Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks is one of the more obscure texts in Friedrich Nietzsche’s corpus. There are many good reasons for this: it is unfinished, and ends abruptly; it was never published; and it concerns subject matter that is not as immediately accessible as Nietzsche’s more popular writings. You will not find his major concepts in this work - such as the will to power, or the critique of metaphysics - except insofar as those ideas appear in the background, inchoate, unnamed… not yet fully formed. In Nietzsche’s interpretation of the Pre-Platonic philosophers of Ancient Greece, we find the starting place for his later philosophical career. The inspiration for many of those great ideas, can arguably be found in his exegesis of these extraordinary figures from the Hellenic world, from the 6th to the 4th century BC. In this series we’ll consider Nietzsche’s view of Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles & Democritus.

Thanks again for presenting this barely known book. I knew Nietzsche's notes about the pre-platonics, but the actual book was totally unknown for me. It is a must read not only to Nietzsche, but also to history. Parmenides' static being contributed to the middle ages and also to modern essentialist views on class, nation, race, blood and soil. After 2500 years it is still with us, and we don't even recognize it!!! The Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks made a huge impact on my youtube channel. Its time to have more nicheless channels where individuals can present their synthetic understanding of the world, stimulating others to find their own way.

I had to disagree with Whitehead's claim that the history of philosophy is a series of footnote to Plato, I'd argue it's a series of footnote to Parmenides

Have you ever read Oswald Spengler? I think "the decline of the west" would be a wonderful book to cover.

This. Maybe something tracking the path from J.J. Bachofen's Mutterrecht to Nietzsche's Birth of Tragedy to Spengler's Untergang.

@@core-nix1885 recently picked up Spengler's TDOTW. Found a very nice hardback copy at a decent price. Pretty dense material but fascinating. First learned of Spengler through a book by Leon Marvell "the physics of transfigured light: The imaginal realm and the hermetic foundations of science." Fricken excellent.

I think the first fundamental mistake in Parmenides thought is that he confuses a conceptual reduction of becoming to a transaction between being and nothing with a metaphysical relationship. We are humans and as such we need concepts to understand becoming, but often we confuse our concepts for metaphysical Truths. The second mistake was that Parmenides treated logical principles as if they could preserve their validity even outside any conceptual schemes. We modern people have the benefit of knowing about alternative logical systems that can function even without some of the fundamental principles that ancient philosophers took for granted, paraconsistent logic comes here to mind. I think the fact that the internal logic of a conceptual scheme is in contradiction with what we directly experience tells us more about the nature of this specific conceptual scheme then about the nature of reality.

Have you read "ancient philosophy: mystery and magic, Empedocles and Pythagorean tradition" by Peter Kingsley? Highly suggest taking a look at this work. One of the best books I've come across on Parmenides, Empedocles, Pythagoras, and Greek philosophy in general. Very scholarly but from the perspective of a mystic that can put the ideas into proper context.

Maybe that points to the missing part of philosophy: we have left out the ideas of half of humanity. 😂
