Same here. The output is top notch still today and there are a lot of good opportunities around, new and used lenses are quite more convenient. I have several AF-D objectives and intend to use them for a long time. Their rendition is very nice.

@@frederikboving - you are exactly correct on this issue! The D750 camera does it's job valiantly, so if/when an image isn't dead on, more often than not, it's the photographers fault. I've had mine for 2 years now, and I'm just as happy with it now, as when I bought it new. I have a 28-300mm that rarely comes off these days, as it's just SO versatile, yet giving wonderful images. I have many FX lenses now, albeit few primes, other than my 50mm F/1.4 & a Tamron 90 Macro, but would like to get the 105mm F/1.4 as it's one of Nikon's lenses for near perfect clarity. Again, it depends on the photographer, but these days I'm usually carrying my tripod and gimbal head to get the best of sharp shots. Great review!

Thanks, yes, the D750 is certainly not the latest-and-greatest piece of technology, but I still think it performs very well, especially taking price into consideration. Yesterday I shot some pictures at night, and the low light performance of the D750 (AF especially) is simply stunning. That camera sees in the dark!

Hi Jas, since I made the video on the D750, I have actually purchased a Sony A7rii which now within the reach of my budget (1380 EUR body only). So I can speak to the D750 versus the Sony A7Rii with first level experience (maybe I should make a blog post about the difference between the two...). You should know that I most of the time use these cameras for stills, landscape and other subjects that basically don't move. So AF systems and FPS is not key to me. I happily buy vintage lenses and spend minutes fine tuning the focus manually... First of all, I was surprised to find how little difference there is between a 40+ mp and a 24+mp frame. I thought the level of detail would be mind-blowing on the A7rii. It is not. It is better. But just better. In terms of shooting experience the Sony is horrible. You get used to it, but it is horrible. The best thing is that it is consistent horrible across their product range (the RX100 is another of my cameras, and the menus are the same). You can tell that Nikon has been in this game for a long time and they have listened to feedback from photographers for many years and improved and improved. Sony is - I think - an engineer driven company where technical specs and superiority is key. Not shooting experience. A mirrorless has some big advantages, especially when shooting with vintage lenses: Focus peak and focus magnification. Great help. Really useful. Secondly, you can see the level indicator + histogram also in the viewfinder. I find that extremely useful. And then most importantly: what you see in the EVF is what you get - follows from the fact that you see a tv screen with what the sensor is exposed to - so if you over- or under expose your pictures then you see it prior to pressing the shutter. What would I go for? Well, if you shoot a lot with manual lenses then the mirrorless is a big help. If handling and shooting experience is more important to you, then the D750. If find I use both. And every time I grap the Nikon, it is with a sigh of relief - it is just a better friend. More easy to work with. And the battery lasts forever on the Nikon. The Sony burns batteries like chainsmokers burn cigarettes. Hope this gave some insight. Happy to elaborate. As said, I can make a blot post with a more thorough analysis if it is in demand!

@@frederikboving thanks so much for the insights. Yes I had both dslr and mirrorless. And real rangefinder too. I think based on your experience, one can see mirrorless as a mega-pixel-monster plus an economical rangefinder for manual focusing style (economical compared to leica). I can see huge use for landscape if the mirrorless body is weather proof plus tilt screen plus lighter to carry and mainly put on tripod when handling is not so important. In terms of mirrorless handling, maybe in 3-4 years time canon and nikon will beat sony when their ff mirrorless can reach their dslr speed and handling. Best of both world. And probably cheaper overtime as with most new technology.

Right you are! Just tested the ISO button and you are absolutely right! And it does not help to block the viewfinder - it still switches on. And using the record button as ISO button does not solve the problem either! (when my D5600 turns on the screen when I dont want to, then I just flip the LCD inwards, but that is not possible with the D750). Good point about the D800. I have stayed clear of the D800 due to the oil problem, but will give it a second look. I guess the 800E is the one to go for?

New2Photography the ISO button is the one thing that has stopped me using it as my primary camera, as it feels great to use and everything else about it is great. Though having looked online and through the manual and on the camera there is no way to turn it off, so for me at least I don’t think I will be keeping mine for very long. I’ve just sold by D800 to replace it with a D4 and I never had any oil issues, in fact I didn’t think it was susceptible to it (thought it was only D600/610). Though the D800e is the one to go for, but you pay a £100 or £200 more for one, and I couldn’t justify it. Just be aware the the ISO performance leaves a lot to be desired.

Fully agree. I kling on to my sigma 18-35 and have no plans to sell it. When I only had my D5600 it was the lens I used 98% of the time. Now the 70-300 is my main lens on the D5600 (for birds) but I still want the sigma 18-35 as my backup lens. It is a great lens!

That sounds like a good choice. I have never heard of anyone owning a D7200 (or D7100) that regretted their choice. I have never owned one, but have a feeling that these cameras are simply stellar.

The D750 is FF as I am sure you are aware. So if you have lots of APS-C glass, the D750 may be a big step if you also need to change a lot of glass. That said, I love the D750. It is one of the most uncomplicated cameras I have ever worked with. It never talks back. It just does what you ask it to. Regarding the D7100/D7200 - I have seen grown men cry because they parted with their beloved camera! So if you love the D7100, it may that staying with it - or maintaining it as a backup camera - would be a good idea.

Thanks, yes, your line of reasonning is very similar to the wedding photographer (applehead studios) that I studied when determining the D750 - he actually godt four D750s! I also find the 46mp a bit intimidating, although when doing heavy cropping of the 0.0000001% of my pictures that need so, I could use the extra pixels. 14 hours - that's serious. If you were carrying a Z6/Z7 you would need so many batteries to cover a full day that you would need a little trailer to carry it :-D

d850 is reallly bad in low light the 2 i had were rubbish went back to d750s

New2Photography my d850’s were rubbish in low light grain in images over 4000iso was like using a old d700! X3 all your shutter speeds to get sharp images. Hopefully the d760 will have touch screen and the 850 focus system

@@frederikboving IMHO the uptake of mirrorless will be slow. This is because there is a great inventory of DSLR cameras and associated lenses in the world. On top of that the cameras in mobile phones can take images that enable large scale prints to be made. The majority of the current young generation do not want to haul kilograms of glass and metal around to capture images. Software abounds that allows images from lesser devices than mirrorless cameras to be tarted up to look like competent images. I can take a D3 or D700 fitted with lenses of yesteryear and produce timeless large scale prints. I acknowledge you will have the look at me shooter with the latest and greatest hanging from their necks like a fashion accessory. We’ve seen that with hi tech running shoes used to walk or drive to the shops! Similarly snow bunnies on the slopes of Aspen dressed for arctic winters but never leaving the on slope cafe. The professional photographer may be expected to be seen with the latest gear, after all it’s a tax right off. But doesn’t need it to take great images. On top of that we have COVID-19 which is putting a brake on economies. Luxury items sales will slow. Folks will look for secondhand gear of quality instead of new. Discretionary spend will be away from photography. Travel has been severely affected which affects photographers. Weddings have been severely curtailed. I’m sure the birth rate will drop. This may be temporary but it will impact the development of mirrorless technology.

@@geoffreystone4849 You make some good and interesting points. And I think you are right that mirrorless will grow slower than what the manufacturers had hoped for. But I still think the mirrorless has some real advantages over DSLRs, and that for a segment of pro shooters (wildlife, sports, wedding) the mirrorless is a real step forward (AF capabilities). But as you say, for most hobby shooters a DSLR is more than enough.

BFS Yes. Tried my 35 mm DX lens on the D750 and it worked fine as you say. Can you tell me why you can see a larger picture in the viewfinder than what it records? Seems to me like Nikon are over cautious and don't want to use the outer part of the lens although it is available.

@@frederikboving The FX viewfinder just provided you with a DX mask for viewing. Although a hacked 10.5mm DX lens without the lens shade could cover almost the whole FF area. That would be the time you switch off the DX mode to disable the mask. Also, that was another reason for a higher MP FX camera, to get a higher MP DX mode. Such as 19.4 MP with the D850.

Yes, I see your point with the high MP. Probably should have gone for the D810 to re-use my DX lenses better! But I still have a feeling the DX lenses will be sitting on my D5600 more often than D750. With the 11-16 Tokina DX lens, the sensor captures exactly (= very close to) what I see in the viewfinder, including lens shade when going below 16 mm. With the Nikkor DX lens I can see more in the viewfinder than what the sensor captures. So it seems like Nikkor and non-Nikkor lenses behaves differently out-of-the-box. So I need to figure out how to disable the mask when using the Nikkor lens, if that is an option with the D750. Will study the manual. Thank you!

Found it: Shooting Menu -> Image Area -> Auto DX crop -> OFF. As far as I can tell, my 35mm 1.8G covers the FX frame in full. This seems to be supported by this article: photographylife.com/using-nikon-dx-lenses-on-fx-cameras

@@frederikboving You are the lucky one to have the DX lens with FX coverage. I only had three DX lenses for my D300 back then, that served as a backup to my D3 and 5D II. Have fun with your new camera!

Yep, those with D700's seems to love that camera to a degree non-D700 owners have a hard time to understand. But you are not alone. I believe I saw a youtuber who almost cried when he made a video about saying goodbye to the D700. Others have reported that they after selling their D700 after some time regretted their decision so much they bought another D700. So hold on to your D700 - you are not alone :-D

Hi Petronics, thank you! Just to make sure I get it right: (1) you have a Nikon D5300 body currently, (2) you want to upgrade the camera body (3) you want to stay with Nikon, (4) you want to stay with APS-C / cropped to be able to re-use your lenses (I assume), (5) video is less important (I assume). Upgrading within the 5x00 Nikon series (IMO) will not feel much of a upgrade. I have a D5600 and it has a pivoting touch screen, better dynamic range, better battery life, etc. You can see a detailed compare here: cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-D5300-vs-Nikon-D5600 But as said, I think you will not feel it as much of an upgrade - for example, the sensor, processor and AF system is very much the same. To upgrade, I would look at D7100 and D7200. In my end of the world (Scandinacia), I can get a new D7200 within your AUD1100 budget, but prices may vary across the globe. Buying used, especially if you do so via an authorized dealer, is a smart way of saving money IMO. You may also get some good glass as part of the deal and still stay within budget. The dream APS-C camera in the Nikon range is the D500 but I think you would have to accept a used model with a high actuation count to stay within budget. If you shoot wildlife and sports, the D500 is the king. Happy hunting! Curious to hear what you eventually decide to go for!

Yep, I guess there are many who will stay with the DSLR world. My main reason is access to cheap and great vintage Nikon glass with AF. The Z series takes away all mechanical AF. Hi Aljoša, are you aware that some of your APS-C lenses can be used on full frame still? Not the entire zoom range maybe, but some of the way. This could save you some money or at least give you some time to shoot with one of your current lenses while you save money for an FX lens. Hi Aditya, you make some good points. The D500 is by many called the king of DX and it is the preferred option for many pro wildlife and sport photographers. And of course I fully agree that a 100mp picture out of focus is 100mp wasted. Pictures in focus and a good AF system is key. Although I cannot prove it, it is my feeling that the gap between DX and FX over the recent years has narrowed and that DX has taken some giant steps to move closer to FX. And DX lenses are less expensive and lighter to carry. So most of us could probably do with DX and be fine. So by choosing FX of DX today I guess you only get a marginal improvement. The low light performance of my late D7500 was very close to what I see in the D750 - I think the new expeed processor has a lot to do with this. In terms of lenses, should you choose to buy some FX lenses, I can recommend the angry photographer and ken rockwell. They have pointed me to some great lenses that I bought used on e-bay for a bargain. I think that Canon and Nikon users have access to 40-50 years of used glass out there and you can make some mind blowing deals where you get top quality glass for next to nothing. The 50mm FX prime that I got is so sharp it is unbelievable. So you can get access to good FX glass without breaking the bank. I shoot a lot of low light photos. So low light performance AF wise is key to me, and the D750 is claimed to be top of the line here. I would agree based on approx 3 months of personal experience. That was one of the reasons I went for the D750. I hope it is clear from the video that I am not trying to convince anyone to make the same decision as me - I want to tell my story to give inspiration to others, and hopefully that will help them further in their decision process. So I am not an FX ambassador, I am just a photographer that went for a FX camera that I am now very happy to use. And I still have my D5600 in my kitchen window with a long lens on, ready to shoot the birds at the birdfeeder just outside. I know that a lot of experienced photographers are angy at newcomers and amateurs that talk a lot about technical aspects of gear and not about photography. I see the point. And the next discussion will probably be around mirrorless, 100mp and in camera stabilisers. Personally, I find 100mp (or even 46mp in the D850) a bit intimidating and the thought of doubling all my storage capacity on my PC, NAS and cloud services is not appealing to me. And I can see that the more resolution you get, the more sensitive to camera shake your camera gets. I drink too much coffee for 100mp... So no, 24mp is fine for me. I will stay in this range, I think. All talk about the technical aspects of camera gear takes away time to talk about photography as such, I've read somewhere. That is true. I have 5 videos on photograhy composition. They have in total been viewed 200 times. This video about my D750 has been viewed 30t+ times now! So based on this, the most people are not interested in photograpy, but selecting gear for photograhy. I don't know why it is like that. It just is. Market forces. So I think videos with camera reviews etc will be around for some time still. As will posts like this.

Hi John - glad to hear a story like that! This is the line of thinking I am trying to promote: you can get some great gear if you are willing to cave in on the requirement to have the latest and greatest technology! I have the RX mk3, and I think they are on mk6 now, but I do fine without 4K (my iPhone takes care of that) and I also do fine pulling the viewfinder out manually (mk6 has this motor driven). And the mk3 was half the price of mk6. And it still is a great camera!

@@frederikboving Precisely. Do we have the equipment to make a great photo? Yes. Are we enjoying the process of photography? Check. Once we have what we need can we be satisfied? Yes, when we choose to. Anyone living today has much to be thankful for in the realm of technology - we have excellent equipment available at a tremendous value for those whose focus is the enjoyment of the process and end product. Your D750 will serve you well -- I'm sure. :)

If you can wait, probably wise to do so - then you can compare the specs on the D750 and the D760 before making your decision. I just checked the prices on the D750 and the D810, and I think the price on the D750 has gone up since I bought it a few months back (150 USD or so) and that brings the D810 and the D750 price wise very close to each other, at least here in Europe. @@wsvlogandkitchen4596 It would be a deal breaker for me, too. The grip allows for a second battery and thus, more shooting time. The grip has a second shutter release and AF button making shooting vertically that much more convenient. Since I still have my D750 and also a D850, the D780 is NOT enough of an upgrade for me to even consider.

@@wsvlogandkitchen4596 I don't do video at all and if you are buying your first DSLR and don't do video either, the D750, the prices for which should be dropping once the D780 hits the street, would be a really good entry point. The D750 was my second full frame DSLR after a used D700 (since sold) and I took it with me to Vietnam in April 2019. It performed very well in the hot & very humid conditions. I believe it is still a very viable system and have no problem recommending it, especially as the D780 comes in at $2,300.00 US. Best of luck with whatever you buy.

Hi Tuan, the D800 is an older camera than the D750 (2 years), so the D750 beats the D800 when it comes to e.g. AF system, FPS, low light performance, battery life and tilting screen. Hi! I upgraded from D5600 to D750, and in terms of sharpness I see no difference! The D750 has better low light performance, better metering and much better autofocus system, but sharpness is the same. Also notice that if you have a lot of DX glass, then it may not be possible to use on a FX body (some DX can do it, some cannot (too much vignetting as it cannot cover the full area of the larger sensor)). I have no experience with Sony A7iii, but I do have the Sony RX100mk3 and it is excellent, so Sony can definately also make good cameras. The Z6 is (in my mind) very expensive, but as far as I can tell from reviews, it is a fantastic camera body and the EVF is one of the best ever made. So I guess all the options you are considering are good options, and that is why it is so difficult to choose. If you shoot a lot of landscape, I would look at the D810. If you shoot a lot of wildlife (birds) then I would look a the D500. If you need a good all-round camera, the D750 is a very good option and at a good price. FF has better low light performance, but if you do not shoot a lot in low light, you may not need it. If you need a lot of pixels because you shoot landscapes, then you should also look at the D810/D850 (both FF). Hope this helps.

@@frederikboving The big drawback to the Z 6 is that the lens adapter will not work with some of the lenses you show in your video. Any of the screw drive lenses will only manual focus. I love my 35 f 2 AF-D and my 60mm f 2.8 micro and they are orphaned by the Z system, along with my Tokina 100mm f 2.8. I have both Sony and Olympus systems. The 750 is a small body with a lot of features and I'm sure you will be happy.

Yes, I was a bit dissapointed to find that the in-body auto focus motor has been dropped by nikon in the Z6 and Z7 models, and I feel exactly like you: that my vintage lenses are so important that to use these without auto focus is a big drawback. So the Z6 suddenly became a whole lot less attractive. It has to be said through that the Z6 and Z7 come with focus peek systems where they color those parts of the picture that are in focus red and that makes manual focus a breeze as far as I can tell. But still, I love the comfort of autofocus :-D

Yes! I find 45mp a bit intimidating, coming from a D5600, and 99.9% of my pictures only make it to social media or - on a good day - shutterstock. The more I use the D750, the more I like it. If I shoot a bird or something where I really need to crop and sharpen, then I could use more mp, but I really can't justify paying 2-3 times as much for a camera when the D750 does the job so well as an all-round camera. The low light performance of the D750 continues to impress me - it litterally sees things in the dark that I cannot see with my eyes. Always exciting to see what the camera picked up when you lift the dark sections of a picture in Lightroom :-)

Social media...3mp will do, if they're not truncating it more already.(G)Shudderstock...before those online sources dropped to pennies per user, even a fast "Drunk driver hits tree" shot was never less than $25 per one use. Justifying high camera prices these days, very hard except for the rare few who can earn some living at it.

I'm sure the Lumix G85 is a great camera and I know that James Popsys is very happy with this camera. However, it comes down to personal preferences: I have no need for 4K video and certainly no need for 8 hours of recording. I have lots of Nikon glass that I would like to continue to use (switching to Panasonic glass even if I sold my Nikon glass would be very expensive). The D750 is also known to have amazing autofocus and especially in low light situations; and that is where I really need it. So I continue to be very happy with my D750 based on my personal preferences. Yours are different. Hence the Panasonic. And we are both happy with our choices :-)

Yes, I guess they have to make a living. In the video I argue that this 4 year old camera (the D750) is a very good buy because the technology is still very good and the price low. I think that is in line with your comment. You can in general save lots of money if you (1) buy not-the-latest technology or (2) used, or even better combine (1) and (2). It is an old camera and far from perfect, but it is amazing value for money. Hi mohammadreza! If your budget is limited so that you choices are down to choosing between what you list above, then it depends very much on what you are shooting. The D750 with a 50mm gives you no zoom, so I think that sounds like a challenge to work with. But of course, if you do mainly street photography, a 50mm may just be fine. And the D750 is stellar in low light. The D7500 and a6500 sound like better all round options. I do not know the Sony, but as it is a mirrorless it has some clear advantages in terms of what you can see on the screen and EVF prior to shooting. Also, the a6500 gets a really good review from DPREVIEW: www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-alpha-a6500/10. So for a good all round camera I would probably go for the Sony, but you will not get the good ergonomics and intuitive user interface from the Nikon. If you can live with that, I would go with the Sony. But as always: It is your money and your decision. Make sure you REALLY understand what is important to you and use that to guide your decision. Only you know what your preferences are and hence which camera is the best for you. Hope whatever you choose, makes you a happy photographer!

Uh, that is a tough question. I guess it depends on your needs and what is important to you. The D780 appears to be a combination of the D750 and the Z6. So when shooting in live-view mode it acts as a Z6, and when shooting in viewfinder mod, it is more like a D750. I would like the D780, but the extra money I would rather spend on lenses and gear.

Hi Jay, if you go from D7500 to D750, then you go from APS-C to full frame. If you have many APS-C lenses, then they may not work (or only work for some focal lengths) on the D750. So you will need to upgrade your glass in that case. That can be a costly operation unless you are an e-bay shark and can get out of your old glass with a minimal loss. In general, upgrading to D750 means FF glass which is more expensive and more heavy. If you are on a tight budget, I would think twice before going for the D750. Switching to Sony is worse in terms of costs. The Sony A7II is also FF, so same problem here - the APS-C glass may not be useful + you will have to use an adaptor for your Nikon glass if you keep it. And then there might be other costs - for example I have Yongnuo N685 flashes for Nikon and hoped I could use them as optical slaves for my Sony, but no, the YN685 has no optical slave system! So now I also have to invest in new flashes. So if on a tight budget, I would stay with the D7500. Let me know if this was useful - happy to elaborate if I can be of help.

I still have my Nikon D750 in 2022. Use it a lot with my Tokina 100mm for product shoots. It is still a great all-round camera. I also have the Z6ii, but the D750 is so easy to work with and it does not talk back, so it is often the camera I use for general purpose photography. Maybe it is because I have used it a lot and gotten used to it that it is like that, hard to say, but mirrorless - although nice with ability to zoom in the viewfinder and the like - is no revolution, merely evolution.

I think they have the same AF system, i.e. they auto focus equally well in low light situations (some say the D750 can see in the dark!). Uh, the D700! I have seen grown men crying after parting with their D700. Although I have never owned one, I sense that there was something magical about that camera. Good point if 12mp suffices.

@@frederikboving I still use a D700 along with my D500 :) I have been doing portrait/fashion work the last two years! I went between both cameras which have been great but I use the D700 more now because the results are great, file sizes are smaller and sorting out the photos is less hassle :) if I put them through lightroom :) I sometimes do 200-300 per shoot! which isn't bad at all! I tend to grab the D500 for event stuff where random things might happen, the D500 is a ninja for that stuff :)
