Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks is one of the more obscure texts in Friedrich Nietzsche’s corpus. There are many good reasons for this: it is unfinished, and ends abruptly; it was never published; and it concerns subject matter that is not as immediately accessible as Nietzsche’s more popular writings. You will not find his major concepts in this work - such as the will to power, or the critique of metaphysics - except insofar as those ideas appear in the background, inchoate, unnamed… not yet fully formed. In Nietzsche’s interpretation of the Pre-Platonic philosophers of Ancient Greece, we find the starting place for his later philosophical career. The inspiration for many of those great ideas, can arguably be found in his exegesis of these extraordinary figures from the Hellenic world, from the 6th to the 4th century BC. In this series we’ll consider Nietzsche’s view of Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles & Democritus.

11:03 "the whole of reality is in some sense unscientific and thus anytime somebody dares to give a description of existence itself or the universe itself one necessarily has to go beyond the sciences and become philosophical even as they draw upon the power of the Sciences to seek out the causes and reasons for everything." The forerunners of science were concerned with HOW to think. Contemporary scientists mostly seem self-satisfied that the "how" is a done deal. No need to be concerned about it anymore.

All I can think of is Grazie Mille. I can’t formulate anything else or better to say than Thank You, so I say in Italian, imagining it’s more poetic.

I love your work. (art) I am an Artist from Swiss. (As I see that Nietzsche liked Goethe "conversations with ... " - what do you think about Rudolf Steiner, which wrote "Die Philosophie der Freiheit" " Philosophy of liberty"? - as he declares it as a continuation of Goethes work? )

„Out of water, earth has evolved“ sounds similar to the position hydrogen takes in the modern scientific worldview. I can make sense of the Idea that there is one substance, and that it’s primitive form is water. But if we take „all is water“ at face value, then it is hard to make sense of the proposition. To me, the concept of water is defined by a range of possible properties that are conditioned by temperature and pressure. So it would seem like a truism, that materials like stone, wood and metal are not water. So I wonder if he had a completely different concept of water then modern day people have? Beyond that, I wonder if there is something deeper about his philosophy that has been lost to history. Imagine if we would only know Heraclitus as the philosopher of fire. Fire seems to be only at the surface of his philosophy of flux, and fire as the Arche only makes sense if you consider it to be flux.

@@untimelyreflectionsAI images are distasteful, just put a nice William Blake drawing instead. Even if it’s unrelated it’s more pleasant to look at than some soulless desecration of a face that’s lost to time. (This is written half in jest)
