I've had mine roughly 8 mths now upgrading from the D7100. I was originally looking at the D750 but found out about this. I am totally pleased with it, I primarily shoot weddings, some other events and portraits. I also shot short videos at times. I couldn't have made a better choice It's the best of both worlds., dslr and mirrorless. Not to mention it uses all Nikon lenses no matter how old.

I never really understood why the D750 was prices so high on the used market, considering it's last retail price was pretty low. Yes for users who will use live view/video/silent shooting it has quite a bit to offer

The live view allows the photographer to be less obtrusive when photographing toddlers playing. Got some great shots of my grandson playing with my wife. Also love the color rendition, this is a great sensor

The silent shooting is very useful in some situations, sensor is a solid performer, excellent in low light. Thanks for the thoughts

I love this camera, best one i've had - do a lot of hiking with it, and in bad weather also, camera is a bit heavy....also thumb grip came off after only a year but managed to glue it back on and it's been alright since. I also got condensation inside the lens and had to send it away to be repaired. Also the viewfinder tends to mist up when it gets wet and it;'s hard to see what i'm taking but apart from all that, excellent picture quality, very sharp images.

I still like it, and use it together with the D800 (they have their own set of pros and cons). Nikon's ongoing rubber issues are not over yet! But I didn't have the thumbpad come off (yet) just the side rubber. It's a shame Nikon don't give it more support and push, for those who do want a DSLR it's quite capable.

I bought my camera for $1k, for that price I'm willing to put up with some flaws and compromises. And yes, the advantages of the camera are correctly noted, a fairly modern sensor on which you can hang many different optics gives great flexibility. Personally, I would like to have a matrix stabilizer. However, the sensor, optical viewfinder and long battery life outweigh the minor disadvantages. For comparison, I have a sony a7c with a similar sensor, it is super compact, but the batteries discharge very quickly.

You got a good price on that one. I try to show the good/weaker points, it's mostly good here but Nikon did hold back a bit, and the grip removal whilst it doesn't bother me so much (I don't use grips often once in a while on the D800 I have), was dumb. I didn't expect it to have sensor based IS, but they could have done it. Just Canikon never did on any DSLR cameras. I have a 2005 DSLR that has it (KM5D), and both makers could have done this too. I also prefer to use an optical finder myself

Well done on the review Mr Baz... definitely learned some new things about the 780 here and good points on what it does well (as well as it's weaknesses) in general. No doubt that you get a lot more for your money going with the F mount/DSLR's in general. Can't see any reason as a stills shooter to go all in on mirrorless- rather crazy if you ask me!

No point pulling punches good and bad as such. Lenses is the problem so many good deals and vast third party options that just are not there on mirrorless!

The D780 is a specialty camera (designed for video first) that's why the buttons are different. The D780, D810a, and DF are all specialty models from Nikon.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 4 ай бұрын
I can't really agree on that because Nikon have a history of moving buttons around on their cameras (and still do it today) I wouldn't say it's designed primarily as a video camera, because it's a DSLR for starters. The ISO button for example it took Nikon years to work out where to put it (it was pretty obvious for some time)

Great video, when you say you bought a "new one" due to the grip falling off, do you mean a new grip or new camera? If so was it better? Mine is falling off too, how did you resolve this?

New rubber! In the UK it's Fixation who deal with spare parts (about £15 I think for this one) Other places should have Nikon parts for sale. It is annoying, not the best design - I did try to glue it, but the rubber stretches and it's not a great result.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and comments....I am still using a D500 so I am not sure if I should upgrade to the D780 even though the D780 is full frame.... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊

Largely depends if you are going to use the video or live view abilities. That's my take For photography, there are cheaper ways to get full frame - certainly on the used market. But it varies depending on the type of photos you take. D850 is really similar to the D500 aka AF system, but has the contrast AF live view and it's more costly. At this stage I'm not sure I'd be investing in new bodies with Nikon's flaky attitude to DSLR users. I'd look for a good used one or maybe a grey market. D800/D810 offer value and are still very capable cameras

I plan to use my D780 for bird photography, with a long lens. Which focusing mode do you feel works best with the viewfinder? Is Live View, with the mirrorless technology, a better answer? Finally, do ou have any videos on live view focusing on the D780? My first impressions, with a Nikon 300mm "p" lens, are that the viewfinder mode works great, but I need to get better at which mode to use for best focusing. Very nice video, very helpful. I bought my camera used from B&H, but it was barely used.

I honestly find the AF to be good with the viewfinder, and more responsive than the live view AF. The live view is a lot better than previous contrast AF Nikon DSLR's, but it's not as quick and it can get confused at times (as I have demonstrated in the video). Tracking is passable in live view, but it can latch onto unintended subjects too. It is worth trying but I find the optical AF faster. For AF modes on moving subjects I would use group (for larger subjects), or single point. 3D tracking can work well too if the subject is distinctive from the background. I might do a video on AF modes later if I get a chance. Hope that helps a bit, the AF modes are straight forward enough just remember group AF is like a really big single AF point, the points is uses have no priority it will use any which locks, dynamic AF will go for the middle point first, and expand out to the others if it can't lock on. That is an important difference between them

@@MrBazReviews I started out thinking I needed "tracking" because the birds are usually moving around, and then I thought "3D tracking" was what I needed, but on my next trip, I will use the viewfinder and the 4-segment "diamond" GROUP function you wrote about. This is on medium size birds, and larger birds. I guess the single-point focus, based on what you wrote and what I think I know, will be better for small birds, and if the birds are flying, I'll try "GROUP" next time. You are the first person to ever describe GROUP so well - only now do I think I understand it - but I have yet to try it out. I would prefer to learn only one or two methods for now, get used to it, and then learn more. Thank you for writing back - I didn't expect.a response. ....and yes, a video on AF modes for the 780, even if it's limited to the viewfinder, would be extremely helpful. ...at least to me.

@@MrBazReviews Something else I hope you explain - at the beginning of my day, I set the camera to U2, as those settings sounded like a good starting point. I changed them as needed, but after several minutes shooting, my D780 on its own changed back to 200 ISO, so the next dozen photos were underexposed. I changed the ISO back, but so did the camera. My friend insisted I set the camera in "manual mode", and that nonsense stopped. If I'm right, and the camera is likely to (on its own) start changing things back to the original U2 settings, that is very important to know, and I won't do it again.

@@MikeMyers00 I did some experimenting with group v dynamic, both work for most subjects well. Group as stated puts equal weight on any of the points shown (it also uses the middle point which isn't shown just the cross outer ones), it will go for closest focus on any of those points, so whatever is nearer to you it will focus on that in that cluster. People I know have used it for fast action like hockey, sports etc, but also some wildlife shooters. Dynamic is a bit different as I said you start it off on that single point and is uses the surrounding ones if it can't lock, or the subject moves. You can pick from 9, 21, 51. I use 9 quite a bit the other ones are for action which is very unpredictable, it will switch over to the other points, so birds I might try 21 or 51 for rapid action. For marathons I use the 9 point as it's mostly predictable. The D800 I also have doesn't have group AF, but I use dynamic on that. I was never unhappy with that mode either. Play around a bit with group/dynamic. Single point can work well it's just for movement it's hard to keep it on the subject at times.

@@MikeMyers00 U settings remember the modes too PASM, so set to which one you want. I have one I think on A with action settings for cont AF etc. I don't use it much it's just a quick fall back it needed. Sometimes I use M with auto ISO, that can be handy but you can set the shutter too high or slow and if it's outside the range it can over or underexpose.
