Not before winning 2 more championships. Drivers those days like Lauda and Jackie Stewart drove with the high chances of death at the back of their minds in every race. Modern F1 drivers not so much, had the death statistics continue to be high, you can bet most would retire after winning 3-4 world titles.

I've read somewhere that he went back to the scene of his crash some years later with some friends....a fan spotted him...was in awe and asked him what he was doing there.... Nikki's reply....oh.. just looking for the other part of my ear!!!! legend

There are F1 drivers, that had more success, that have more titles and more records under their belt, but in terms of sheer badassery, no one comes close to Niki Lauda, a man that nearly died in a horrible crash, was severely injured and despite all that, a month later, went back to racing.

Drivers in those days like Lauda and Jackie Stewart drove with the high chances of death at the back of their minds in every race. Modern F1 drivers not so much, had the death statistics continue to be high, you can bet most would retire after winning 3-4 world titles, maybe only just 2 titles, as there are 2 times more races in a year now.

I remember the accident well. We had been following F1, and were shocked at the accident. In my mind, Lauda is still one of the Great Champions. I was 8 years old when he crashed.

Niki Lauda was one of the most determined men in history in my opinion. After being on death's doorstep, comes back to win the championship 2 more times, then after leaving racing, decides "Oh, well I suppose I'll create an airline now and pilot one of my fleet aircraft". I can't imagine a more impressive comeback than that. He will always be remembered for these things, and I'm sure he will continue to inspire more generations of ambitious young people everywhere.

It gets crazier still. When one of his planes crashed, Niki was absolutely horrified. Investigatiors concluded a thrust reverser had activated in flight. (It redirects engine airflow to help stop a plane on the ground - a technical glitch caused it to make an uncommamded deployment in flight, as there wasn't a fail-safe.) Boeing, the company that made the plane, said such an event would _not_ be catastrophic (...once they finally admitted it could even happen). First they tried to blame the engine manufacturer. When this was disproven (the engine had functioned correctly; it has recieved a false signal from the plane), they claimed pilot error. "They could have recovered if they had done 'this' and 'that'." Niki was absolutely furious, and after 15 attempts in a flight simulator, concluded it was not recoverable at all. Niki demanded Boeing make a public announcement to absolve the crew of any blame. Boeing responded by saying it would take months for the legal team to "adjust the wording". Lauda actually told Boeing that if they did not release a statement _the next day,_ he would personally take an identical plane and deploy a reverse thruster in mid air under similar conditions, with media present, just to prove it was recoverable like Boeing had publically claimed. Boeing realized he was dead serious, and they finally admitted that the pilots had no hope of recovering the flight. TL;DR: Niki Lauda was a badass (and borderline maniac) who did not fear death.

My brother (who is studying to become a pilot) suggested that Boeing and Lockheed are tied together so closely that they can afford the ability to cut corners and get away with (most of) the consequences. Compare this to Airbus, who at least have to _pretend_ they care about safety for the sake of staying in business.

grosjean came close he got lucky that he was easily removeable from the cockpit, that he had modern fire retardant, and the halo all saved his life of 28 seconds in that fireball

I watched it with my Grandpa and when I saw him for the first time as a co-host, I asked why he looked like this (I was 10 and that was in the high time of Schumacher) my grandpa didn't really explain it to me bc I was so young. I remember seeing him as a little kid on TV and being really frightened by his appearance- it must have been around the time of the crash. My dad told me his name and what happened to him. Even though we never followed F1 it left a lasting impression on me.

i met Nikki at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, he was the nicest man i have ever had the pleasure to talk to. Its incredibly hard to believe that a man having gone through so much could be so open and kind. Nikki will forever be one of the greats in my mind.

The greatest comeback story, not just in F1, but in all sports. I remember seeing "Rush" in theatres, and my first thought was of how are they going to depict Lauda's crash. It happened a couple years before I was born, but I've been an F1 fan for a solid thirty five years, and the story if Niki Lauda been legendary to me. Daniel Bruhl did an incredible job as Lauda.

Wow! I sure wish I could have met this man! Also, I wish I could have met all of the men involved in his rescue. They are the absolute real deal. I still have goosebumps! You did a great job on this video! I have always loved racing both Formula One and Stock car. My new husband (M 1982-2016) was all about basketball and American football. He was incredulous when the Indy 500 was coming up and I was so excited! He had never watched it. (I then was incredulous!) LOL I was born and raised in Ohio so my whole family liked the Indy race. I also HAVE to watch The Triple Crown races too. He said cars going around in a circle...bah. Until he watched it. He was addicted to Nascar as bad as I was and Formula One. He had never watched horse racing, but he got into horse racing and I learned about football and basketball. I was always a baseball fan, since I was born in a suburb if Cincinnati. (Hamilton).

I JUST HIT ME: Without his injuries, he would have ended up looking exactly like Monty Burns! Even before the accident, he looks like a young Mr. Burns. It's almost like they based the character on Lauda!! 😅😂
