to sail the boat back to HI. As it turned out the boat was totally misrepresented. The pictures they had sent were not the current boat. It had furling boom sails which had been cut, the engine was not working, it was a mess. My husband had taken his sat phone with him and called me and said get us out of here in the morning. They had flown into a very small strip and ended up taking a bus on a 12 hour bus ride back up to San Jose to catch flights back to HI and Arkansas. We were out $10,000 in flight cost. Live and learn.

Wow a reef and it took on water(balsa core if in that boat would be bad) I like how most new boats do not use balsa core anymore. Even marine plywood rots. So if someone bought a bought in Fiji and they were not informed about hull damage then resold it in say America they would be liable right?

Looking on YachtWorld, there is only 12 boats listed. Not hard to figure out to which one you are referring. 😉 French law is different than what you would be familiar with in North America. Can't wait to see you guys there on your own craft.

Point is not this particular boat, which was misrepresented in several ways. The point is to be very careful buying downwind. A gent came up to us at the Annapolis boat show last year and told me a very sad story about buying a boat in Panama. He was suckered out of $100k. Buyer, be very aware

@@TheOKellys I hear similar stories about buying in Greece, too. It's good that you were consulting with them so they knew what questions to ask! Sometimes it pays to use an experienced broker as a buying agent too. Sure, it will cost more but, in the end, unless you are well experienced, buying a boat without assistance is dicey.

What an interesting posting today kids! I'm just so surprised that a potential buyer would go that far, spending all that travel funding, only to find that the boat was so misrepresented! I feel so sorry for him, but at least you were nearby to help him get through it all. Having been to the Society Islands on a cruise ship, I so remember how absolutely stunning that part of the word is!

@@TheOKellys Yes. We sailed from Puerto Vallarta to FP in April / May and I misinterpreted the Visa rules. I left Aug1 after 83 days in FP so I can only spend 7 days there before Nov9. I am trying to get a 'Long Stay' visa. Not sure it will work. I just watched your episode where you sailed with Annie and Eric. I first met them in Greece when I was crewing on a Catana 42 (great boat!) and have met again a couple times since. They are fun people! If you are in San Diego again, give me a shout. If we are in town, we have an extra room you could stay in. We are 1 block from the water at Ash and Pacific Hwy. Pat

I agree with what everyone is saying on here to have a reputable source/sources go look at the boat or do a survey on a boat etc.! But I just had a couple questions and hopefully you can answer them for me please the O’kelley’s. First question is why is it a big deal that the boat hit a reef and was taking on water? Yes I know the obvious answer lmao! I’ve been boating since I was a baby and have had 4 boats myself in my 37 years of life but the reason I ask why is it a big deal leads me to my other questions. So the first one was why is it a big deal that it hit a reef and was taking on water? Second one, how bad was the damage? How much water did the boat take on? Did it sink and then was re-floated? Was it repaired correctly or incorrectly? The reason I ask these questions is because you guys had explained a little bit of the situation in that it just hit a reef and that it took on water and that the broker didn’t disclose this information. But just because a boat hits a reef and takes on water or hell even halfway sinks, as long as the boat is repaired correctly and by licensed and reputable people, I don’t see a problem with buying the boat. But you guys may have a short answer for me which is… it wasn’t repaired correctly or was only repaired just enough to get it sold lol! Thank you for your time and you guys keep up the amazing work, I love your guys channel!!! Oh and one other question would it not be able to be insured again? 😊

You ask a very good question, and we don’t have an answer because we did not see the boat. Almost anything can be repaired and whether it should impact the value of the boat is a question of documentation. This is precisely why we didn’t identify the boat. We didn’t have sufficient information. However, and I pose this question to you in the video…do you think this kind of thing should be disclosed to a buyer before they spend a lot of money to come see the boat? I think so…at least the buyer can ask for documentation….the buyer can ask to see a surveyors report. In this particular case, the reef encounter was just one of several misrepresentations.

@@TheOKellys oh ok I gotcha and I figured that might have been why you didn’t say what boat it was and stuff like that but I didn’t know if you had talked to your friend about it afterwards or not. But yes I’m on board with you 100% that the buyer should be aware of what has happened to the boat prior to them looking at it or possibly purchasing it! If they had a good surveyor report that would tell them a lot about how well it was repaired or how bad it was repaired but I agree that’s ALOT of money wasted to go look at a boat that was misrepresented!! He would’ve been better off just catching all that money on fire lol. Three good things came of this though, first one… he learned what he needs to ask before spending that kind of money to go look at a boat. Second one…. he got to go see a very very awesome place being Tahiti. And the third one…. he got to hang out with you two 👍🏼🤘🏼🤙🏼👏🏼👌🏼 lol.!
