Roast Beef I am 100% non employable. VA gives me about 3000$ minus 800 for child support for a child I have no contact with him. No legal help. Can’t afford a lawyer SSD denied me cuz I have a degree. So again VA or the government don’t help

In perspective: When I was a Specialist in 2018 with 3 year TIS, I was making $950 bi-weekly after all applicable taxes (I had no dependents and I was living in the barracks and had a meal card for the DFAC). I was stationed in Kansas, but still carried my home state of residence (Texas) so no income tax was applied to me. If I could have chosen, I would have opted out of the barracks and meal card. Lots of cheap housing off post to rent or eventually buy and I could live off ramen noodles.

I was a E3 when I deployed and I got full California bah on top of base pay and also hazard pay and food allowance and it totaled to 5k a month for 11 months all tax free . I’m also in the reserves and now I got into AGR as a E4 and I’m getting full BAH and everything . So it’s still possible to get more than just base pay even before you make rank ! Consider the reserves ! There’s a lot of perks that not many people know about ! You can still be active duty in reserves

Nicky you are soooooo right about the TSP, I’m retired as a ART from the Air Force after 37 years as a E8. Between my retirement pay and my TSP I’m making more then I was while I was working. You are also correct about the Roth IRA use that and pay tax now on it. Taxes are kill ing me now because they didn’t have it in the beginning of the TSP and I never swap over.

You can contribute up to $6,000 per year into an IRA or roth IRA (7k for people age 50 or older). It is extremely smart to put in the $6,000 annually or as much as you can possibly manage. If you are at e1-3 pay you very likely want to contribute on a roth IRA basis if the military is your only form of income. When you get to higher base pay you need to think about if you expect your income now is going to be higher than when you are retired and pulling money from your IRA

You will not have to pay the 100 dollars a month for the first year if you change to the post 9/11 Gi bill in bootcamp. Also if you come into the military after 2017 you will be in the BRS and will only be getting 1% match for the first two years then you will get the full 5% match. Best advice is to change your tsp fund to at least the L2050 if you don’t want to mess with it and get solid returns.

Under the blended retirement system, you get 40% of your base pay for the rest of your life instead of 50% (old system). If you do more than 20 then the % goes up. This is true in both systems. In the blended, the government will match what you put into your TSP up to 5%. I suggest putting all 5% because it’s free (as in, the government gives you an extra 5%).
