New research aimed at understanding the impact of social media on adolescent brains is already showing fascinating results. The National Institutes of Health study is following more than 11,000 children over a decade. Anderson Cooper spoke to the researchers for Sunday's "60 Minutes." Psychologist and CBS News contributor Lisa Damour joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss the study.

I'm 26 now but I've been using computers and smartphones since I was 9 probably. I grew up in a computer geek family. I played neopets, club penguin, and then myspace to Facebook. I don't remember a time in my life when I didn't have some sort of distraction device. It's wild to see how it affects me now. I've been working on getting off social media and trying to focus on other hobbies. Social media is a drug and a whole different reality.

ok. so, my school right now is making me watch this video for homework. A video saying that school age children shouldn't be spending so much on screens. Meanwhile, my school is making me watch this video, while also making me do homework about it, on the computer. Then, after completing that, I have to go to more homework on the computer. Hey, also, I wonder what is causing the rates of depression to be so high. It must be these darn screens and not the schools. The schools that make us watch obviously hypocritical things like this, tell us that it's the screens that make us depressed, and don't take a second to think about whether or not its the schools themselves that make the depression and anxiety rates so high. What a great system

Hey students here because they’re doing homework :) quick question do you think the problem that they’re discussing is about is screen time or about using screen time to go on social media? Is being on the computer and online because you’re doing research as risky to mental health as being on it for the same length of time to go onto social media?

In Denver where I live, I see teens and pre teens using smart phones regularly.....It is a virtual certainty that their parents bought them smart phones or gave them permission to buy one... It is well established that too much screen time is unhealthy whether it is T.V. a smart phone or anything else. This is just another example of how marketers and advertisers use "The culture of Kool" to sell their products. But Kool is not how you act...Kool is how you react.....
