Interesting and short, "to the point review". I will be using the lens with a D810 and a Z7II in the regular abd DX crop mode. I hope my photos are sharp and capable to being enlarged with the large megapixel Nikon cameras. In wet weather, I plan on using the best weather protection I can find, your points of the lens NOT being weather protected is well taken. Yes, the lens in not as expensive as the lenses you mentioned in your review, nor do they have the reach. Many of the reviews of this lens are very positive, I am hoping my experience will be the same. A monopod, tripod or some sort of stabilizing method is probably the best way to go, for stability. Sounds like you have it all well planned out! I wish you every success, the Z7 II and this lens will be nice setup, especially in DX Crop mode. A monopod will help but with IBIS and VR it's a very usable combo!

Thanks for the review! I have a D7200 and really looking for a super zoom for wildlife... Have you tried the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary or Tamron 150-600mm G2? I am really debating the $1,400 of Nikon vs Sigma’s $900 (including USB dock)... is the $500 difference justifiable? Thanks again

So, I'll be honest, I have not used the 150-600, however, I'd go with the Nikon based on the constant 5.6 aperture and the fact I genuinely think the image quality is outstanding. I have D7200 and 200-500 attached to it ,at 500mm the lens does not focus on the subject I have to zoom out to 200 mm for focusing ,is it due to my D7200 body please reply thank you

That sounds very odd, I'd get it checked by a repairer.

Hi Christopher, I just bought the same Lens after I watched your review. Thanks for the nice review. BTW I have an issue with rotating the Lens Collar. I can rotate clockwise for portrait but I cannot rotate back anti-clockwise for landscape. I have to rotate the rest 270 degree to get back to landscape position. Basically I can rotate only one direction, I can feel something is preventing to rotate opposite direction. Does your Lens has the same issue? Please let me know if easy for you to help me.

Hi there, sorry for the delayed response, that's definitely not correct, I can rotate mine both ways with no issues. I'd definitely get that checked! This being said, the collar is removable, and there is a point where the collar comes off the lens when rotating, are you getting the collar stuck in that position?

Thanks for your response. I also asked some other KZfaqr and they said the same as you. And they suggested to put a little bit force when I try to turn it back. And that is right, once I put a little bit of force first I can feel and hear click then I can turn the other way back. However thanks again for your response. 👍

I am torn between a sigma 300 f2.8 and 1.4 convertor, this 2-500 f5.6, or the older 2-400 f4. All secondhand and on an DX body. Whilst the 400 is more expensive (1.5k ish) the internal focusing and weather sealing are appealing. Anyone have thoughts and/or experience to share?

Oh interesting. I LOVE my 200-500 but the previous 200-400 F4 VR and a 1.4 teleconverter would be VERY appealing and an effective combo

Sir i don't want to give false information but z6 and z7 IBIS do deactivate when the adapted lenses have VR

Hi there, thanks for your comment. You are actually incorrect. VR and IBIS work together but you go from 5 axis to 3 axis ibis 😉

@@HamerReviews I'm not sure about it, as far as I know they don't work in conjunction, i would recommend to take a second look to the manual .. btw IBIS is only 3 axis when is not a Z lens only Z lenses has 5 axis

@@HamerReviews info agree with you, but it doesn't specify if is talking about all d, g and Z line or only Z line, i understand that's 70-200mm 2.8S do work together but previously they said G and E lenses with VR will deactivate IBIS in camera.. just attach your camera with ftz and take a look at ibis menu or rear views if is active

Tried this lens against my 400mm f2.8 lens at a nighttime game under floodlights and its very slow in focusing compared to my 400mm f2.8 and not as sharp

I actually found focus speed to be very snappy on my Z6 - not far off my 70-200 2.8 with teleconverter. I’d hope the 400 2.8 was sharper though, as again that’s comparing a top of the line pro telephoto prime with a much cheaper entry level super telephoto zoom. That being said, I’ve got some stunningly sharp nature photos out of it - so as ever might depend on situation 🙂. Thanks for your comment, very envious of your 400 2.8 😉

@@NikCan66 makes sense, that’s where 2.8 is killer! 🙂 I’d like to get my hands on the newer 80-400 and compare it to this but that extra 100mm means it isn’t one for me - 500mm is excellent

@@HamerReviews I had used the 80-400 nikon lens is ok in the day but utter shit at night-time games. F5.6 is not as sharp against the 200-500mm f5.6

That’s interesting, it sounds like you do a lot of night photography - admittedly the worst I get is dusk - so I can see you have a very different set of requirements! Interesting it’s not as sharp - I’d have expected the opposite!

Try the lens on a newer camera than the D300! The D300 is very old and outdated...

The D300 can still drive this at full tilt. Also, most test shots were made with the Z6 and Z50 at the time - which was pretty much as good as you could get at the time of filming.
