The Nikon Z 24-120 f4 S might just be my new favourite landscape photography lens. In this video I'm going to make the case why this brand new lens for the Nikon Z Mount is pretty close to perfect for those looking for a versatile, lightweight and optically stellar lens for landscape photography.
If you own the Nikon Z 24-120mm F4 S lens yourself, I would be very interested to hear from you. Do you like this lens and why? How do you feel it compares to the other lens options available? As always if you have enjoyed watching please consider liking or subscribing in support of my channel 😊

It's so good optically... I sold my 24-70mm f/2.8 S VR for it! I didn't come out of that deal with much extra money, but I did get that extra 50mm!!! This 24-120mm f/4 S is the Goldilocks or King of the Super-Zooms!

James - spot on re the 24-120 lens. I am loving mine. I also just got the 100-400 and it is tack sharp!!! Paired with my 14-30, a 20mm 1.8S for Astro and the 50mm 1.8S just because it’s so sweet and bye bye DSLR. Selling my D850. The Z system is so dang good. Thanks for the review…

Thanks for a great overview, James. Always enjoy your style and material covered. Just picked up the Z9 and the 24-120 f4. Also own the 14-30 and considering the 100-400 in the near future to complete the trio for landscape, sports and BIF photography. However I own the 70-200 f2.8s and the 2x TC. Wonder if I should sell that combo to get the 100-400. Your thoughts will be appreciated.

Great summary James. I've watched this a few times now. I just cant convince myself about 24-70 given I have a 50mm but 24-120 is appealing. If it means less lens changing that means lens sensor cleaning, and that has to be a good thing. Thanks for this input

Good review thanks. I have the 24-70 and 24-200 as it came out some time ago and I wanted the extra reach, which I do use. Optically it's good but not up to the 24-120 standard. I am considering but would then have to get another lens!

I love that you mentioned this lens pairing with the 14-30. I currently own the 14-30 and want to add this lens to my kit and have those 2 for travel. Seems like suchhhh a solid combo. Probably throw in the 35 1.8 just as a street/night lens but other than that this lens seems to be exactly what I would want for travel!

Good review. I've had the 24-120 for a month now and I think I'm liking it better than my 24-70 F mount. I've set the L-Fn button to subject tracking. I have disabled all function of the third ring because I think it is very easy to accidentally move it and have problems. Here, in Spain, there are also Nikon supply problems, as in the rest of the world. I was lucky. Thanks for the video!

Good objective review - thanks! I have the 24-70 currently and love it, but looking to get the 24-120 - I won't part with the 24-70 - that will be for a 2nd body perhaps down the road, or when I need a compact walk around lens with the Z6ii. You're right the 100-400 Z makes a great companion for the 24-120 (especially since I do bird photography), but the cost has been holding me back a little.

Nice review, James. I use the third control ring for exposure compensation. Not having to operate both a control wheel and a button simultaneously to view the histogram is pure pleasure! While the 24-120 F4 looks impressive for lightweight landscape through the many reviews I have seen, I have opted for the Z 2.8 Trilogy (14-24, 24-70, and 70-200), which are a bit heavier, bulkier, and more expensive yes, but hard to match the total optics, speed and versatility for both landscape and portrait. And with the Z7, still a relatively lightweight and compact kit for a total landscape range. All of Nikon's Z lens offerings are now arguably, becoming the gold standard in the industry.

Yes, all of the Nikon S lenses are amazing. Although the 2.8 24-70mm is sharper, unless your comparing zoomed right in on your monitor at home there is no visible difference in sharpness compared to the f4 versions. I shot identical landscape scenes with the 24-70mm f4 and 2.8 at f11 on the Z7, edited them the same, printed them at 30×45 inches then wall mounted them side by side. The corner and centre sharpness is indistinguishable. When your comparing sharpness and zoomed in more than 50% then your going beyond what everyone else will be observing the photo. My 24-70mm f2.8 s is sharper than my f4 s when I'm zoomed into the corner at 200% but at that point I'm not looking at a photo anymore, I'm looking at pixels. My f4 is lighter and way cheaper, much better for landscapes, my 2.8 is only better for 1 stop of light.

As a lucky owner of this lens since a couple of weeks myself I can only confirm your findings. As you I was a bit afraid of coming short in optical quality against the standard 24-70mm. But luckily proven to be wrong. This lens is exactly what you want when you do a lot of landscape shootings. BTW - I have put the DoF preview on the Fn button. Might change it to zoom for focus checking. But I am so used to have it where I have it now on my Z7II.

Great video. Very helpful content. I have the 14-30, 24-70 and have the Sigma Sport 70-200 f2.8, but it’s way too heavy, so I’m thinking about this lens and just cropping. The Z 70-200 is out of my budget - I don’t use the 70-200 on a regular basis. Any thoughts

Thanks for the video James! I share your opinion almost completely. I would also have liked an image stabilizer in the lens. However, I don't see it as a mistake that it doesn't exist. I haven't used the control ring yet, but I immediately assigned highlight-weighted exposure metering to the function button because I really like using it. My Z 35 1.8 S has almost lost its job because of the 24 -120, I only use the Viltrox Z 85 1.8 quite often. And still with the old F-Mount the Tokina Opera 50 1.4, I'll never give that back. Greetings from Germany, I will subscribe to your channel, then maybe my English will improve.😅

I like you pointed out that relative to the 24-200, the fact that this has the coatings required for high dynamic range into the sun… is the reason why you avoided that non-s lens, but I kind of don’t like the coatings that much for portrait photography and also portrait especially as you don’t want “corner sharpness” so I’m going to get both 24-70 f4 second hand and the 24-200. I’ve already got (another dirt cheap) vintage af-s f4 300mm prime that is easily croppable to 500mm, so I think I’m very happy. I just wish the vintage 300mm was a bit more weather resistant though… the af-s motor sort of shorts out with a mild bit of condensation 😂

I shoot at 2.8 a lot so I wouldn’t buy this lens, but with my 24-70/2.8 I use the lens button to suppress the flash. It is great for shooting portraits or weddings. You don’t have to keep turning on and off the mounted flash. I take a couple of shots with the flash, then press the lens button and take a couple without the flash. No you don’t need VR at this focal length. The 100-400 is a great lens as well. Super short focus distance. I use it with both TCs. Anything beyond that I use the Z 800mm prime which is amazing. I have handheld shots of the moon at 1,600mm that are absolutely sharp. Any of the 2.8 zooms are great tools to have in your bag.

I agree - the Z 24-120mm F4 S has become my favorite landscape lens, if necessary in combination with the Z 14-30 F4 S. I am not so convinced however that the complement to the longer telephoto range should be covered by the Z 100-400 4.5-5.6 S: Very expensive, quite heavy - desregarding the fact that it is not yet available here in Switzerland for the moment. Therefore I gave a try to the AF-P 70-300mm F4.5-5.6E ED VR , which I bought for 540 CHF - which is six times cheaper than the Z 100-400 S! And believe me: It's image quality is not six times inferior ... in most situations you will not notice a difference at all! But what you will notice is it's lighter weight on hiking tours in the Alps!

Thanks for this review, agree 100%. I have the 14-30 and the 100-400, so essentially I have a 14-400 spread with almost all of it being at f4* with a skosh more at 5.6 on the long end. A TC takes it to 540 at f8. Amazing given they are all S lenses. As far as function ring, I set that for ISO as it is the only setting that you have to push two buttons to change if you don't have it in Auto. I can quickly roll it to an appropriate ISO if needed and not take my eye off the subject. I have the 24-200 which I've loved and not sure if I'll keep or sell to MPB. Tough choice.

@gerryphilpott9766
@gerryphilpott9766 2 жыл бұрын
@@indrajitadvani3742 Tough one. A TC on the 200 is 280 so not that much more. I love the 1.4x as unnoticeable from the lens. I understand the 2x gets a bit soft. It all depends on if you will be doing portraits or not and need the f2.8. If not, I went with the 100-400 because same price, same size/weight, and gives me double the distance. Convincing, use case based review, James. Photos, a plus - cat cameo, as well😁. Good comment about focal length range/optical quality compromise. What metrics/specs do you use for assessing how well a lens is matched against a sensor’s resolution (aside from subjective image comparisons)? At one time sensors were compared to analog film for resolution - not very often today, though. Have seen companies tout pre-release lenses that will have “higher resolutions” to take advantage of higher pixel count cams yet to come. No mention of metrics, though. Programmable custom button on lens - how about image magnification, or eye AF? No lens is worth a kidney😁. Cheers!

Thanks Paul. I don’t use any particular metrics or fancy measurement charts. I just try to visually judge the performance as best I can across images in various circumstances and settings. Watching your progression from DSLR to mirrorless was one of the reasons I finally ditched DSLR and moved across beginning late last November and completing the change late January. I thought I would definitely miss my D850 and 70-200 f2.8 (my 24-70 f2.8 was a little soft - I never liked the picture quality of the D500 spoilt by the D850). For those still thinking about it all I can say is that the picture quality in detail, texture, colour and sharpness for Z6 and Z7 using the 14-30, 24-120, 100-400 and the z mount 105 f2.8 is bonkers brilliant - hands down better than the D850. Obviously these are my own thoughts. Cheers James. (The quality of the 100-400 is awesome - once you’ve found a buyer for your kidney you will not be disappointed). Finally, the weight difference in my bag is way better than bonkers! The four lenses and Z7 in my bag on my back feels so light. Win win.

I had the 24-200 for a few months. It was actually a really good everyday lens. I would say it was the best superzoom I’ve ever used. But sold it because it was too big, it didn’t have the coatings I wanted, and the build quality was lower than my Z primes. I might replace it with this lens, but I still prefer ultra wide primes and super telephoto lenses: I only use normal focal lengths (35mm to 85mm) for city and portraits.

Great Video. I like that you’ll get the Z100-400 after you sold one of your kidneys! 🤣 I have the Z24-70/2.8S for low light (indoor) and I love it. (I got it last year for 1750€ brand new and I couldn’t resist). For traveling I got the Z24-200/4-6.3 and I was surprised how good it is. But since end of last year the Z24-120/4S is my “every day lens”. I do 100% agree with you: It’s an awesome lens. I would love to have the Z14-30/4S BUT I don’t like the lock function. That’s the reason why I never bought the kit lens. Not sure what comes next, but because I’m going to move to Kenya 🇰🇪 next year (Nyeri, in the Highlands next to Aberdare National Park), I’m thinking of buying the Z100-400… after I’ve sold one of my kidneys). 🤣

James Really useful video and has probably persuaded me to buy the lens. However can I be cheeky and ask how you set up up Z7ii to take exposure brackets please? What I want to be able to do is (in manual), back button focus then hit the shutter and 2seconds later the camera takes the 3 shots in the bracket. Can I get it to do this (which is really simple on the D850) - can I buggery and it is driving me MAD!!! Any suggestions really gratefully appreciated. Frustrated of Whitchurch

Thanks Clive. I don’t have my camera setup to take the brackets all in one sequence. I engage the shutter for each image in the bracket. I have setup one of the custom buttons on the front of my camera to give quick access to bracket settings 👍

Geronimo!!!! FINALLY sorted and now all dialled in to U1. I now have a 2s shutter delay, can set up my aperture and shutter speed, use back button focus to focus and when I hit the shutter it takes the 3 shots in the bracket!!!!!

Nice video James. I just got a Z9....and this lens, though I've yet to give it a run. I have a 14-24mm F-Mount and considering selling that and either buying Z14-24 or maybe even Laowa 15mm Z. Any thoughts?

Thanks although I didn’t like the “likely loss of quality” attributed to the z 24-200mm. I find the quality and VR great and only the f6.3 at longer focal lengths, is a pain. If you want to keep both your kidneys, the two Sigma 150-600mm lenses work well with the FTZ. The C version is quite light but only has a token focus ring and the S version is brilliant but heavy.

I think if nikon made a 24-135 f3.4 in a similar size and price to the canon 28-70 f2 it would be the ultimate lens, half a stop over F2.8 wont bother most people and the versatility would be second to none.

What telezoom would you recommend to combine this with? I'm on F-mount with a D750 and I have the F-mount 24-120, together with the 18-35, 70-200/4 and the new 70-300 (I am trying to decide which one of those to keep). My main purpose is travel, and I'm trying to save weight (one reason I got the 70-300). It seems to me like the Z mount lineup still lacks a good quality, but not overly big or expensive, telezoom option. There is the Tamron 70-300 but from reviews I think it's not as good as the F-mount 70-300 I already own. Also, for travel, I am wondering if the exposed sensor of a Z-mount body isn't far more likely to get dust on it than the sensor in a DSLR, that is behind a shutter and a mirror assembly. Obviously the Z9 is an exception, but that camera is not for me.

Lol, I posted this question while pausing the video just before you mentioned the 100-400. But yeah, that lens is quite large and heavy, not to mention expensive, in my book.

Hi Peter, I’ve never used the 70-300 so can’t really say much in that. I have owned the 70-200 f4 though and that’s a very good lens! For landscape shooting it’s extremely good! I guess you’ll just have to figure out which of your two telephoto lenses you prefer. Good luck

If you think you need a 300mm. I would carry a 300/4.0 instead of a zoom with a f/5.6 at 300mm. I rather have that extra stop with a faster shutter speed or lower IS.o value. Plus the image quality would be better with the prime lens.

Hi James, thanks for your fantastic review. Now I am much more excited about the idea of acquiring the 24-120 but my doubt is what degree of usability I can give it with the beautiful Z FC (truly a precious camera), but it lacks in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and the 24-120 lens does not have VR. Do you think it would be better to opt for another lens or is this 24-120 still recommended?

I have the z 24 200 with VR. Works great. I have a Nikon 6 ii and the Nikon z 50 which does not have body stabilization. So it works great with both. The Z FC looks like a fun camera!!!

As an owner of this lens, I just found out that Nikon disabled the fully mechanical shutter whenever this lens is attached to your camera. Apparently this was done as a poor man's version of vibration reduction / image stabilization because the lens is very susceptible to shutter vibration especially at longer focal lengths. This might be okay, but what just doesn't sit right with me is how Nikon never openly mentions this. Customers are forced to find out after buying the lens.

I know I'm late to the party here, but currently I have playback as my lens function; I'm a viewfinder shooter and so I don't have to move back from the camera to review what I just show. My custom ring is the aperture adjustment at the moment.
