Is the Nikon D750 still worth buying in 2020? That's the complex and difficult question I attempt to answer in this video. If you've been following my channel lately you'll know that I have recently started shooting with this camera again and have been really impressed with it. Released in 2014 the camera is now well over 5 years old but in my opinion the Nikon D750 really defies its age and continues to offer a very compelling camera particularly for landscape photography. In this review video I run through the strengths and weaknesses of the camera to provide my assessment on whether its still worth purchasing. As always thanks very much for watching and if you have not yet subscribed to my channel please smash that subscribe button for more videos just like this. Take care :-)

I moved from the D7200 to a used D750 last year and have been very pleased. The two are very similar in their ergonomics and menus but two features I love that I didn't have before are the tilt LCD and the live histogram in live view. For someone with the urge to move from Nikon APS-C to full frame, I highly recommend the D750. The improvement in my astro photos is significant.

@@kylemorgan224 For wide shots like Milky Way, I use Tamron 15-30mm. For far away like Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy, I bought a vintage Nikon 300mm f/4 lens that I love. I have also used my Tamron 150-600mm for planets and the moon with good results. For Andromeda I use a Skywatcher Star Adventurer tracker to get longer shutter speeds. Good luck out there in the dark!

I still have a Canon 5D Mark II from 2008 that takes beautiful photos to this day. Of course a camera like the D750 is still worth buying in 2020. It's still as good as it was when it came out in 2014 and the specs hold up just fine some five years later. There's no need to constantly chase technology!

I am not a pro, I am an enthusiast who mainly shoots landscapes. I have been shooting with the D7200 but just recently picked up the D750 for a really good price. It’s a great camera and it fits in with what I want out of a camera. I don’t care about video at all, I don’t ever shoot at 1/8000, and the low light capability is amazing compared to my old D7200. 24MPix is fine, even enlarged quite a bit, and all my computers are old and would choke editing the high res files from the D850 anyway. If I bought a Z6 it wouldn’t improve the quality of my photos, the sensor isn’t that much different, plus only one card slot, worse battery life, no AF with my D series glass (though I’d get focus peaking). Couple all of that with the fact that I’m not made of money, and I am absolutely fine with the D750.

Good review James. I bought a D750 last week, upgrading from a D7100. On Sunday I spend a few hours shooting bird of prey in very gloomy woods on an overcast day. The results were impressive. Even up to ISO 2000, there was very little noise in the images, colours were rich with warm tones and dynamic range was superb. I'm so pleased (so far) that I didn't upgrade to another crop sensor.

Hi from Western Canada. I upgraded to D750 in 2018 from a Canon 7D. It was a great choice. The Nikon system is so easy to learn. I have 2 bodies now. I love them. Mirrorless seems to me to be still finding it's way in the market. If Nikon upgrades the Z6, I'll have a hard look. I really like the idea of using focus peaking. It would be a nice feature to have in the toolbox.

Bought a D750 last year. All the positives you noted were the reasons. OMG - I’m not a pro, ... but this camera is good enough to do pro work. It’s perfect for travel, coupled with a smaller, capable camera. All I could want. Also, ... I’m invested in full frame “D” Nikon lenses, ... so that’s also the reason that it is the best value for me. By the time, I want to go the mirrorless route, I will have gotten so much more value out of the equipment I’ve purchased over the years. At some point, I’ll probably let go of all the lenses, tripods, etc. - and, I don’t even know if anybody would buy all that stuff. I’d probably simplify my photography considerably - but, ... I’m not “there” yet, ... and it makes sense to use all the glass I already invested in. Also, ... I still have a D80 that does a fine job for me as a back up camera. I just can’t afford to chase the latest technology - happy to get it after it is 3-5 years old. You have to understand what your goals are and keep perspective. It is very, very easy to fool yourself into thinking that you are being intelligent in your choices, .... but often you are lured by the technology lust.

I had a similar disaster my D7200 also got washed away by a rogue wave I cried! but after seeing your video I decided to replace it with a full frame camera a D750 bought it second hand but like new amazing value. The controls and menus are almost identical to the D7200 so the learning curve was negligible. for anyone considering moving from cropped sensor to full frame this is perfect. Although bigger and heavier than the D7200 it fits beautifully in the hand. The image quality is lovely. The money I've saved on the camera I invested in better lens. Considered a D810 but could not justify the big hike in price. Thanks for the very informative video

Used D750 since 2016, bought new at a good discount. Just a point about buffering. If I’m taking multiple shots, either limit to ten shot bursts or run the shutter speed to match the frame file size. My message: work to your camera capabilities. Never had a problem. Otherwise, agree with all your observations.

I'm messed around with photography in the past and, wanting to get serious, decided on a full frame DSLR sensor. My hesitation with the D750 was its age - 6 years in the tech world is a lifetime and I wasn't sure about spending a lot for something that old. But time after time I read reviews that raved about how well it held up compared to more recent models. Long story short - I pulled the trigger on the D750 and am glad I did. Everything you say is right on - it just feels good when holding it. The features, the menu layout, the feedback during and after taking a pic - just a very well designed camera. And despite my lack of experience I'm thrilled with the photos it takes. My wife tries to compliment me, but every time my reply is that it's all the camera - the thing takes phenomenal pictures! Thank you for the review James!

Do you even own a camera dude? There is nothing true about your comment. I have a mirrorless A7R3 and been shooting a year with it, my sensor is still spotless with no dust after a years worth of use and switching lenses on it multiple times a day. I also have the D810 and DX has no compatibility issues with FX cameras, only difference is sensor size. Everything else is identical including body to lens data signal. I use DX lenses on my fx body all the time to get a vignette. Lenses work flawless.

Fantastic Video James. I’ve always been a strong advocate that higher megapixels in a same size sensor will always result in more noise when recovering shadow details. Coupled with the face that unless you’re printing extremely large/billboard prints 15-18 megapixels is more than enough. Thanks for sharing mate and all the best for 2020 and beyond. PS mirrorless technology is IMHO unfinished and unnecessary.

I upgraded from a D7100 which I loved but decided to switch to FX. Still to date I love my D750, the grip is amazing and image quality, dynamic range and low light image quality is outstanding. Unfortunately It’s a little to bulky and heavy to travel with. For that I use a Fujifilm system but in all honesty, I miss traveling with it. To me, the D750 controls and ergonomics are a lot easier to use than my Fujifilm x-t2. I need to promise myself to start using it more on short trips.

I can testify to the D750 being bombproof. In the spring of this year, slippery mud around a loch, saw myself, D750 and Sigma 150-500mm lens plunge headlong into the muddy water. It was a total submersion incident. But worst of all, it was very smelly black, muck. Thought it was a write off as it was saturated. But to my pleasant surprise, after a thorough dry out and clean, which took the best part of a week, the old girl sprang back to life as good as new. I didn't fare so well, didn't even try cleaning my clothes..... I would have probably killed the washing machine 😀. Great video.

Hi! Thank you so much for making this video, it is exactly what I wanted to see. I enjoyed my D7200 and was waiting until I could upgrade to full frame. Even though the Nikon D780 was recently released, I purchased the D750 which is in route to me. I carefully considered which upgrade I wanted including the D810, another awesome camera. However, for ALL of the reasons you mentioned in the video, including the tilting screen, I purchased the Nikon D750. When asked why I did not go with Sony I stated the reason you mentioned in the video. Besides, I am pretty sure it actually has a Sony sensor. I told people I purchased a camera that combines Nikon technology with a Sony sensor, the best of both worlds for me. I have loved and wanted the D750 for a long time and it is now financially obtainable for me. While no longer the newest camera on the block, the price combined with superb features makes the D750 an outstanding choice. I also was tempted to follow the crowd towards mirrorless, but the D75O truly is still an amazing camera well worthy of consideration. You mentioned that you have done some of your best work in the last year; no one will look at your wonderful compositions and think they were done on a DSLR with 5 year old technology (which was the gold standard for years). Many photography masters created amazing art with far less than the D750. I chose to get the awesome D750 and still have money left over for the essential good glass needed for any full frame. The last benefit for me is all of the native and third party lens options available both new and especially used which is a huge financial bonus. Both my camera and lens will be here in 2 days and I am very excited. I am really grateful for your video; you further confirmed that I made the best and wisest choice for me! #D750StillRocks

Thanks for the video, I am thinking of upgrading from a D200 in the near future and this video really sold the D750. I also am keeping an eye on the mirrorless cameras but someone entering the field, I don't have the cash to throw at new systems and like you said, I can find D750 houses for €700 euros. This with Nikon's ability to run all lenses is what keeps me with the brand.

Thanks, James, for the exact video on the D750 I've been looking for. My new D750 arrives tomorrow! and I've been doing some research (too late for that) or rather affirming that buying this camera was in fact the right decision. I sold my 12 year old Canon 5D2 and bought some nice Sony and Fujifilm mirrorless ones, but then wanted something more substantial, so, if half of what you've said about the Nikon D750 is true, I think I made the right decision. Keep up the great, informative videos! And, neat cat!

Hello James, I recently purchased a D850 instead of a Nikon Z6 or Z7 for all of the obvious reasons. I believe Nikon is very late to the mirror-less game, was late bringing glass to market to go with the system and their battery life leaves a lot to be desired. At some point I may have to transition, but until then, my D850 and D750 will support my needs.

My partner is still using one professionally for personal work. Even after many trials of my own Sony setup, she will not switch. Have to say for stills it really is phenomenal, it will eek out every last bit of performance from any lens you throw at it. If your thinking about it, genuinely you wont regret it. One worthy mention is buying second hand there was a small amount that were recalled for a shutter issue, no biggie but worth the question to a seller

I love this review. Re: cropping.... I find that having a film background means that I tend to be more slow and meticulous about setup and composition to begin with. I try not to need to crop to begin with, so it seems like not being able to crop means just setting up compositions carefully to begin with. I'm looking into a D750 for low light, and a camera I'm ok with using to travel overseas.

Had mine since Jan 15, fantastic camera (despite the shutter recall, after which it's performed perfectly). Just before Christmas I dropped mine so it's currently away getting the stuck mirror fixed so I've had to fall back on my stand-by D700......I now have to work slightly harder! The only bugbear is the rubber eyecup I've lost about five genuine Nikon examples so I'm now on cheapo Chinese versions....I've only lost one of them!

I bought this beast when it first came out to replace a stolen Canon 5d Mk II. I just wanted to try Nikons! Boy was I missing out. I still have other Canon cameras and Sony A7R II, but the Nikon D750 is my go to workhorse. For my application, it's the most suitable, easy menu, lots of customizations, light, and comfortable for a FF, it's just a joy to use. The Canon 5d Mk IV and Sony A7R II still produce excellent photos, and has a auto focus system that's just as reliable, but they don't come close in terms of the dynamic range. In reality, they are all equally capable and will get the job done, and after post you won't be able to tell the difference, but the D750 is the most fun and easy to use!

This past year I purchased a Z7 which pretty much has it all over my D750, BUT when I photograph weddings and events I primarily use my 750 because of the 2 cards and the photos are more than acceptable. I shoot all the portraits with both cameras, still being cautious about losing such important images. The Z7 image quality is off the charts, I can't imagine why Nikon put only one slot in it. If it wasn't for all the Nikon glass I own I probably would have gone in another direction. All that being said, I have no plans on parting ways with my D750 any time soon. If you figure in the price today, it just may be Nikon's best camera.

Great review on the D750, I just recently purchased one used, it's an amazing camera in 2020. I had a D800 previously but my Macbook Air couldn't keep up with editing the large raw files. The ISO performance of the D750 is really good up until at least ISO 8000, dynamic range seems to be the same as the D800. IMO if you can afford to purchase one in 2020 it's the best value full frame camera on the used market. Get the D610 to save money but the ergonomics aren't nearly as good.

Great video, James. As you said, too many people get caught up in the latest cameras, and while an argument can be made to upgrade to the latest if your current camera is preventing one from getting the shots you want, it may be better to spend the money on a lens you don't have, attend a workshop or even travel to a location you've never been to before. BTW, Misty is a very adorable kitten.

I'm having a D750 and a couple of F-mount lenses: Sigma 35mm 1.4, Nikon 14-24 2.8, Nikon 105 2.8 Macro, Nikon 50mm 1.8 and a Nikon 16mm Fish-eye lens. My biggest and only issue with my D750 is video capability. I had no idea at that time that I would love to get into video as well and every since I am struggling and not wanting to invest any more money into my Nikon setup, only because I feel forced to switch one day to Sony (or perhaps Canon). I need perfect video autofocus and an in-body sensor stabilizer. Actually a hybrid, great photo and video camera in one. I can't carry two cameras with me, it's also hard to switch all the time - missing the best moments. A switch from photo to video mode seems way better, also having the same look with the same lens. I'm so sad that Nikon is the worst brand for video I could have chosen. But I had no idea at that time what my needs will be in the future. Big mistake! I love my D750 for all but video. P.S. I switched from a Sony a77 to the Nikon D750, what a bad joke but Sony switched at that time to new mounts with their Sony A7 line up and I did not want to buy new lenses... it's always the same problem. Happy New Year, James! Excellent and fair pros and cons of this camera based on your experience. Much the same can be said of other solid brands and models - upgrade treadmill not a good thing. Great IQ is largely enabled by high quality Nikon glass. Elephant in the room that you didn’t mention is that the 750 was subject to multiple recalls (serious shutter issues). If someone is thinking about buying a used copy they would be prudent to do their homework and check the SN to see if it was one of the recalled units - if it was, they would be wise to get credible documentation that repairs were made. BTW, didn’t think you were a “cat person” - expect the critter to appear in future posts.😸

I’m still clicking my D90 and it is still good beyond its supposed maximum shutter actuation. With the money I have saved that can buy a brand new D750, I will practice delayed gratification and save more to buy a newer model like D850. Second hand at a give away price I might be tempted to get a D750 and abandon my quest to save more for a newer model.

Great video. I agree with you James. Despite the arrival of the new D780, equipped with its new touch screen (woohoo!) Nikon's D750 (imo) remains one of Nikon's best ever (stills) cameras equipped with a sensible size sensor. Its the same sensor that's in the D780. But the D780 costs best part of two grand. Where an excellent/like new used D750 can be bought for less than half that price. So right now, because the D750 has been superseded by newer offerings such as Nikon's D780 & the D850, the D750 really is a billy bargain. Its probably the most useful, whilst still being affordable, FX format Nikon DSLR on the market which is capable of pro level stills photography. MPB is a good place to go for a 'like new' used one with a low shutter count. But why do I like the D750 so much ? That's a really difficult question to answer. Until you've used one a couple of years. I guess its down to what you feel comfortable using. Oddly, I have Nikon's D810 too. The D810 has a larger sensor - but I don't find myself using it that often. Mainly because I don't need the resolution to crop heavily, or print my shots to poster size. I did spend a good while salivating over the prospect of an upgrade to Nikon's D850. But realistically, would the D850 be any better for me & my photography than the D750 ? After 12 months dithering, I decided if I bought one, it would only end up occupying a position on the shelf right next door to my D810. I'd likely only rarely need the level of resolution the D850's 45MP sensor offers. So.. great news. I saved a stack of dough. For the foreseeable (or at least until I get bored & decide to give mirrorless a whirl) the D750 remains the everyday workhorse.

So glad to hear you've got things sorted with the reluctant insurers. The Z Ecosystem is tempting on the weight side of things, buying new lenses not so much, although using manual for landscapes means vintage Nikon lenses come into play. Personally I'd get the D850 again, it's got the perfect amount of pixels, I reckon keeping up with file sizes will be a future money pit.

I would not part with this camera for a while yet. Liking this camera so much and wanting to do landscapes as well I decided to leave my d750 as my indoor camera and purchased a d7500 touch screen for landscapes. I feel now I have an awesome combination now. For ppl out there in the market for price value you can loose on either one of those cameras. Gotta love Nikon.
