If you are interested in the Nikon Z cameras, such as the Z6II, Z7II or Zfc, this video will give you an overview of the core prime lenses that are available. We look at the Nikkor 35mm 1.8 S, Nikkor 50mm 1.8 S and Nikkor 85mm 1.8 S and compare their portrait uses alongside the general use case for the various lenses.
It's worth keeping in mind that these Nikon 1.8 S prime lenses are a whole different quality than the 1.8 G F mount lenses, they are higher quality, though do command a higher price tag.

Very informative video. I thoroughly enjoy shooting with the 35 it was my first lens with my z. Once I received the 85 though it’s been left on my camera since day one. I don’t know what it is I just love the output at any aperture.

Nice video. The 85mm is currently my favourite lens. Next in my line up will be the 35mm with the 105mm firmly on the wish list since its release :D

The 105 is on mine too! Hopefully later this year, would have loved to sooner but been buying too much gear as it is haha

A really good review of all three lens, I am late to the party reference S lenses and mirrorless systems as I shoot with the D5 and D6 but since December the 23rd I now have the Z9 and I am looking at either the 85mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.2 s lens as you are correct the S range of lenses are amazing - thank you for a good update.

Great info! Thank you! I’m curious if you might do a comparison of 70-200 s, 105 macro s and 85 s for portraits and bokeh? I loved your three comparison shots on this video it would be nice if they were all on the same screen to make it easier to compare👍

Thanks Karen, I’ll keep the idea of having all three photos on screen in mind future! Hadn’t considered that! I’ll probably get the 105 later this year, will compare against the 70-200 but probably not the 85 to be honest as I don’t plan to rent it again at the moment

Nice video. Your shots from 1:52 illustrate why I never bought into zoom lenses. I only shoot stills, btw. Using primes taught me to know what perspective comes from what position and angle of view. I do not want to loose that instinct, or cognitive ability. How the foreground/subject relates to the background. What Depth of Field means, between aperture and focal length. If you shoot movies and have a zoom, then by all means browse the web for "Vertigo shot" Or "dolly shot" and look at footage that does that. (Here, Vertigo references the name of the movie, not the concept.) I have the 20 and 24 too, recently acquired the MC 105/2.8S - wow. (I shoot the Z 7ii.) If you didn't, then by all means try to raw process your shots in Nikon NX Studio and look at what the difference is, at default settings.

The Z MC 105mm has VR, aka IBIS. Also agree with another poster: this is a very helpful video.

Hi I’m completely new to these forms of cameras or basically anything more complex than a Nikon coolpix s3000 and I just wanted to say your videos have really helped me with learning more about this sort of stuff, I was also just wandering if a Nikon D80 would be a good option considering I’m still new to all of this and I’m on quite a tight budget Thanks 😊

Hey! Thanks so much! I’m really glad you’re finding them useful! A D80 is a fine starter camera, I’d consider a D300 if you can and maybe get an 18-70 AF-S lens 🙂 but the D80 is a good starting point! Good luck and happy shooting!

Great video! If you had to choose between the 85 1.8 and the new macro 105 2.8 for portraits, would you have a preference?

I'd probably get the 105 if you think you might undertake macro at all as the 85 isn't great for macro

Dogs, outdoor? Really I'd want a 70-200 2.8, so maybe go for the 85 1.8S but even an older used 70-200 2.8 on an FTZ would probably be a better choice than a fixed 85 as it gives so much more flexibility.
