It's not that bad. A click or two of the cursor key and you'd have zipped by it. Unlike the non-skippable ads at the beginning.

Bought my D780 and I never looked back. Well, except to check that my car’s lights blinked when I clicked the remote to lock the doors before I hiked out into the countryside to shoot some great photos. Great camera!

This is the best hands-on introduction I've ever seen. Most of the reviews they only read from the spec sheet. Everybody can do that, but we want to see the result of pictures compared to others. Thank you for bringing it up this way!

Oh, I checked this video 11months ago and at that point D780 doesn't appeal that much to me because of the pressure from Z side. But after I had touched the Z series and understand the EVF, I need to check this video again. You both described very well and accurately pointed the merit of OVF as well. And I realized that D780 is the well designed hybrid camera indeed. Thank you!

I know this has been beaten to death, but I really appreciate how much more positive DPReview is these days. I joined back in the Phil days, and hated that he was a Canon fanboy and pretty much hated everyone else. Nothing against Canon, but they didn’t exactly invent photography. You guys are a breath of fresh air.

Yup, I can't justify changing my D750 for anything in the market presently, including Sonys, Fujis, etc etc. It's a beautiful camera and capable of creating outstanding images.

I wouldn't go that far. That implies only .1% of the market shoots video or fast action, or makes big prints. Very unlikely that's true.

D780 is a phenomenal camera. The thing D750 guys wanted was video, and now they have it. In fact, really good video. You get to choose between a DSLR D780 or mirrorless Z6 II. Great to have choices.

I purchased the D780 as my first FF camera. I kept my Nikon D7100, as it's still great for wildlife photography and travel, being a little smaller. The D780 excels in low light situations. The D780 IQ is excellent. I considered the Z6II, but did not think I could part with my Swiss Army knife of lenses, my Nikkor 60mm D, and the mirrorless lens adapters can not enable the old D series AF system.

Wish there was a HLG comparison in this. The other benefit of optical finders is that there is zero lag from needing to pull data off the sensor to display in and evf. I would have missed the pop up flash as well, but it pushes people towards their RF trigger flashes, and apparently improves the weather sealing.

I've switched away from Nikon to Fuji and MFT over the last years, but this camera really makes me want to pick up a DSLR again.. there's just something to that shooting experience, especially knowing that if you *do* need to use liveview sometimes, it won't be a terrible experience anymore.

I have always been DSLR user, happy (very happy) with D750 and other Nikon APS-C bodies. The only issue is that good glass is bulky and heavy. When I travel I wish I had a more compact and light sistem therefore I look with interest at the m43 system, particularly I am interested in Panasonic models like the GX8 or GX9. I am not into video stuff. I doubt I may be disappointed with IQ and don't use it, eventually. I'm a hobbyist therefore I have to invest carefully 🙂. May I ask you what is your experience with m43 and if you are happy with it? As you come from Nikon I am interested in your experience.

@@ilmatanela1816 I'm very happy with MFT, my main camera is the Panasonic G80/G85 - it has similar ergos to a DSLR, but in a smaller form factor. I also have a GX80/GX85, but honestly the extra size savings compromise ergonomics too much for my taste (unless you enjoy shooting with your thumb on the shutter) - I mostly use that one as a B body if I ever feel the need to bring more than one, usually with the Olympus 45 1.8 or Panasonic 12-32 pancake zoom on it. Any lens bigger than that, you'll not have any size savings with how far it protrudes from the body vs the G80's grip. IBIS is great, ergos of the G80 and E-M1 bodies are fantastic (E-M1 II is my dream body at the minute), Panasonic dual IS is AMAZING but not required. My ideal full loadout would be the Oly 12-40, Panasonic 35-100 2.8, with Olympus 17 1.8/Panasonic 20 1.7 for an everyday walkabout default lens choice. Maybe a 17 1.2 Pro if I ever do something like low light event coverage. Oh well, most of that is far into the future - I'm a hobbyist myself, and while I'd love to make photography a side income, I'm not rushing to get it there at the minute. Hope this is a useful perspective for you, I'm always up to chat more if you're interested. I have a flickr account with the same name as on here if you'd like to see some photo examples, though not sure how much use it'll be to your use case.

Nikon cameras I have owned over the past decade and a bit… D300 then D750 (excellent) then D500 (mistake) then recently the D780. I always sell an exiting camera when a acquire a new one so I own only one camera at a time. I really like the D780, from trivial things like all my devices (computer, phone and camera) use the same USB-C charger and cable - so practical. Less trivial: I like staying with a DSLR (and the D780 is a really good workhorse DSLR) but I like also having the amazing live view and video capability of the Z6, all in the same camera. A really good compromise. Well done Nikon.

I'm a 750 user - I still fancy the 780 over the Z6 - I'll need a 85 Tamron VC tho for video with it not having any stabalisation. I have heard the digital stabalisation is ok if you are just holding still (Taylor Jackson).

@@darekm6859 Intangibles. When I'm using a DSLR I feel like I'm using a nice camera to take a picture and I have to learn the instrument. Mirrorless just feels like a glorified cell phone, the ultimate point-and-shoot. It just doesn't really inspire me in the same way.

@@matthewwells1606 I couldn't agree more. I had a 2013 Infiniti G37X which I loved, and when the straight V6 started up, it put a grin on my face. When I got the 2016 Q50 (both leases,) it was actually faster and nicer overall, but didn't feel as fast or fun. It feels disconnected because it is all drive-by-wire. I'd like of like a Silent ML mode with a custom camera shutter sound. Why didn't they think of this?! Point and shoots do this. :) Happy shooting!

In many DPReview videos, we see Jordan giving very detailed and useful information regarding each individual camera's video settings and capabilities. In several DPReview videos, Jordan gives lots of very useful information with regards to how he edits / enhances / processes the videos in preparation for posting to KZfaq. What would be really useful (as so many KZfaqrs, including myself, shoot our content on iPhones) would be to see how Jordan would film/record a video for DPReview. Then how Jordan would edit and post-process the video in preparation for posting ?? This would certainly be a very useful video for many DPReview followers/subscribers.

I understand that the pop-up flash was removed to improve weather sealing although I never had a problem using my D750 in the rain.

A fine review as usual. The lack of battery grip option is a great shame, as the extra grip area and physical size can be useful with larger lenses, plus of course the extended battery life. Pro's like me often appreciate a larger camera for working with, but also that ability to take off the grip to have a smaller body too, is handy. Nikon seems to have some slightly confused spec' thinking these days.

D780 significantly differs from D750. Watch Peter Zelinka's review under Astro Photography title (I have no association/relation with him). It approaches ISO differently and has much less color noise in low light and with long exposures. Even if you are not into astro-photography, there are a couple interesting lessons in there - even when dry and technical.

No one mentions the ergonomic differences of using F-mount lenses with adapter on Z series. Small bodies for larger lens + adapter , not the best. I really found out about ergonomics when I first used an old pentax film SLR and realised how much Better the shooting and carrying experience was . Night and day. I grew to hate my mirror less camera overnight, actually made me angry how bad the ergonomics were. Admittedly this was a light Sony APSC camera, but ergonomics are so important and rarely addressed when discussing adapted lenses. Consider ergonomics over features is my message, you'll be glad for it. Also small lenses rule ;)

Tony Martins yeah they would only give me $500 for my d500. What a ripoff!! I’ve had it since May of last year and it’s in perfect condition!! But unless I am going to start shooting video (I would like to but the the af in video on the d500 with a sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 is just bad) I’m not side-grading, it’s a upgrade in some ways for me but in other ways it’s a downgrade.

Faced with my D750 acting up a bit (possibly due to overuse - it has been a workhorse in last few years), the D780 looks attractive as replacement. Currently the D780 is priced "the exact same cost" as a new Z6ii in Canada at $2699 CDN dollars. Why pick a DSLR D780 over the newer mirrorless z6ii when D780 lacks ibis in video mode. Well, the DSLR still has great autofocus in still mode from phase detect in low light (for faster lock on in low light when compared to z6 so it beats mirrorless for now) as this video above states, that is a strong advantage. As a primary still photo user with lots of FX lenses, and with only occasional video use, the DSLR just makes better sense. And a larger grip for hand holding. For video, most videos would be on tripod for vlogging or interviews, product shoot video, so Ibis is not as much needed. My input to anyone considering a D780.

Why not get a refurbished or low shutter count D750 for $900?! What did you go with? Something smaller dedicated to video with a gimbal seems like a much better option no?!

@@skyrunr I ended buying a D780 body for my FX lenses, ... plus a Z5 with M3 crane gimbal. Z5 was $1000 less than a Z6ii. Selling off some Canon gear. The image quality of D780's BSI sensor is great, Raw files are a bit bigger for more details, very happy with choice. I can get a Godox V860iii for external flash if needed which works for TTL. Love the larger handling of DSLRs for photos.

Apparently d780 has dropped 300 dollars every may through June since release, so this summer im planning on buying one. I was planning on getting d750, but I need a camera that has more battery power, better low light, and a touch screen. Thank you for this review though, it really helps out.

I also have a wonderful Nikon D780. I really like them to shoot video in 4k quality. I would also like to see the lessons with the Nikon sb-900 and Nikon sb-910 flash, namely the settings, perhaps remote shooting with two flashes.

Changing of an era. First rangefinder (1910-1960), then slr(1960-2010) including digital version. Then mirorless era (2010-2060 dunno). I own sony a200, i got it back when i was in univ (2006), i use right now z50. Its experiences makes any dslr obsolete, if z6-2 far superior than z50

I could care less about the Squarespace ads. Cost of doing business folks. Don't like it. Do what you want. Easy! It is your computer right? I like the D780 for what it is doing for folks with that F mount collection of lenses. Hardly a concession for not being in the Z camp. It is just another excellent option. Good Job Nikon!

You can add a grip to the D750. You can't on the D780.

@7:30 I found the focusing to be a bit of a pain on my Z6 in very low light situations. Has been a real pain when shooting some events. That's why I'm looking at a D780 or second-hand D4S as a second body. I'm finding that in some situations I want that optical viewfinder back. Also when shooting with flash in dark situations. I still have all F-mount glass so it would be native. Finally Nikon hasn't realised a proper vertical grip for the Z6. Try shooting with a Z6 with a 70-200 on an FTZ adaptor in portrait orientation for a few hours!

I have 2 af-d lens and sometimes I do like to shoot video. Jordan’s recommendation has sold me. Now just patiently waiting for the price to drop or some used ones come on the market. So far I’ve only seen one advertised used located a 12 hour drive away.

When I first heard about some of the specs before the release I said the same thing about a hot shoe EVF. Jared Polin did something crafty when he reviewed Canon's 1DX mkiii. He used a loupe that goes over the LCD screen on back. It has an eyepiece like the viewfinder. Of course your battery won't last as long that way but he had full use of the screen on back. It might feel a little awkward using it but it would allow you to use all of the focus points that the live view has. You might could use it that way for sports and action shots. I bought my d750 last year in May. When it first came out it was priced close to what the d780 is priced so I don't think the price is too high starting off. Give it a year and prices will come down some. I think it would be a great upgrade from my d750 when I'm ready for that.

I've switched from d800 to z6 now I'm thinking I need to go back to DSLR with d780 I missed the ergonomic of DSLR and also the weight is not much different when you using the f 2.8 lenses lol

My D800 hasn’t been out of my bag since I got the Z6 two months ago. I’ll still keep it along with my D700 but the Z6 rocks!

I went to the Z6 from the D810 . The D810 is great , but I’m loving my Z6 . Anxiously Waiting for the Z8/9 !

Interesting review Chris and Jordan. I still have all my gear Nikon from my D810 and D750. I never sold anything (except my non-auto focus equipment, years ago) Don't like schleping the big DSLR's any longer, using Panasonic Lumix M4/3rds now. Maybe if I was 20 years younger I'd upgrade my D750, or D810. I am getting great resuts with my Lumix G9 and GH5, plus numerous other M4/3rds Lumix cameras. Regardless, I love watching your reviews. They are to the point and right on. Please keep them coming. Bravo!

the d780 is great -- its the right size and does everything well and cost less.

I understood the removal of the pop up flash was to improve weather sealing. I also miss it with my Z6 however I bought a Nikon SB400 which is so compact I hardly notice it's on. If I had to choose I would rather have better weather seal.

On my D750 the onboard flash would pop up at odd times. Glad they removed it.

You do know you can turn off the pop up flash on the d750 if you don’t want that flash popping up when not needed.

Christina Dalley It actually has stopped. Once I stopped using my SB600, the onboard flash doesn’t pop up anymore. I’m using the Godox.

If the D780 is pretty much the Z6 (and Z 6II), then it could be the better choice for fast moving action tracking thanks to the OVF which doesn't have a delay.

Love the Rockies. All I film on is a canon m100 though 😂 really budget set up. But since I hike a lot, it’s great for its weight (or lack there of) Edit: subbed. Great channel

The z series cameras I believe have a function where when switching between video and photos, the settings for each are maintained (e.g. two different settings are maintained and switching modes activates one and deactivates the other, until switched back). Does the D780 also have this?

Agree with the pop-up flash. That is thing that annoys me on latest Pentax K1 and K3II too.. and it seems that the incoming K-new lacks it too. :( I'm using it on K5 time to time as wireless flash trigger. And it of course is flash in case you are in dark place with no external flash and you need to shoot something.

Although the D780 is missing the popup flash. It would have been nice if you could cover Nikon’s flashes. I’m interested in knowing if the external flash illuminator works with the autofocus system in low light situations.

Great video as always. I have the D750 and love it but I got the D780 used in great condition for the battery life and mainly the long shutter speed! I am not liking the missing flash but I rarely use flash anyway..
