In 1917, after the Russian Revolution and Russia's withdrawal from the war, the Poles began organizing military units to fight on both the Eastern and Western fronts.
As the war neared its end in 1918, the Central Powers weakened, and independence movements emerged in several occupied territories, including Poland. On November 11, 1918, Germany signed the Armistice of Compiègne, marking the end of hostilities and paving the way for the reestablishment of Poland as an independent state.
On November 28, 1918, the country officially regained its independence, and Józef Piłsudski became Chief of State. Although Poland regained its independence, it faced considerable challenges in establishing and consolidating its government and territory, as it had to confront internal conflicts and wars against its neighbors to define its borders.
The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 recognized the restoration of Poland and granted additional territories, but the situation remained complex and tense with neighboring nations. Polish independence was again threatened during the Polish-Soviet War in 1920, but the country managed to defend its territory.
