The age old question every time Nikon and Canon put out a similar camera is which one should you buy. This time around we have the Nikon D600 and the Canon 6D.
I have done a full review of both of these cameras and during the video you can click the top left or top right to go see that review. Some people like to see two cameras shot in the exact situations and than review the sample images. To me thats just not real, its not shooting in a real world environment which would be almost impossible to replicate the settings and situations.
In this video I give you my thoughts on the pros and cons of each camera. In the end I feel that either camera would do a fantastic job. For me I would go with the Nikon but that wont be a surprise to anyone as I already have a ton of Nikon gear. But there are strong reasons for someone going full frame to consider the Canon 6D as well.

I bought the 6D in December. It's been fantastic! The IQ is the best feature. The AF isn't as bad as they look on paper. Very low light is where the outer points seriously struggle. The center point makes up for it. It's amazing, but you may have to focus/recompose like the 5D2. I'll never go to a crop sensor again. You must buy the kit. You'll get the 24-105 for almost half price, and can sell it for a nice profit if you don't want it. 5D3 is better, 6D is affordable.

Jared, since you're in the field longer than me which one should I choose? Bigger buffer but slower speed transferring to SD (15 RAW shots, 22 seconds to clear) in the 60D or smallest buffer but faster speed (6 shots, 4 seconds) in the 650D? I'm choosing Canon since I already have a couple of Canon Lenses. Thank you

Jared, I would like to know more about the image quality between these cameras. I watched the reviews and both are very very good. But it would be cool if you, as a professional, give your thoughts. Dinamic range, sharpness, processing, colors etc. What do you think. This review seems like de canon is better at everthing. The only advantage of the Nikon would be the auto focus. But if you buy it wondering about upgrade in future, it would not be good to buy a camera that have ONLY a better auto focus.

I got a 6D, and thanks to Jared I understand a lots of things I used to shot with a 5 AF point camera and this one cross type does not bothers me at all. the 6D works great in low light superb image quality fast focusing with the right lens on. I use a 50mm 1.4 on and 85mm 1.8, 17-40 F4L wide angle and 70-200 F4. One last thing is not the gear that makes a great photo a the photographer.

When talking about the video aspect and going with the 6D that makes sense in the long term potentially but apart from the aperture changing function in live view the extra headphone socket on the D600 shouldn't be overlooked

Thanks for the comments Jared. I ended up with the D600. So far Im really happy with it. The only real area where the 6D is better than then D600 is the Live View. Nikon's LV is poor (even on the D800) compared to any of the Canons.

Subjects are less annoyed by an autofocus-assist lamp than a whole bunch of powerful flashes at once. Plus, the pre-flashes cause blinking in portraits more than a steady light.

I have two dedicated flashes, one D90 and one D3100 and yes, the popup flash is rarely used but still is good to have.. one of the reasons is weight (sometimes you just cannot carry them..) and other is.. If you have dead batteries, or even if you made a mistake (forgot the dedicated flash or etc) some light is better than none.. and its super easy to make a difuser.. Even a home made / on the spot made.. better than nothing..

That was the thing I thought about when he mentioned that it has a pop up, and the Canon didn't. Sure you may never use the flash to contribute directly to the photo....but having an essentially "free" ttl flash commander is a pretty large value. Kei

Could you review Sony RX100? I know that it's not DSLR but I heard that it packs DSLR quality (about 80%-90%) & it has fully manual controls + it shoots RAW.

I agree I use the D7000 popup at the moment to control trusty old sb600s and it works so well it's amazing :') Definitely something I would consider when upgrading.

Nice comparison review, I don't think either camera is enough to make someone jump ship from one brand to the other, but basically Nikon shooters will do well with the D600 and Canon shooters will do well with the 6D, especially for the price compared to the D800 and 5D III

The Nikons Pop Up flash is a free ittl master for a whole group of speedlights, essentially saving you roughly 300 bucks. Why this isnt mentioned in any of the comparisons is beyond me.

I own the Mark lll also, but I used to shoot Nikon, but as far as these two cameras go, the 6D image quality and ISO performance is top notch, rite up there with the 1DX, and the auto focus works better than the mark ll, and is fine for anything other than tracking, and the wi fi is very under rated, you can wirelessly send pics to your computer and see your images full screen while doing a photo shoot, so the D600 has a pop up flash, I love pop up flash hmmm, I wish my 5D3 had a pop up flash

I'd really like to give the wi-fi Camranger a try on my d600. Supposedly it gives very good control with tap to focus and fine focus adjustments on an iPad. Just wish there were some objective reviews out there. Price seems a little high at $299.

I am seriously considering switching to Nikon because of the 6D's 1-crosstype autofocus system. I feel like the only upgrade from my 5 year old 50D is a 5D3, but I don't want to spend that much money and the D600 seems like a viable option.

Jared, you do a lot of shooting in low light situations...concerts and behind-the-scenes portraiture with music artists. I'd be very interested to know, how frequently you shoot with high ISO's and what is your typical high ISO sweet spot? I'm asking because many high end DSLR's feature native and expanded high ISO's from 10K up to 200K and higher. Are these just stupid-high ISO's that are rarely useful, or are there situations where the ability to shoot at an ISO of 10k or higher is actually of use?

ISO 10,000 is just awesome on the 6D: (not a concert or anything) www.flickr.com/photos/mikeymack/14676318641/ I shoot 8,000-25,600 for night scenes with no problems, and 3200-8000 ISO for general walkabout handheld shots is very good.

+NCHANT Hi man, i am also into astrophotography, I am also using a 6D and a Rokinon 14mm f2.8, I rarely go above 3000iso, do you have any tips about noise reduction when shooting at around 10.000 iso ? Thank you :D

+Oskar Thor you should be sweet to shoot at 6,400 ISO? One thing I have found is due to the vignetting on the 14mm ƒ2.8 is that you will get more noise, vs say the 24mm ƒ1.4 on the same settings. I shoot my 14mm at ƒ4, 6,400-10,000 ISO and 30 seconds. I use ƒ4 to help reduce the vignetting (better exposure = less noise) and also sharper stars.

Did you not read the comment? He said it could be used as a master for a whole group of speedlights. He's talking about using the flash to control other flashes. Hardly useless. Also, I've found situations where the pop-up worked very well for fill light and has worked very well for macro shots. Having this act as a controller for external flashes and always having flash always available is a big benefit for me.

I'd go with photoshop if you had to pick between them. You can do a lot more with it and it still has RAW editing built in. Lightroom is pretty much purely a RAW editor with a few more features than the photoshop editor, but the photoshop one is still very decent plus you get all the rest of the features photoshop offers which is massive.

I just bough D600 with 24-70 mm. f2.8 lens. Already taking 1,000 pictures, no oil or dust. The pictures are very good. I never regret spending money to upgrade from D90. I like D600 because of built-in flash, dedicated BKT button and the 2 slots for card. I don't need GPS, Wi-Fi or other features 6D has but D600 does not. From now on, if the pictures don't come out right, I can not blame my camera. If they come out right, some credit goes to the camera.

He simply did what a lot of people do, who are having difficulty making their mind up when it comes to, two similar items, like the cameras. Most of us run this this dialogue through our mind as we ponder, dream, think about, wonder, compare, needs, wants, what if's Etc. Only Jared verbalized his thoughts for you. he could have condensed the video for you and simply said: "There both good"

At least in Germany the D600 street price dropped about 350,- Euro below the 6D's one. If you don't do a lot of video that makes the decision way easier. Thx 4 your videos, I enjoy seeing them.

Who said changing aperture in live view is coming in a firmware update? My understanding is that it is a mechanical limitation as Nikon use a single motor in the consumer cameras to keep cost down which means the aperture cannot operate independently when in live view so no firmware will ever "fix" it. Nikon very rarely issue firmware upgrades to existing cameras in any case. Why did they not do it for the D7000?

I'm a canon shooter, and as much as I'd like to get a full frame, I'm going to pass this round. The 180th sync speed is a deal breaker for me, I could deal with the focus point but not that slow of a sync speed for my lights.

My personal opinion is that Canon intentionally crippled the 6D a little to keep it separate from the 5D Mark III. If they gave it a standard sync speed, better AF, more external function and so on, I think it would hurt sales for the 5D. I don't think it would totally eat sales up, but it would hurt it.

One thing I wonder Jared, why are you saying Canon is better for portraits? I mean everyone knows Sony sensors are better and Nikon skin tones are on another level so even if I heard the review I still don't understand what makes the 6D better for portraits in your opinion, when Nikon can focus better and get better skin tones and sharpness.

***** well, if you asked the other side they would probably tell you the same...I mean Jared is a Nikon shooter yet he's saying Canon is better for portraits, I thought the lenses were waht's making portraits worse/better with all the post processing regulations you can do from the original camera...plus, with a better dynamic range on sensor there's no way Canon could be better for portraits, also considering that as I said most of the tones the 6D outputs are too red right?

+AndreCorner It's preference, Canon has warmer skin tones and Nikon are on the cooler side which are very apparent in JPEGs but less noticeable in RAWs. I went with the 6D because I wanted the canon 50mm 1.2 with autofocus, if nikon's f1.2 had autofocus I would've went with them to be honest.

Itaku I heard a lot about that lens but there's tons of people saying it's getting old and the Sigma 50mm 1.4 is better than that...and that's one of the main reasons I want the D750. You miss that 0.2 but unless you totally have to shoot at 1.2 the 1.4 of the Sigma is way sharper than the Canon at 1.2 and 1.4 too but again, it's all about personal tastes :) I also like some Canon lenses(135mm for example, I love portraits and that's a classic Nikon doesn't have) but I asked myself if I'd rather have a worse body and some cool lens options I couldn't purchase right after anyway or a great body and hope the lenses would come(for example the Sigma is doing a 85 ART and its said to be working on a 135 too in which I believe!).

AndreCorner There are definitely plenty other 50mm lens sharper than the canon, even the rokinon 50mm 1.4 is sharper wide open lol. I got the canon 1.2 to shoot wide open because I don't mind the drawbacks like sharpness and fringing, it's all about the bokeh, no one should be buying the canon 1.2 to shoot at anything but 1.2 or they'd be wasting money.

Itaku Agreed on that but if you'd really want a good bokeh then the 85mm 1.4 would be a better option imho, since it's not THAT longer(compared to the 135 or 70-200 at least) and the bokeh smokes away all the 50's...I mean there's a lot of comparisons between the Canon at 1.2 and the Sigma at 1.4 and you can hardly tell the bokeh difference in some pictures.

Just got a D600 a love it, superb BUT if you want video go for canon as I think they have the video mastered. I personally would be happy for Nikon to remove video altogether and add more still photo features

Go for D600 unless you stuck with Canon gears. However, if Pentax come out a full frame DSLR, I won't think either, imo.

I'm pissed with canon. As a 60d user, I was looking to upgrade to the 6d, but there are so downgraded things that I dont know if the FF sensor will make up all those problems. 1/4000 max shutter... only 1 CT AF vs 9 in the 60d. 4.5pfs. I know the FF and the awesome low light capabilities should make it more attractive to me but at this point Im not interested. If the 70d has better low light capabilities like the 6d I would jump on that one!

I wish Canon would understand that a pop up flash is a great thing to have, just because it is considered a pro camera, doesn't mean that you don't ever use it outside of the studio, and you don't always want to carry some monster flash with you to put on your already big and heavy camera, I don't understand why Canon doesn't atleast make a very small popup flash with an led auto focus assist beam on it, like the size of the little OMD flash, anyway I think the 6D image quality and ISO are great

the pop up flash is only good for shooting in daylight to throw a touch more light into the shadows of the face at close range... in my opinion. Any other use of a pop-up flash is going to look like you used a on-board cheap flash.

I think you forgot smth very important to mention which especially might count when it comes to going a more professional path. The Nikon d600 has dual SD cards slots whereas the Canon does have only a single one!

For pete's sake go for the 6d or wait a year for new batch d600's... If you like to shoot above f8 then bloody hell you're gonna have some bothersome oil and dust issue with the d600, My advice as a d600 owner, go buy a d800 or a 6d... another option would to wait a year or so for new batch of d600's.
