As a longtime photographer but relatively new to shooting video, this was hands-down the most informative overview I found on KZfaq for shooting with my D500. He answered every one of my questions succinctly-without droning on and wasting time-and showed where and how to access the relevant settings.

I agree - a still photographer… waited forever for my D500 (had the D200 then quickly the D300 - over 150k without issue on that shutter) - got it about the day it came out. Finally wanted to try more video- this is just a great intro. Thanks!

Thanks for this informative video. I’m a bit frustrated with the D500 for video and I’d think a mirror less camera would be better for using an evf and focusing. I seem to find myself switching to still mode to see TTL to compose and focus and then back to video to record. This is particularly the case on bright days when you just can’t see the lcd. Maybe a viewfinder adapter would help a lot on bright days. However I have learnt quite a bit just by watching this video.

Great video, very helpful for new videographers. I expect to be taking videos of moving objects/animals. I've played with the Af-F when recording video and re-focus as needed in the LiveView screen, but then it is annoying to hear the lens searching a little. I guess that can be overcome if music replaced the recorded soundtrack for playback. :) Do you recommend manual focus for subjects such as wildlife? Or is there something else I could try?
@MaartenHeilbron

Yes, external/independent audio recording. If you are serious about audio (as you seem to be) the internal mics, as you are observing, do not provide good results.

Great video. Very concise. Will review more times. My issue: I am interested in 2 kinds of videography: (1) wildlife and birds; and (2) underwater using a Nauticam housing with either macro or wide lenses. The concepts of exposure and focus are pretty tricky for underwater. Wildlife a bit more straightforward but we shall see. Any advice or videos addressing these? Grazie; Bedankt, Merci, Thanks! ....
@MaartenHeilbron

Thanks for the kind words. For birds/wildlife, you'll probably want a fast (preferably non-ramped) long lens and a tripod. In camera stabilization will help keep ISO down, but VR is also helpful. Sorry, I have no underwater expertise.

Thanks, Maarten - that was quite helpful info! I'm trying to shoot video of sermons from the back of the church and using the 180mm f2.8 Nikkor lens on my D500. I'm finding that the video is quite blown out at the center of the video when attempting to get an overall brighter balance of the image so as to overcome what I think is the vignette that the lens has. I've tried all different aperture and ISO settings but I just can't seem to get the balanced look that cheapie video camcorder can get. I'd really like to use a D7100 that I have for this purpose but I tried it this afternoon and didn't seem to have any luck. Any thoughts on this?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
The lens' vignette is unlikely to be that dramatic. I haven't seen the scene, but I would expose properly for the subject(s) and let the rest be dark. More lighting is a better solution for the dark areas.

Great video, thank you. Any idea why the back screen lightens up temporarily when I press a new focus point, but then quickly goes back to a darker image?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. I think what you're experienccing is a function of the focus system - it opens the aperture fully to check focus. However, if it's more than just a fraction of a second, then it's part of power management, and reviewing those settings may change this.

Hi Maarten. Thank you for this very helpful tutorial. I have set my D500 as described. However, I have an issue. I am recording myself talking and notice that if I move my head, even slightly, side-to-side, the camera very slight changes what's in view in the background. This makes items in the background, at the side of the frame, come in an out of shot as I move. It's very distracting. I thought it might be because I am using OBS to record, but I notice it also happens in qDslrDashboard as well. I am wondering if I have something set incorrectly? Any help much appreciated. Thanks, Mark.
@MaartenHeilbron

Very nice video!!! I've had my D500 for almost 2 years and have shied away from using its video because I could never get it to stay focused on my moving subjects. I'm an action photographer (professional sports and wildlife) using a Tamron 150-600 mm G2. How do I keep, for example, an eagle flying toward me in focus? Holding down the back focus button doesn't seem to work (unless I'm just doing it wrong). I haven't checked the rest of your videos yet, but hopefully you'll have one for videoing moving subjects. Thanks again for your great video!
@MaartenHeilbron

Hi Maarten - Thanks for this helpful video! Do you have any tips on getting quality audio with a RodeLink wireless mic? What sensitivity setting do you use? I see you have the headphones set at 22. I tried some tests but the sound is just awful. I used sensitivity of 10 and it picked up all the ambient noise in the room (the fridge hum, even though I was 30 feet away). I then tried 6, and it was a bit better, but my voice sounded very quiet now - maybe it can be fixed in post? Is it possible to get decent audio quality with the D500?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 2 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to hear you found it helpful. I no longer have a D500 to check, The headphone setting is for playback (it doesn't affect the recording). I don't remember what the mic sensitivity setting was. As I said, you should see some yellow, but no red. Yes, you can get decent audio from the D500. Yes, you would fix the sound levels in editing - and you may find it sounds quite different on the computer than played back on the camera. As for picking up ambient sounds, I turn off just about everything in the house when I record (except the fridge - mainly because I sometime forget to turn it back on. However, it's also important to keep the mic close (within 10cm or so) of your mouth. In the meantime, I'm no longer using the Rode either, I'm now recording with the Zoom F2, which is a combination lapel mic and recorder. I upgraded mostly because there were sometimes audio dropouts that I didn't notice until editing. Yes, that means you have to synchronize in post, which (if it seems complicated now) is quite easy after you've done it once or twice. Hope this helps.
@AuntieCL

Thanks for the kind words. It sounds as if that combination might be a little large and heavy for the Zhiyun Crane (or did I get that wrong?). Those are general settings which should work for both. I would definitely get an ND filter for outside. I think autofocus would be best, but I would probably do a little experimenting with settings to determine the best configuration before the shoot gets serious. Make sure you have enough batteries for a couple of hours - that's definitely more than one.

Thank you so much for your reply! To answer your question, I have the Zhiyun Crane V2 which supports 4 lbs, and with my lens, battery and card I'm coming in at just under 3lbs. I think I'll turn the face detection off so it doesn't jump too much and use the tap focus when needed. Again, I love your videos and am a big fan! @MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the smiles - you made my afternoon. Glad to hear that it works with the Crane. Yes, touch focus (although you probably don't want to do it while recording, or during an important scene) is a great solution to remind the D500 what you think is important. But in general, it will just focus on what's closest - and faces, if face detection is on.

Thanks for the kind words. Only mirrorless cameras have viewfinders that work in video mode. On a DSLR the viewfinder can't display an image in any video mode, as the mirror must flip up, blocking the path of the image to the optical viewfinder.

While shooting video, if I pan across a scene, will the D500 refocus itself as the distance to the subject changes (as many dedicated video cameras do), or must I manually refocus? It seems cumbersome to maintain focus by continually pressing a button or turning the focus ring while recording.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
If you must refocus, and if you can't maintain focus with a manual focus setting, use the touch screen to select the focus point. Note that in liveview, a different inferior focus system is used.

Nice and comprehensive, as usual. I shoot some amateur videos (at school) and use an external microphone (Rode videoMicro) and I would be interested in a "lavalier" microphone for some projects. I saw you're using the Rode Link. It looks very good but might be overkill for me (not to mention the price). Can you recommend some good rate price/quality alternative (I was thinking around 100€/$). Thanks for your content anyway, I enjoy it !
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words, thanks! There is a price point below which a wireless microphone is just an unreliable toy. In my humble opinion, the Rodelink is the least expensive reliable wireless mic you can buy. If your budget does not allow, there are many wired lav mics, like the Polsen one listed on my Amazon recommended list. www.amazon.com/shop/maartenheilbron (You pay the same price, I get a small commission).
@julienbeltran3714
@julienbeltran3714 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your answer. I understand your statement and agree that it's pointless to get an unreliable gear. Considering the price of the Polsen, I might give it a try and see later if I need to upgrade to the wireless Rode Link. But am afraid I will not use your link since I currently live in Slovakia (Central Europe), so amazon.com would cost me more for delivery than for the goods ! haha But I might move to Vancouver (BC) next summer, so maybe in a near future :) Looking forward for your next content (I love your extensive reviews).
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
I provide the link only for reference, purchase at the dealer of your choice. Maybe in Slovakia you will find that there are similar alternate products. In general, lapel mics with mini plugs will be relatively inexpensive. Brands like auto technica and others also make them. There are also lapel mics that you can connect to your phone to make the recording and synchronize it when you edit.

I have D500 but cant use it in Jungle when the animals are moving constantly. Any specific setting to lock Focus on Animals and it will keep focusing constantly like Continuous Focus? Thanks a lot for brilliant and very helpful video
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 11 ай бұрын
That will always be a challenge for a novice photographer. My recommendation is to go out and practice on any kind of moving subject - maybe at the zoo? Newer mirrorless cameras than can detect animal faces and have faster focus systems will be better than a DSLR.

I need to shoot a wedding highlight video for a friend, previously I have only used the D500 for photos. I am unclear as to the D500 ability to shoot video and auto focus? Will it autofocus or do you have to use the touch screen to select the focus area? I tried playing around with it and did not see to be able to get it to auto focus.

You're correct, really best to use the touch focus.

Interesting and informative video. Very useful information. Just one small criticism, in some parts of the video (but not all) there are hiss and/or werring noises and in other parts of the video , it sounds as if your voice was hitting the red areas for volume and is becoming distorted. Beyond this, great video.

You should use manual focus, as I assume that the distance from the camera to the speaker is not changing. You will be disappointed if you use AF-C.

Lots of good information here. When I shoot a movie and then replay it within the camera, the output volume is extremely low, even when using headphones. I connected an external powered speaker using the headphone jack and the output volume is still extremely low. Any way to increase the output volume?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 ай бұрын
If you've turned up the volume on the camera's playback screen then it likely was recorded low. Check your record settings for your next video recording. If you do export it to your computer for editing, one of the advantages of digital audio recordings is that the volume can be increased a lot before any kind of noise starts to emerge.

@@brian_db Try a one second interval and 600 images. At 30 fps that will give you twenty second. Your shutter speed should be 1/60 with the appropriate aperture and ISO to properly expose. Using 1/60 will provide the right amount of motion blur.
