Today we look at a Nikon D780, successor to the Nikon D750 and little sister to the Nikon D850. But why would you buy a DSLR in 2022? Why not just get a Nikon Z camera? In this video we discuss.

Hey Omar, I'm a wedding photographer from the Philippines, I noticed that you have a bunch of cameras, you have different brands and models, it seems like it's too much for your photography works, can I have that D780 for a Christmas gift?🥹, I've been wishing to have that model on my own but it's too expensive since I don't have enough budget for that beast camera. I’m noticing a LOT of KZfaqrs are talking about the Z6 II and the under-the-radar D780 and I feel like they’re kind of late to the party… the ergonomics of that D780 is a joy and second to none

Have to say, my d750 had a better grip. The d780 didn't hang as nice on the fingers as the d750 when holding it down by your side, it would slip and you'd have to arch your fingers a little whereas the d750 the grip was a little deeper, better angled and the weight was better distributed so you could hang the camera by your side with one or two fingers

That’s because KZfaqrs are getting kickback to promote mirrorless to consumers that are easily influenced to think DSLRs are dead.

I love my D780! I used a Z6 for over 2 years and had a great experience, but the lenses were too expensive and using my F mount lenses was clunky. I find that OVF is a purer shooting experience but the D780 had a lot of the features I used with Z6. Great review!

I totally agree... I own both a Nikon D series mainly because I love the OVF and all the tactile controls... but it's awful for video. So I picked up a Z5 when they were including the FTZ adapter as my lighter walk around camera. I do like the histogram the EVF offers but the OVF still rules when it comes to viewing the real world. Thank you for your videos.

Advantage of the D780 is the live view component, the AF mode button, and access to legacy Nikon lenses. Such a great camera. ETA: all the points you make are great, however, and it's hard to make a D780 make financial sense unless you have a shelf full of F-mount lenses.

You would think that with focus peaking D780 would be great with older lenses. HOWEVER, there is a (IMO) major bug when using older lenses with LiveView, which is that the LCD doesn't compensate correctly for the aperture you're at... If you're interested, I have made a video on this topic and I am trying to get Nikon to patch it in a future fw update. If only more people could complain about it to them....

@@LaurencioAmaedus Yes, the latest FW almost entirely patches it. Almost, because you still don't get a lightmeter of you turn exposure preview off. But at least you get one on the top LCD and the exposure preview now works flawlessly!

I switched from my old D750s to D780’s for my wedding photography. Very happy with it. For posed shots live view focussing wide open with eye detection is awesome., nails focussing everytime.

I have considered the D780, same sensor as the Z6 but easier to use while getting creative with older glass. The thing I miss most when going to my D750 is not seeing the live histogram in the EVF. Everything is a tradeoff. If there was a camera that did everything that anyone could ever want, we'd all be using the exact same system, wouldn't that be fun. 🍻cheers!

I shoot D610 for almost 8 years now, still working great still provide me great image qualtity. (As an photographer enthusiast not professional) I think I still going to use my D610 for a while.

I to have a D610 but I'm wanting that bigger, faster sensor in D780. I just bought a D7200 b/c I have some DX lenses. I'm probably going to sell all that to get this D780.

Still rocking my D610 myself…and just like you said, as a non-pro, using the D610 for the occasional formal shoot is sufficient, specifically with good quality glass. However, I’ve been considering changing the camera to perhaps this one or the D750 which goes for about $700 used.

It’s a great camera. I played with it a bit when they released it. It’s fun to shoot “old school” but I believe, like you said, that 500$ less in price will sell this even better. The IQ is Nikon, great colors and beautiful rendition. Now, please send it my way, I need to see if you were right about all the things you mentioned🤣😂🤣. Good video, man. Be safe

Great review. I moved to Canon a few years back and have recently decided to move back to Nikon. But I've just bought a D700, and couldn't be happier. And that body costs a lot less. I like that they've kept most controls the same on the 780 (putting the modes back on the wheel on the left is even better than the D700). There are so many cheap AF(D) lenses out there that still perform, I can recommend it for someone who wants to experience the joys of an optical viewfinder. D700 second hand cost just over $300, absolute steal for such a great camera. And then if you want more pixels and such you can always move to Z with adapter or 780 and keep using all your lenses.

I can’t let go my D750 even though I have A7iii for years now. I think I enjoy it more than my A7iii. I’m thinking of getting a use D810. That’s how much I enjoy DSLR.😍🥰😘

Thank you for spreading so much well deserved Nikon love, especially after I wrote you that comment some time ago ✌😍 About the issue with those AI- s lenses used via Live View, I do hope people know how to enter their values into the camera settings correctly. Any thoughts on that one? And, this is objectively a great review on, yes a niche camera but for us faithful Nikon photographers it's a blessing. Imagine selling Nikkor 105mm AF-D f2 DC or 180mm AF-D f2.8 or the Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 ZVII... never! You have very well deserved to have me as your subscriber! 👍😎👋

I've had a sony a6400, a7iii, even a Nikon Z5, then a Canon 80d and m50mark2 and nothing compares to the d780, even with this kit lens this is the best camera, the most beautiful photos and the best feeling in the hand.

You always get to the point in a logical but friendly way. I still shoot my really old Nikons and am amazed at the quality. (D80,D300S). But this year, I'm thinking of going Z mount, the Z7/Z6, are great buys right now and I hear the firmware updates have made them a lot better than they were at launch.

I’ll never get used to the cheap build feeling of mirrorless cameras. Even the high end mirror less cameras feel cheap compared to a D780 or D850. Don’t get me started on those Z lenses. Yes they are sharp but feel like trash. Plastic fantastic. You pay way more for cheaply made products these days. I miss the gold rings of Nikon. Canon kept their red rings on their L lenses, why didn’t Nikon do the same with their gold ring lenses.

Thank you for saying that people should try out cameras for themselves rather than listening to the noise. Out of all the camera brands I’ve shot with over the years but I’ve never shot with a Nikon camera with prices of older DSLR prices, it’s tempting.

I was able to try mirrorless for almost 2 years. I found a lot of advantages there, but I never managed to get used to it. I took great pleasure in coming back to reflex that I am not ready to let go! I love the wallpaper on your screen ! Where can I find it ? 😉

You hit on a lot of points that I found myself dealing with when I switched to Nikon this year. I couldn't afford a second Z body so I matched up my Z5 with a D7100. There were so many contributing factors to match a APS with the Z5 FF. I am using the same battery, dual slots on both, and I picked up lots of DX AF-s glass. That is my only contention at the moment, DX lenses. I am considering trading in the D7100 for a Z50, not sure. The D7100 is heavier and larger but overall I do like it. I prefer mirrorless, but learning to live with the DSLR for now... great video, love how you hit so many of the factors I have considered. Thanks!

I paired my D850 with a z50. I use my D850 for birds and landscape shots. Wanna get those 'professional' look. While my z50 I use for family outings (which is most of the time) and street photography. Works very well for my kind of use. Though sometimes I look at a used z7 lustingly..

I've been looking for reasons to let go of my D7100 but still compared to the D750 and Z5, IQ is still really good. I too was considering the Z50 but I'm not willing to have separate batteries (EN-EL14s) and not having IBIS breaks the deal for me. When Nikon releases a true D7000 series replacement in the form of a Z70 then I will surely get one.

I love my D780 but it (as of yet) has a MAJOR (IMO) bug when used with older manual focus+aperture lenses in LiveView. You either get an incorrect exposure preview or you get NO Lightmeter on screen. I have made a video on this on (only video on my "channel") as it is one of the reasons I wanted this camera. I still love it and have a workaround but it would be so great if Nikon fixed it with a firmware update.... I've brought it to their attention but if you could do a video on this issue it would surely get more attention than what I have done...

Been watching your videos for a couple weeks, but just subscribed for some reason. Recently I was looking to replace my D800 and I went and held and played with a Z6/7... didn't care for the small bodies and slide show effect above 5.5fps (I shoot birds)... So I found a banging deal on a D850 and called it a day. No regrets.

very nice video and honest! I love the DSLR ergos and I feel something is missing with the mirrorless cameras, but the extra $1000 usd makes me say "I can buy stuff to make it better and still have a cheaper price!" I have a D7500 and I believe they have the same layour and the D780 will use all the lenses I have (the FX and maybe some Dx) and not needing 2 sets of lenses it is a plus ! Thanks for your videos, they are funny and informative!

I love my D780. Perfect "in-between" camera' as you said, a gateway to mirrorless. Great low-light performance; I paired it with my F Mount 105mm f1.4 portrait lens to get nice shots of comet Neowise last year. It's great for night shots, timelapses, natural light portraits and the like. Thanks for giving this amazing little camera some love, Omar - it's an underrated gem.

Is Omar correct that you can't set the flat profile for video when you change over - seems strange - I can on my D750.

@@markshirley01 Not to quarrel with Omar (he has far more experience than I), but I'm looking at my Movie menu on the D780 right now, and if you scroll down and select "Set Picture Control", there is A) a setting that says "Same as photo settings; and B) there is a Flat (and all the other pic controls) available in the Movie section. Before you buy, ask the sales agent; but as far as I can see, it looks like you can select Flat for movie. To be honest tho, if you're looking to purchase for video purposes, you might want to consider the Z5. There's a significant crop, but the image stabilization on the mirrorless units means no gimbal. If you splurge and get the Z6ii, you get great video without nasty crop and you also get IBIS. If you're serious about video, consider the Z6 or Z6ii

It's great. Nikon shafted its DSLR users by not making an adapter that works with D lenses on the Z system, but they made a really expensive camera that has some Z features. Very logical.

@@jd5787 Doesn't have AF on D ... so you have aperture control, but no focus... and they don't even bother about making an adapter... so I sold my Z cameras. Don't care for plastic use'em and loose'm lenses and don't care for companies that would make a 5 grand techno miracle and not even bother making a simple adapter... I have a whole set of D lenses that I don't plan on selling.

And I don't see why I would have to sell a whole bunch of excellent lenses to get something that's three times the price and only a couple of percentage points better in performance... at the time when I also have a fuji dslr with lenses that are much cheaper, made of quality materials and also give superb performance and more natural skin tones... ... so I don't see the upside.

Thanks for sharing Omar.,.. great video & comments....I only have D500 & thinking of buying D780 although I am happy with the D500, I am keen to move to full frame....I am only a hobbyist but love taking pics of whatever interests me.... otherwise I perhaps should spend the money on better glass....I am not really interested in upgrading to mirrorless gear at this point.... cheers from Australia 😀

I rented this and the Z6II. To my alarm, the Z6II had worse autofocus. The Z series autofocus would hunt, and backfocus all the time. No such issues with the D780

This is not in the marketing for Nikon mirrorless... Z series are great in certain lighting conditions, I own a Z6 and love using it. BUT!! I do not trust it in portrait sessions when I NEED to nail focus every time, under sub optimal ambient lighting conditions. Every time, I will get a missed focus every 5 or so shots... this is unacceptable. My D750 nails focus every time (however these is an alignment issue between the visual autofocus point in the viewfinder and where it actually is in the focus mechanism.... but that's a different story) Good to hear the DSLR 780 still performs great!! I think it will be my next camera when time comes to get new camera.... having best aspects of dslr and mirrorless in one body is great. Nikon stuffs it up again though by removing ability to attach a functioning vertical grip, in an era where we all shoot to display imagery in vertical orientation, classic Nikon!! I'll send them my physio bill when my elbow and shoulder finally give up.

The main issue though is you still have one of the big disadvantages of mirrorless, the reduced usable dynamic range from the banding. This is because there are phase sensors on the inage sensor. My D750 has wayyyy more useable dynamic range than my Z6, despite the 750 not being BSI.

Shame that Pentax had to discontinue the K-P. A DSLR with an OVF, the size of a mirrorless with IBIS and weather sealing. Albeit not full frame, but still a great camera for casual shooters. Had an opportunity to buy one a while back before it was discontinued, but didn’t go for it. Really wish I had

Great post. And there I thought I'm the only person on the planet that changed from Canon to Nikon. My reason was simply that the Canon support in SA is just a little less than non-existing. The other reason that became more evident later is that Nikon's ergonomics is simply unmatched by ANY other brand making them a pleasure to use. Back to your post. So I was robbed from my Camera backpack on the very last day of 2021 when I was suppose to do our year end celebration shoot. The only thing I have left is a nifty little 35mm f1.8 lens and 3 flashes. Starting from scratch the first thing I was thinking was should I go mirrorless? Now, every single mirrorless body I held till date felt like I just can't get a grip on them. And no my hands are not that big. My other dilemma is that (giving away my age here) I started off with film and I am addicted to the nostalgy of looking through a OVF. Plus it looks much more professional. Lol. The next dilemma is that I know eventually, if not already, no more effort will be put into new tech for DSLR's. What is the solution I wonder.... Stay tuned.

It is basically the same (a tad better in the mirrorless because they have a more precise AF, and more recent hardware). Mirrorless just make it easier to get the shot you want.

Hi Omar. Like your self, I enjoy different camera brands. I’m invested in Canon and Sony. They have their own characteristics which I enjoy. Recently I tried a Nikon D800 with some good glass. Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 and the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 for a very reasonable price. The results have been outstanding. The photos are easy to edit with pleasing skin tones. I have my eyes on the Z6 ii. Nikon has my attention. I enjoy your relatable content, keep up the good work.

I enjoyed this video. I like your down to earth approach. I currently use a D850 and a Z6, both are great. The 850 is spectacular for stills. Nothing touches it. The Z6 is good for videos. Nothing beats a DSLR for handling. Thanks again , great video.

Used to be a Nikon Shooter until 2017 before switching to Sony & Fujifilm, my last was D750 & D800E, used them to their end, but what a beautiful experience and lately, Mirrorless while evolving has made me feel somewhat lacking. Wanting to switching back Nikon for colors, and was confused between Z5 & D780 as they're similarly priced now in my country. This video made on thing clear, DSLR aren't dead, especially with its Live View function while having the OVF for much of the work. Only think that is a con personally for me is the weight & IBIS otherwise, it's a solid camera with more options in used market for lens than Z lens, and adapting Nikon isn't as smooth or good as Canon has done with their system. Highly considering having D780 for couple of years, wait for a Used Z8 to hit the market or something, and grab that while having F lenses to adapt & Z to upgrade.

Hey Omar, have you shot with the z6 and zii at a job together? This is what I have been using for a few months together and notice how much different the colors can be, especially the white balance. Have you notice this? If so, how do you go about matching them?

Hi Omar, there’s a very low mileage 780 that I’m looking at and if the price is right might get added to my kit. The last DSLR that I used extensively was the D300S before switching to the Z. Somehow, the OVF is still important to me besides the battery performance, but the Z body’s IBIS and more precise AF is hard to ignore

Hi Omar. I have a very important question for you. I currently own a d850 and a Z6ii. I love both cameras but am considering selling the d850 for a d780. The reason is because I want a second camera that can do both video and photo and I have 2 Nikkor AF-D lenses that I will NEVER part with. (105 f2 dc / 180 f2.8d) so the question: I know that the d850’s focus system for photo is much better that the d780 (which I will have to be ok with), but is the d780’s focusing for video comparable to the z6ii? My concern is that it will not be as good as the z6ii for video autofocus (mainly eye-af) using AF-S lenses. PLEASE advise! I am desperate for a solid answer to this!!!

DSLR are not dead, they are like vinyl. Afters shooting mostly Fuji the last couple of years (x-t20 & x-t3) i recently started using my Nikon D7200 again: Love the OFV and love the AF even more. Will never sell it!

I cannot afford to buy the latest and greatest, so I am always several years behind the front runners when it comes to gear... but that works just fine for me. My main cameras are a Nikon D700, Fujifilm XT1 and FujifilmXT2, each works beautifully, each has its purpose. I use the LiveView on the D700 for astrophotography, mounted on a 72mm widefield telescope and a GOTO mount, and it works great. The D780 will probably be my next purchase, although I can't stand the idea of selling the D700 with its amazing colors. Gracias por este excelente video.

I now own it glad I waited was planning on getting the d750, totally love this camera both photo and video excellent performance. If ones main work is video get a mirrorless, for the best of both worlds you can't beat this baby especially if you were already shooting Nikon dslr.

I have a full Fuji system and EOS R, and for serious jobs, I still reach for my D850 most frequently. Nikon, you need to make a Z8!!! D850 body, mostly Z9 innards.

Gonna happen sooner or later (I think rather sooner, as in 2022). Nikon launches/updates 2-3 bodies every year. Just because they launched the z9 doesn't mean they will stop launching other bodies... Once the z6/7 get their III updates and a z8 launches - in whatever sequence and times frame, whatever specs - less and less peeps will want another dSLR. I'm waiting patiently. I knew my z7 first gen wouldn't be the perfect camera for me, but rather than going d850 I went z7. Gives me time to build up my lens setup. And yes, I love the Z's, surprised how good they are (totally underrated, in particular since last AF update), love the smaller size (goes often cycling with me). They make great second-hands IMO!

If one can afford a new camera, there is no reason you cannot enjoy both DSLR and mirrorless by buying used. I shoot both Pentax and Fuji. I love both systems and film and shoot horses for courses and obviously there is some crossover usage where I just choose according to mood. I prefer my FF Pentax for still life and landscape using older MF lenses. Prefer my Fuji's for anything I want AF for. I prefer my Pentax cameras if I know I want to shoot colour and Fujis if I want to shoot B&W. I prefer composing through an optical viewfinder over a EVF, but to be honest I do not find the difference that great. I find it easier to use manual flash with the Pentax's. I prefer my Fuji's for discreet carrying for street use. My K1 is built like tank, beautifully engineered and a joy to use, as long as you do not mind primitive AF or use MF, but it is big, heavy and shouts "here is a photographer!" I could go on. There is no reason to restrict yourself to one system or another unless your budget is severely limited.

I’m same as you Richard. I still prefer the big OVF of my Pentax K-1 although after using my new Fuji a lot over recent months I get the benefit of having the histogram in the EVF and focus peaking in the EVF for manual focus lens. But other than that the immediacy and clarity of the K-1 DSLR viewfinder is nicer to frame shots. The only other EVF I’d used was an Olympus E-M10 which I’ve had for 5 years and the EVF was an eternal disappointment. I thought it was just because it’s lower resolution EVF than newer cameras but now I know with my 2021 Fuji that’s not it. Putting an electronic image of the scene in front of you is a less helpful way of connecting with your subject.

@@shred3005 If you want to experience the true joy of an optical viewfinder, the old film SLRs like the OM1, MX etc are even better on the viewfinder front. Just every thing else is a little less convenient.

@@richardhale9664 I’ve also got an MX and that’s probably the best optical viewfinder I’ve ever looked through. I give the analogy that while many DSLR viewfinder since the 2000s are like looking out of the end a tunnel, the MX is like standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon with your toes hanging over edge looking out on the vast scene in all of its magnificence.

im coming from d750,i just have 2 lenses 2470 and 50.. and i want something faster than my d750 on autofocus, have same dynamic range or even better.. mainly i use it for wedding and studio .. should i go for d780 or z6ii ? whats your recommendation ?

If you do any low light shooting with moving targets such as sports the Z line just doesn't track or auto focus very well and suffers from EV blackout when doing FPS shooting. This D780 may be able to handle that task and also give you some of the advantages of the Z cameras. I tried the Z's and just couldn't get them to do the job so stayed with my D6. I have a Z9 on order so perhaps that will fit the bill.

I agree with conclusions. I bought a used D810 two years ago. I'm still uneasy with the use of a lens adapter for the Z cameras. It is hard to resist the low prices on used F lenses.

I had that same feeling with SL3. It is stripped from many of SLR features and mostly focused on those mirorless improvements. This is probably how it's going to be from now on even if they release any new dslr. I think that Canon made their last DSLR but Nikon could have couple of them in the pipeline. Probably Nikon d880 and Nikon d7800 just because of that screw drive lenses and their af in mirorless isn't that tight jet. But we'll see.

I think they will probably come up with something like a z8 quite soon. Maybe a 3rd line of z6 or z7 - but I personally would not think so ( They need to implement quite a bit better AF almost like the z9 has though ! ). That said I am convinced they have some DSLR up their sleeves but perhaps they will go either only one way - could be another DX sports and wildlife Camera like d500, only with at least as better AF, and all the features the D780 has. That would be sold in quite some margins I guess . They could also go a split way - something like their last great FX DSLR body ever and a DX body as well !

I have a D810. I bought it after owning a Canon 5DMKIII. A whole new world was opened to me. My problem with jumping to mirrorless is....I own a D810! The D750, 810, 780 & 850 - all contain INSANE levels of dynamic range. Top of the line in ISO invariance. I have come to rely on it and have tried a TON of mirrorless in trying to find a 'hybrid' as I also shoot video (Nikon sucks at video, even the Z series - I wish they didn't, but they do), but I have yet to find any mirrorless in any brand (the highest end $5000+ camera aside) that comes close.

electronic shutter vs mechanical shutter too. Shooting with a silent mode on a Mirrorless is amazing when shooting things like church events or your kids play or things like that.

The only flaw for me with the D780 is the lack of an additional battery grip under the camera. I need those grips on every camera I own... I try it during almost a full week, it produces very great images, almost the same as the Z6.

Yep, this is one of the reasons I bailed on Nikon, they stopped supporting vertical grips on cameras that absolutely needed them. Silver lining is I escaped before they started screwing up their APS-C lineup as full frame is worthless for concerts, thankfully we still have Fujifilm around for professional concert cameras.
