Here's a tip about using the DOF button. Following is an excerpt from Ken Rockwell's F100 review: "If you enjoy photographing people in public, invariably one day you will have someone pop by and ask you to photograph them just for the fun of it. If you'd prefer not to waste film on this, press and release the DOF button. It sounds exactly as if you've taken their picture." I love your reviews Mike =]

liked the thoroughness describing the camera. I've had mine for about 20 years with no problems. Picked up a 2nd one (used) for a backup. the matrix meter does a great job on slide film, which is the least forgiving type of film.

In my experience with it, the F100 is the most usable, practical Nikon SLR. It's range of feature exceeds my willingness to learn and adapt. I like mine so much that I bought a second camera in storage for the day that my first version breaks and cannot be repaired. Over more than 55 years I acquired more than a dozen Nikons and sold or gave away three. I think at 73 Ill be selling all except the 2 F100s, a mint Nikkormat FT3, and a minty FG (for risky business). Once again, JCH Street Pan proves that it's a 160 ISO film, not a 400.

A nice review, however there are a couple of points any one buying the very nicely made camera should know. Firstly there were two model, the one in this review is the first version at around £895 appropriately new and there was a second version at around £1100 with a fixed battery box. The reason for this was that the cameras was very heavy on AA batteries and the version featured only lasted for around 4 cassettes of film! I know I bought one a few years ago s/h for about £125.

I love my F100. When I'm shooting B&W I use the spot meter and exposure for the shadows because I like high contrast B&W. If you use the averaging meter you get a middle gray which to me looks wiped out.

I love my F100 and the Matrix Meter is fantastic, especially for slide film, ie: Velvia in all of its ISO's speeds and Ektachrome. I would take this over any other 35mm automated camera and you get access to all of that fantastic Nikon glass from Fisheye all the way up virtual telescope-like long lenses. No other option at this price point can make this claim, in my opinion. Buy one, NOW!! I wish you would have tried a few shots with the Spot Meter on the F100, to see how it would have handled that stump. I really enjoyed this video, keep up the excellent work !

Whats great about the F100 is you can use all the modern lenses, to include VR. Unfortunately, Nikon used stupidly cheap plastic film back latches that are a known weakness. Recommend that anyone getting the camera monitor closely those latches and reinforce them if necessary. Otherwise, the F100 is a great camera.

Just got an F100 and my background is in much earlier 35mm SLRs, rangefinders and 120 consumer cameras (and I do have a Panasonic Lumix micro-four-thirds mirrorless). Thank you for your video -- lots of good info! Some questions -- did you use matrix metering on your shots? did you use any filters (color filters to tweak the "color" balance for BW film)? what did you use to scan your negatives (hardware/software?) and at what resolution? Thanks!!!
@themikepadua
@themikepadua 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I used Matrix metering exclusively for everything I shot with the camera. I really wanted to put it to the test. I didn’t shoot with any color filters, just the bare lens. I scanned with a Plustek 7600i (basically the same as the (8200i) and I scanned at the maximum of 7200dpi so I could squeeze out as much detail as I could from the negative.

Thanks for watching! Honestly, I have never used an F6, but from what I know of it’s features, it doesn’t offer me an advantage over an F100. I have a tendency to use one focus point and have no use for ITTL; it I ever shoot with off camera strobes I’m setting the lights manually anyway. Good luck in your search!

I’ve had two f100’s and liked them very much, but both of them had a problem with the rubber covering in that after around 5 years of use the rubber became very sticky and soft. This got bad enough that I the cameras couldn’t be used without getting the residue all over your hands and other equipment. Has anyone else had this experience, and is there a fix?
@themikepadua
@themikepadua 4 жыл бұрын
Michael Buchmeier i have heard many folks having this problem. The most common solution I’ve heard is completely removing the coating with isopropyl alcohol. I haven’t done this myself but I assume it just leaves a smooth surface since the grip material is removed.

@themikepadua
@themikepadua 5 жыл бұрын
My guess (and it's ONLY a guess based on my opinions) is that the EOS3 is approaching a very digital-like experience. Highly advanced, computer controlled, and handles like any of Canon's modern digital EOS cameras--whereas the AE-1 Program calls back to a more manual, mechanical feel and aesthetic.

@themikepadua
@themikepadua 5 жыл бұрын
@@FotosyMas. It's great but it definitely has it's pros and cons. The 7600i and the 8200i are actually the same exact hardware, just with different bundled software so you'd be getting the same scanner as me. It's biggest advantage is it's optical resolution. At max settings, 35mm frames are over 10k pixels on the long side and it resolves a TON of detail. It handles film with a really bad curl very well. It's also relatively inexpensive and can be found used for a good deal--mine was just over $100. The downsides are workflow, obviously: you have to advance each frame manually and scanning each frame takes a while. The lower resolutions are faster but it is no speed demon like the Pakon! I should also add that in terms of optics and color, it's better than ANY flatbed I've ever used.

Great review but coming from Nikon all the way to Canon, the former did a great job at producing the more iconic and best cameras in the world like the f3 and f4. The controls of the cameras after those got all clumsy and all over the place... difficult to find buttons and switches here and there!... On the other hand nothing unsurpasses the ergonomics and the position of controls in every single Canon EOS camera ever produced from film to digital, they are just at the user's fingertips!
