Of course he didn't listen to me. For James, one world title was enough. He had proved what he needed to prove. To himself and anyone who doubted him. And two years later, he retired. When I saw him next in London, seven years later, me as a champion again, him as broadcaster, he was barefoot on a bicycle with a flat tire, still living each day like his last. When I heard he died age 45 of a heart attack, I wasn't surprised. I was just sad. People always think of us as rivals but he was among the very few I liked and even fewer that I respected. He remains the only person I envied.
@y_fam_goeglyd
@y_fam_goeglyd Ай бұрын
@@Christopher_TG He was my (as they say these days) "tween heartthrob". Though tbh, it was his driving that I really loved. My dad had been a rally driver until I was a baby (Mum said she could manage being a widow with two older daughters - preteens at the time, but not with another {unexpected!} baby), so my genes were always going to take me there. 😂 I was utterly heartbroken when he passed, and stunned with shock. He was such a character and a far _far_ better driver than he ever got credit for.

One of Hunts most respectable moments was when he pulled Ronnie Peterson out of his burning car and stopped him from looking at his legs. I have no doubt that when Lauda passed, James had a cold beer waiting for him.

They were really great mates. 100% respect either way, even though you'd assume Lauda to have been too strict to not get annoyed by Hunt's "Jack the Lad" behaviour. Just goes to show that Niki wasn't as uptight as people thought and James was a lot more sympathetic, especially with his friends.

@@y_fam_goeglyd After his birthday party Lauda went to bed at 11, because they had testing the next day.Hunt, who Lauda had invited, stayed up and showed up at the airport the day after, five minutes before Lauda had told him was the departure time, in the same clothes from yesterday. After Lauda flew them down to Spain in his plane, the test was paused because of a crash and Lauda eventually found Hunt pulled over on the side in his race car, sleeping. They were great friends and Lauda clearly was willing tp put up with his antics.
