If I was forced to sell or choose just one of these cameras… I would regretfully sell the D750 as I use the D850 more in the type of photography I do nowadays. But I count myself very lucky to own both cameras and don’t have to sell either 🤙 I should also mention the Nikon D850 has focus peaking in live view and the ability to do focus stacking. I couldn’t cover every single little difference between the two cameras in this video or it would have went for hours. I’ve always said if your current camera is doing the job you need it to do, then realistically you don’t have to upgrade or buy a new one. If it’s broken and beyond the cost of repair, that’s another story 👍📸

I still have my D750, the only person I have given it to is my 11 year old grandson who loves it & every time he uses it can't believe what it can do, so I would say your right I did buy the D850 as an upgrade but the 750 still works great & I will also give my D850 to my grandson too!!!!!

I bought the D750 when it first came out and just cannot part with it, even after I got the Z7. Thinking of purchasing the Z8 but I'll still keep the 750. It's like an old friend to me. When I finally retire it, I'll put it on the shelf with the rest of my collection of vintage cameras.

Good Evening, Adrian! Great video, Good Sir! I began with a D7000, then bought a D7100, D700, and a D4S. In truth, I like them all! But, after I got my first D750, brand new, it was love at first photos! I do not care about shooting videos, and don't care about focus-stacking. I treat my D750 like my old 35mm film cameras, and that works for me! Not long ago, I purchased a second D750, also new, from Adorama. Now, when I travel, I take both D750's, and my Nikon Trilogy lenses: 14-24G, 24-70G, and 70-200E, all Nikon f2.8 lenses, and I'm thrilled with the photos I'm getting! I'm ready to add one more lens, and it will more than likely be the Nikon 500mm f5.6E PF. For the photos I take, I have no need to upgrade to the D850, and have, quite honestly, NO interest in going Mirrorless! Why fix what is not broken? I do not thing that Mirrorless will give me anything better than what I am currently getting, and most certainly am thrilled with my current lens family. I do have a Nikon 50mm f1.8G, too, but unless I really need something like that, I seldom use it. Just my 'tuppence, and others may, of course, choose something different! Thanks, again, for the great videos, and God Bless! - Doc

Good Evening, Adrian! The D850 is the finest DSLR ever made by Nikon to add the vertical grip increase in fps to 9 frames a second and also big file size for heavy crop etc. but D750 Joy uses Great Excellent image quality + Outstanding dynamic range at low ISOs. Excellent high ISO performance. Good buffer depths when shooting JPEGs. New highlight-weighted metering mode. Good performance from the built-in flash.

Outstanding results at 6400 ISO and zoomed into 2l00%!!! Wow! Hello, I use the z9 every day. But I also use my D850 at least twice a week. They are both fabulous cameras and although my Z9 is easier to do a lot of things with, (new tech!) I find the D850 delivers everything else I need. You are write, noise is no longer the killer it was and I find some noise adds to the photo, making some images even more dramatic. I also have many top line FX lenses, they are not being replaced unless they fail. The average eye cannot see any difference in their performance, just as with the cameras. Great channel thank you! What a coincidence, I own a D750 for years now and because I’m planning on a upcoming wildlife safari I bought a used D850 yesterday, 15k clicks, no damage, battery grip and 2 battery’s for 1725€ 🤩 Planning on using the 14-24 2.8 on the D750 for landscapes and the 80-400 4-5.6 on the D850 for cropping possibilities with wildlife shots. I love DSLR, the feeling of holding a proper camera, the look through the optical viewfinder directly through the lens. And the ability to repair instead of replace.

I did myself a side by side comparison not long ago, and my findings matches yours. Initially i thought that the D850 was my upgrade coming from the D750, but that is not so much the case, excluding some specific and niche scenarios. One thing i always disliked of my D750 was the cold output in terms of temperature compared to other camera´s. Recently after some years of owning the D750 i managed to set the camera in a way that i don´t get that bluish cold tint and instead i get a warmer output right from the camera which matches more my personal taste. This last was a common problem for a lot of people but as usual is just a matter of settings, just my 2 cents anyway and yes ! Never Stop Creating.

I only own DSLR's(D700, D7100 and D850), but I do think that there is no denying that mirrorless is the future. Is the DLSR dead, well in some ways yes, there won't be more lenses, and there won't be more cameras so in that regard it is truly dead. But even though that is IMHO a fact, the camera itself ain't dead. Sure you can't do eye tracking of a bird or people with the same accuracy as a mirrorless but the quality of the technical part of the pictures are still on par with mirrorless. People have for many, MANY years managed to take great pictures without any eye tracking - which in my mind is the biggest + for mirrorless. Mirrorless may make it easier to catch a great shot, but only if you know what you are doing in regards to composition etc. Those who know how to use an old DSLR will still take good pictures and even a Nikon d700 is a great camera today IMHO.

I am hobbyist photographer and been using the Nikon APSC cameras for last 11 years, started with the D7000, upgraded to the D7200 and then moved to the z50 with both kit lenses about 3 years ago. I do most of my photography while traveling, family events and chasing the grandkids (birthday parties, sports, etc). I am 70 years old and found myself struggling with a heavy D7200 and all the f lenses. The Z50 is a great travel camera. I will never go back to DSLR.

I have a D750 and a D800E, I bought both brand new when they came out, sometimes I think on selling both to buy a second-hand D850, then I watch videos like this and forget about it because I remember how great the D750 is and if I still need a backup body or more megapixels the D800E is still awesome with good light, I don't plan on switching to mirrorless as I have a big investment on F-mount lenses, so I rather have the D750 and D800E than a single D850

This is a very informative video, well explained and very well considered. I use a D7000, D600, D750 and D800 depending on what I am photographing. I have considered part exchanging a couple of cameras towards a D850 but have resisted the temptation. Perhaps I have done the right thing. I rarely shoot above ISO 1000 and I rarely print over 18" x 12", so I doubt the D850 would offer many advantages. It's comforting to hear this from a knowledgeable photographer like yourself and yes I agree, a photographer's technique and skill is often more important than the technical specification of a camera

I just traded some older gear and kit lenses straight up for a D750 w/24-120 lens on the second hand market. It's a great time to grab this incredible DSLR gear for crazy low prices. Great landscape lenses such as the Nikon 16-35 f4, Tamron 17-35 2.8-4 etc are going for around $300. This opportunity won't last forever so I'm picking up enough of these bargains to set me up for the next 10 years of photography.

For my activities the DSLR is still alive and well. I use a D7500 for my general purpose camera setup. 20.9 MP would seem to be enough resolution for an image and the files aren’t too big. Also the APS-C lenses are a lot cheaper to buy. I appreciate the advantages of mirrorless systems and they are the future but because I can create some amazing photos on my DSLR, I won’t be getting rid of mine until it dies. Cheers

I sold most of my F-mount gear because I wasn’t using it anymore. It was tough to do. I didn’t want to but I just had too much stuff. It wasn’t because of image quality. It was about usage. Mirrorless is still overpriced. The benefits depend on what you are doing. You can’t tell the mirrorless from the DSLR images in my catalog but I do find I like some of the advantages I get shooting with a mirrorless camera. It made no sense to keep 4 camera bodies. One set of gear needed to go. If your priorities change, it’s time to rethink.

Both are great, I own both, if money isn't an issue just buy the D850 and be happy. In my opinion the D850 is the finest DSLR ever made. Add the vertical grip and use the larger ENEL18 battery and you get a battery that seems to last forever and an increase in fps to 9 frames a second. If money is tight the D750 is excellent and 7fps isn't shabby either. 😊

The D750 was my first FF and I still measure cameras I have purchased since against the D750, that DR or shadow recovery when you slide the shadow slider always blew me away. I think if anyone is asking the question which one? the D750 will be a huge advancment over what they probably have, great buy at todays prices. Currently with the 850 it took a while for me to really appeciate it, but now wow I love it. I commented after an earlier video that I have two D750s. I've since bought a Z6ii. So far I barely use the new camera. In time maybe I'll adjust to it but so far the quirks of mirrorless are an issue for me. I haven't adjusted to the EV and much prefer seeing the real world in the viewfinder. The smaller size isn't as comfortable for me. Using the F to Z adapter seems to cause some vignetting with some lenses (easily correctable). Not all my F mount lenses will autofocus with the adapter. Battery life is never an issue with the D750s but, as I understand it, it's an issue with all mirrorless cameras. The one feature I do like on the Z6ii is that it's silent but it's mainly if I'm shooting in museums and galleries that I find this an advantage. We can adjust to almost anything in time and I may become a convert but at the moment if I saw a good deal on either a D750 or D850 I'd buy it and try to postpone the day when I'm forced to go mirrorless.

DSLR not dead yet ! Battery life with standard or better still the battery grip with larger battery is very good. Always loved the fact you are looking through the lens, with its definition, colour rendition etc More chunky, but that can be a good thing with balancing long lenses on a gimbal, or getting steady hand held shots. The D850 is excellent for cropping in bird photography. Today there is a great value 2nd hand market for D850, D750, D500 etc and lots of quality F mount lenses and even older ais made in Japan lenses too.

Appreciate that you've gotten around to this, Adrian. Thanks for the straight-forward, unbiased comments. I don't have mirrorless as yet, but instead use numerous Nikon DSLRs dating back to the D200 & including both the D700 & D750. Something that you didn't touch upon is the produced file sizes from the D750 vs the D850. I don't have the 850, but have heard from other sources that its larger files might be a bit more cumbersome to work with on less up-to-date computer systems; any comment(s) about this?

Very good and useful video -- but did you mention the D780 at all ? Maybe that would be another great camera to choose when not wanting to handle the bigger files of the D850 and not needing it`s better AF System.

I agree with your assessment, I too believe the D850 is a fabulous camera DSLR or Mirrorless it is top notch. The only cameras within the Nikon sphere which can better it are the Z9 and Z8 but only in fast focus acquisition. The D850 and D750 image quality is stellar to this day. I moved over to Sony a few years back only to capture birds in flight. The tradeoff is decreased battery life, smaller less ergonomic body for faster focus acquisition. Is the image quality any better? Not if printing letter size. Yes in low-light situations, the Sony is better due to more capabilities at higher ISO. In reality and for anyone wanting to capture landscapes, portraits, astrophotography, there is absolutely no need to go mirrorless. In fact if Nikon chose to upgrade the D850 focus acquisition and improve higher ISO many serious amateurs, and professionals would be quite happy to continue shooting DSLR's.

Adrian, really enjoyed this video. You bring up some truly important points, you can have the latest Hasselblad with a 100 mp sensor and still take crappy photos. It is all about the skill and technique of the shooter that could make a photo a truly great shot. As far as these cameras go, when I purchased my D850 the other choice was the D750. I got the D850 only because I was able at the time to afford it. As you prove in your test, I would have been just as happy with the D750 as I am with the D850. All that said, if you ae going to be cropping as I do with bird photography then go for the D850. I could go on and on... Anyway, thank you again for a great video.

I’ve used both and now I only own a D850 which is one of the best cameras available. For me it’s the 850 over 750 because of the dynamic range. But the 750 is an outstanding camera, lighter, smaller and almost as good as the 850. Two legendary Nikons.

I am a serious amateur photographer and Nikon guy on a budget and bought my D750 second hand and damaged from eBay at a good price. I had it repaired, and it is am awesome camera I have used hard. The only limit I found was it's small buffer, but I have used it's amazing dynamic range by shotting in RAW and then changing the exposure settings. My D750 is again slightly injured and I want to get into mirrorless, but I'm not dumping the D750. Another repair and refresh, and I've always wanted a D850. The Z6III seems like it will be punching well above its weight when it is release... but would love a Z9. No point in getting the Z8 - I want a grip on all my cameras, and the Z9's build on grip is just a better package than a Z8 with a grip.

Thèse 2 caméras are great but for my usage (mainly landscape) I still keep my d810 which is sufficient for me. If I needed to upgrade to 45mpix sensor now, the z8 would be a dream … but not in my budget, so a z7 second hand at 1500€ would probably be my choice. The d850 is the best reflex ever made (sorry canon) but I become old and my back wants something lighter now. The mirrorless gets the advantage of the weight and giving the final exposition on the view finder and the view finders of Nikon body are very good now. The optical viewfinder is no more an advantage for me.

I wholeheartedly agree that the person behind the camera, their technical skill level and compositional artistry are more important than the camera equipment. Having said that, I owned two D750 and a D850 but currently own a Z8 and Z9. My use case is significantly shooting movement shots and I find that the Z8 and Z9 are a joy to use, and even dialing them down to 15fps affords a significantly better hit rate of focus and capturing that magic movement moment I'm after. It I was shooting landscapes and or portraits, then I might still have the D850, While I thought very highly of the D750's, I sold one of them to purchase the D850 and then the second to buy a Z711. Once I went to 46MP, I was hooked on the better resolution of the D850, Z7ii, Z8 and Z9. But I do try to practice constantly to improve my technical skill and composition knowledge and feel., And, the Z lenses are a significant step up in resolution and sharpness from their F-mount counterparts.

I walked into my local Camera store, here in Montreal Quebec and asked to see the Z8. I just wanted to assess the image quality and AF system because I am getting a little older and my eyes are not quite as good as they once were... Although I was very impressed with the AF system, especially in Video mode compared to my D850 the reality is that the Image quality is exactly the same! I took several images with my existing Tamron 85 1.8 lens (DXMark rated sharpness higher than Zeiss Milvus just in case anyone whines about Tamron lenses) and I saw absolutely zero difference in Image quality. That being said, I am aware that the newer Nikkor lenses are rated even better and would pair better with the Z lineup but at this moment, before my eyesight gets too bad, I'll stick to my D850 and Full lineup of lenses. Maybe one day if I win the lottery and have tons of cash to throw away or I begin shooting high speed sporting events. Great video by the way.

I'm so happy you did this thorough test as an owner of both models. Just like to report back that I could perfectly see the difference at ISO 6400 between the two cameras but as you say with today de-noise software it's easy to fix. Frankly I got the feeling that I went too far by "upgrading" from the D750 about 2 years ago given my level of photography but I did it because I wanted to have perfect pictures of my new born daughter. What I'm starting to realize more and more recently is the fact that getting eyes - always - sharp is challenging now that she's starting to zoom around and - shame on me - I had a closer look at the Z8. But based on reviews it seems that the eye tracking has some issues compared to the main competitors at that level and I leave it there for the time being. What's your take on my "problem"?

Thanks for watching. I found the eye detect on my “older” Z7 mirrorless running latest firmware update to be pretty good. Not as good as Sony or Canon. After I upgraded from a D7100 to a D750, I thought to myself, no way I'm going even bigger/heavier than this. In fact I was considering getting a 24-85/3.5-4.5 because of the weight savings compared to my 24-120. I have a 70-300 as well, so I don't really need that additional 85-120mm range. However, I recently went to Costa Rica with the D750 and the Tamron 100-400/4.5-6.3. That's a heavier lens than the aforementioned 70-300. But even at 400mm, I needed to sometimes crop in to get the final composition. With 24MP, you have some latitude, but not as much as with 45MP. However, I also have another thought. In Costa Rica, sometimes I was out with just the D750 and 100-400. If I then wanted to grab a wider shot, I had to use my phone. That is an iPhone 15 Pro, which is not bad, but it's just not the same, operationally and in terms of workflow, as a DSLR. So I was thinking at one point, to get a D7500 and use that with my 100-400 for wildlife, and use the D750 with either the 18-35 or 24-120 for wider shots. Or, maybe I could even get a Nikon 1 J5 used. But that doesn't have a viewfinder, and I'm not sure how well it would work with wildlife. Another consideration, however, is that mirrorless cameras with eye AF would probably yield me more keepers. I used 3D tracking on my D750 most of the time, but only with some of the wildlife shots was it focused where I wanted it to be.

I have the D750 and for me, one advantage of the D750 over the D850, is the weight. For travel photography, my neck and back really notice the extra weight at the end of the day. I noticed this using my D700 which is even slightly heavier (ca. 60g) than the D850.

For buying a DSLR I think it boils down to one question: Are you already invested in the system? If yes then depending on how deep your investment is or what you need I would say it makes sense to buy one of the two in 2024. If you start out however then im not sure because maybe you will want eye tracking, silent shooting or what ever at some point down the road but then you will be already invested in a dead system. High quality stuff is now getting cheaper on the DSLR side but im not sure if adapting t makes to much sense and Switching camera Systems and covering all your previous lenses might get costly! Will one see the differenc? Maybe if you shoot a mirror image of your self... but honestly i doubt anyone cares if an image is taken with a point and shoot or a Fuji X100II anyways. What really matters is to reliably get the results you are looking for. Mine got better when i went from Pentax to Sony FE but it had alot to do with doing postprocessing and reviewing all of my images in a timely manner boosting my learning curve. Btw. I would pick the D750 for its smaller files :D

To answer your last question, no the DSLR is not dead. Otherwise, I would not have bought my D750 to compliment my D7200. As for the Yoda side-by-side comparison, I do notice that the green looks better in the D850 image and the highlights seem to be better controlled. This might be because of its 45MP BSI sensor as against the D750's CMOS sensor. But...I'm NEVER trading, selling or giving away my D750; love it too much!

I shoot with the D750. To answer your question, the DSLR is dead if the manufacturers are not going to produce them anymore. And that seems to be the market trajectory at this time. I might ask the question, "Do you still shoot with film?" Mirrorless has some advantages, particularly for video. I've toyed with the idea of buying the Nikon Zf, or the Z6II, or Z6III. Unfortunately, my skill level does not justify the need or expense of aquiring more equipment. I've made the same point many times that you made at the conclusion of your video - the photographer takes the photo, not the camera.

The DSLR isn’t dead for the consumer as there will be tons of used items to pick from at reasonable prices. DSLR are at great prices right now. From a manufacturing and business prospective from these companies, it is dead because there won’t be any innovation. In about the next 10 years parts will become difficult to find and the brands will start telling you they can’t fix due to part shortages as they start to retool for Mirrorless going forward, but with the current financial situation in the world the DSLR might be a great solution in terms of getting great glass real cheap. You are correct skill first, camera second and for goodness sake we need to stop hyping megapixels. Some people are still shooting on D610, D700, D750, D4, D5 and D6 in the 12-24 megapixel range and producing fantastic images.
