As the global geopolitical landscape undergoes significant transformations, the nuclear threat has taken on new dimensions. The Russia-Iran relationship is growing stronger. Khamenei endorsing Russia’s war in Ukraine - which has given Tehran more leverage in the bilateral relationship - while both countries try to weather unprecedented Western sanctions. Nonetheless, Russia’s ties with Iran remain complex, characterized by areas of cooperation, stalled plans and competition across various domains. Iran / Russia - best frenemies?

Nicole is a Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She is an Associate at Harvard’s Belfer Centre and Author of the forthcoming book “Russia and Iran: Partners in Defiance from Syria to Ukraine”. Her areas of expertise include Russia, the Middle East & North Africa, international relations, international security and defence, military intervention.

I have had similar experiences. The folks I have met are very friendly, and open with Americans, Their contempt is for the US govt, not Americans. All individual interactions I have experienced have been very positive. Even during 'the hostage days' I found this to be true.

Czechia here, same experience. A Persian Christian was marrying one of my friends, I performed a traditional Persian dance at their wedding (I didn´t do so well, a pretty average performance) and a group of Persians came and praised the dance, saying how truly Persian it was, and thanked me and gave me food...

I've not watched the whole video yet, but Iran for a time would have been experts in evading American sanctions and boycotts. I expect the Kremlin is using all the help they can get in that arena.

Russian view of sovereignty was voiced a while ago by Peskov or Lavrov if memory serves: If a country can't defend itself against [russian] attack, it's not a sovereign country.
