Nikon 28mm f/1.8G Review - Is it For Everyone?

In this video I discuss and review the fantastic Nikon 28mm f/1.8G and why it's a fantastic lens, who its for and what I didn't like about it. I can't stress enough, this lens is by far one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used, the color rendition and low amounts of lens distortion or chromatic aberration makes it a great addition to the camera bag. But is it for everyone?

Great video Nicholas, seeing this video in 2023 but i just get this lens at bargain price to use adapter on my z6, and love your review. I will use it for video too, so very happy that you mention it. Great job!

Oh man this is an old video! Haha. How you liking 28 on the z6? I have a Z6II. Are you using the FTZ adapter?

That was a good lens. I've used it for a little while, the size was quite nice. The closest thing available for the Z mount is the 40 f/2 which reminded me a lot of that lens in terms of image quality. Thanks for the sub, its an old video tho. I don't do much photography stuff these days.

I have no idea what happened to the quality of the video. I exported at a very high bitrate. But the photos I added in the video look horrible. I must have screwed something up! Sorry about that. Check out some of the photos I've taken with this lens on my Flickr page. bit.ly/28mmreviewsamples

It doesn’t look that sharp on my camera although I’ve been through different af tune values...

It's a hit and miss sometimes when it comes lenses. They call it the lens lottery. The copy I had was extremely sharp, I miss it. But I no longer shoot Nikon.

If you want a more compact 28mm, you can always get the D series. 😁.

That's true. But not my favorite 28mm, the D version is quite soft (for today's high megapixels sensors) and only max aperture of f/2.8 and lacks the modern coatings. But yes, you are right. It's quite compact little lens and pretty cheap too. It's an option.

@@nerwin I have the Voigtlander 28mm f/2.8 Color Skopar. It's a manual lens, but it's really small and great performer.

Well I certainly wouldn't call it a complete pro grade lens. Pro grade optics? Yep. Pro grade build? Nope. Haha. Thanks for the comment!

Nicholas Erwin Ha ha agree, another plastic fantastic by Nikon Mind you some of their best lenses are plastic these days , I was shooting with a 50 mm f1.4?the other day , I could feel the focusing motor working under the plastic skin....crazy man And the 24-70vr again super plastic and highly prized.

I ended up selling the 28 1.8G and used the money toward the 70-200 f/4 VR. Best decision I ever made. That lens is sweet. I gotta make a video about it.
