After 13k+ pictures taken, I loooove my Z fc. I actually got a fuji first, but am selling it. I did like the film simulation of the Fuji, but I can do that in post. The JPEGs straight from the Z fc look great, anyway. The objection to the PASM switch that a lot of people have is puzzling to me. My Minolta X-700 had a very similar selector back in the day, and I don't find it confusing. Neither did I find the Fuji system confusing. Either is fine. But to be fair, I just put the PASM switch on M and have never moved it since, and probably never will, so that simplifies things. What really seals the deal for the Z fc over Fuji for me is the lenses. The APS-C Z lenses are great, but so are the FX Z lenses. The 24-200 on the Z fc equals 35-300mm on full-frame, and covers 99% of the focal lengths I ever use in a single lens. Fuji does not have this option. Add the fact that with the FTZ, you can use any F-mount lens (that has its own motor if you want autofocus), and the various aftermarket options, and it's an embarrassment of riches... but that 24-200 and the Z fc make a completely reasonably kit for almost any situation, all by themselves. Also, I've tested output of the Z fc side by side with a DF, Z5, and Z6ii and the differences between the photos is... well... trivial, really. IBIS would be nice, but the VR in the lenses works really well. I would like it if a full-frame version was available. I also wish Nikon would put dedicated aperture rings on the lenses, which is my only real complaint with the Z cameras vs Fuji. Ah, well. Can't have it all, I guess.

Even though I own this body, I still go through reviews for different perspectives. Mine is set to M and the screen is always tucked away. I LOVE that it gives me time to enjoy my favorite hobby while delivering excellent results. I mostly pair mine with vintage Nikkor glass from the 60s to the 80s and the combination is magical! They add a great heft to the Z fc's light body and you get that vintage look, each lens has a unique character that I love. Most importantly, this camera got me back to shooting again! I haven't had such strong desire to grab my camera with me as often in a very long time. The manual focus with magnification unlocks the potential of older glass, and seeing how your result will look like in the excellent EVF is a great modern touch that brings the both out of tactile and vintage as well as snappy and modern. I cannot recommend this body enough!

Good, thorough review. I’d like this camera for a travel and video camera. I really like the Fuji and see Raymond’s point about the PASM setting. However, I have a dozen or so F mount lenses so it’s hard to think about switching systems. If Nikon ever makes an FTZ with the screw drive autofocus, I’ll be locked in for life.

Exactly....today's cameras are all very good. As for the vintage style, Fuji has been doing that for years. Glad to see Nikon bring that vintage look to the game as well. When it comes to buying a camera, I think most of the newest bodies are way more than the average hobbyist needs. A used pro body that is a few years old is probably the way to go in terms of performance for the price. Good video, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This is a great video and puts a lot into perspective. I have jumped back and forth between Nikon and Fuji. I own the Z50 and just sold the Z6. I also own Fuji 100xv and gave the XF to my daughter during the upgrade. In addition - I also have the FuJi XS10 which has been my go to lately. However the FC caught my eye. Here is why. Nostalgia!!! I cut my teeth when I was 18 on a Nikon FG. I loved that camera and could make it rock. Then I sold it after it sat on the shelf. While I could still buy another for sentimental reasons it wouldn’t be the same. This little baby may just scratch that itch. But I don’t like a shelf sitter so I want to make sure I will use it first. Your video along with your partner was very informative and is helping me decide to pull the trigger or not. Thank you.

Darn Nikon..they come out with a digital camera that looks just about identical to my beloved Nikon FM film SLR after I plunked down cash for a Fujifilm X100F a couple of years ago. I bought the Fujifilm for an easy to carry 'travel camera' for those times I didn't want to carry a bulkier SLR with lenses and it fulfills that function perfectly. At first I was intimidated by it's plethora of buttons, dials and menu functions but I've grown to like it. Had the Nikon Zfc been available at the time however, that would have been a no-brainer I would have chose it instead if for no other reason that it looks like and has similar control locations to my film SLR's.

I just got the Zfc body as a second camera to my Z6ii. I use the Z6ii and also Lumix S5 for video too but travelling abroad I didn’t want to take 2 lens systems (Z and l mount) with me due to weight and space restrictions but needed photo backup plus something I can use for video on a tripod for example in addition to the Z6ii. The crop factor also gives me some extra flexibility. I already have a good selection of full frame Z lenses 14-30 f4 24-70 f2.8 35 f1.8 85 f1.8 Tampon 70-180 f2.8 (with E to Z adapter) so it makes sense to just take the extra body and I can use the same speedlite too when flying.

Leigh and Raymond, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with the Nikon Z fc. I am considering renting one myself to see if it will fit my use case. I am a Nikon DSLR shooter and I am looking for a lightweight camera that does both videos and stills for when I am hiking and filming my making the photograph videos in the field. Others have told me that I should look at Fuji but really to have one camera system without having to sell my investment in glass. Thanks again for sharing. You have both provided another great review video that is not helping my G.A.S😉. Keep up the great work.

First, I have to thank Raymond for my Leica Z7II M system, it is my go-to setup these days. On the "PASM vs A-A/S-A" question, I see validity to both: * Set the automation in one step, see it in one place. * Set the automation based on what is automated. So while both approaches work, Nikon only had one option for the Zfc, because the Fuji approach *requires* an aperture ring, and the only lenses which will autofocus on the Zfc lack the aperture ring. While Fuji has been using the A-A/S-A approach in their X-series cameras, Nikon has been using PASM in their autofocus cameras since... 1988. It has been in every upper-level SLR/DSLR from the F4 to the D6. So while it may seem awkward for Fuji users, it is very comfortable for Nikon users from the past 3 decades. And for the film simulations, I'm much happier for Nikon to save the money for the licensing fee, it is such a small gimmick. I think Raymond's two points are a symptom of "KZfaq photographers" who have the luxury, and almost job requirement, to use many camera systems. Most photographers, especially those who would consider the Zfc, seem to have their one or two brands, making the comfort with Fuji less of a factor for them.

Hopefully in 2022, if it is easier to travel a bit more, and I go somewhere with a high "pickpocket" risk, a Zfc paired with a Voigtlander 35mm M-mount lens will be less appealing to steal while still having incredible image quality in a small, light package.

I think the PSAM dial will be helpful for those instances where you may need to switch back and forth between manual and a priority mode. The one thing I used to run into with my Fuji at times is I would forget that while I may have selected a shutter speed, I forgot to change the aperture from "A" to some aperture and thus the camera was in shutter priority mode, and vice-versa with the aperture ring and setting shutter speed to A and forgetting. Maybe it would have been wise for Nikon to actually do what Fuji does with their XT30 and have an Auto mode, and then a non-Auto mode. So Auto would override all settings, and the non-auto mode would enable the shutter speed dial and aperture ring (or secondary dial) to be used and not be linked to eachother like they would in Auto or program mode. I think that would have made more sense, but perhaps NIkon didn't do that because they didn't want to be accused of copying Fuji's design and methodology from that perspective.

@NickMJHall 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Raymond, your critique of the interface is vey well expressed and the Fuji logic is simple and appealing. But you might have given Nikon a bit more credit for being faithful to their own interface heritage. The Zfc and Df are completely consistent with Nikon film cameras. Old Nikon cameras never worked the Fuji way. The FA and F4 have PASM dials separate from the shutter speed dial. Many other Nikon bodies (including the one you show) have separate A and P positions on the shutter dial. Old Nikon users (like me) are used to this. It may be confusing for the shutter dial to be redundant in some modes. But there is an advantage in being able to switch modes quickly and leave your shutter setting as is. The ISO dial can also become a “minimum ISO” dial, which is kind of cool. Perhaps you could point this out in your next review ;)

I immediately fell in love on first sight with it, but on second I'm backing off again. First, I completely agree with Raymond (and Tony Northrup) on the PASM/dial confusion, the mix doesn't make sense to me and seems as if Nikon was having PASM users in mind first - if a dial does nothing when I turn it unless I "switch it on" via menu or PASM, the whole concept is lost on me. The second mistake to me is clearly making it APS-C, because the competition with Fuji in this field is immediately lost. Fuji has the control scheme right, has the right lens selection that 1. fit the style of the camera and 2. do come with an aperture ring, plus all the goodies like film simulations and years of refinement. If the Zfc was full frame, I could easily see myself (as a Fuji user) immediately falling for it as my full frame body to coexist with my existing gear, but as an alternative it doesn't work. I also think informed new users would go for Fuji if they wanted that style of camera, so the Zfc will probably only remain a stylish choice for existing Nikon users.

@@ericlarson2444 Yeah, Nikon positioned the Zfc firstly for the (gray/white hair) Nikonians who could vote with their wallets, hence a best seller right after its launch, against the social media noises. I think it did its parts to enable Nikon to increase its cash flow with a part bin camera, served notice that Nikon's heritage still bankable, revives the old Series E lens concept as the SE series (plus other consumer grade compact FF lenses), test the water for a Zf that can be another part bin model (Z5) and opens the door to attract some new buyers or slowing down the exodus of existing owners to other brands. Hopefully, the success of the Zfc will drive Nikon to continue the product line with a new Zfc II that includes IBIS, Auto ISO and better AF. Also, more compact and affordable primes and a part bin Zf. 🙂

Questions & Thoughts. I am and always have been a street/cityscapes amateur photographer who would shoot some action. I stopped wandering streets quite a few years ago but am considering getting back into it. So, I am just starting the digital thing. I have and still own 2 Nikon FM2s with motor drives and a few lenses from 20mm, 35mm, a 28-50mm and a 105mm. I, also, own a Leica M2 (1958) with a Summicron 50mm 2.0 and an Elmarit-M 90mm 2.8. So, I have been looking at The Nikon Zfc (looks like my FM2s that I love) and the Leica D-Lux 7. Now, you know my spending price range. I like that my Nikon lenses would work with the Zfc with the FTZii adapter, but these lenses would not have built in stabilizers and camera doesn't either. I believe the Leica D-Lux 7 has a fixed lens and that I cannot use my other Summicro and Elmarit-M lenses with it. Can I use them on the Nikon Zfc, with its adapter? The ergonomics are really nice, the kit 50-250 has given me some very good shots. So the Z fc, while tempting - I already have the Z50. PSA thing. Nikon nailed it for Nikon shooters, however; I'd prefer the Fuji execution - but then I used to shoot Pentax so I'm a bit flexible (just wish Nikon's direction for twisting of a lens wasn't backwards - very annoying). I do wish Nikon would come out with a semi-pro high end APC camera. Add in IBIS, very tough body, much faster processors and bigger battery. I think it would get some traction.

I shot Nikon F3's back from the early 1980's and purchased the Df body - and still love it. For me, it reminded me of that period and made taking a photograph an occasion - one is slowed down a trifle, but that was the point: certainly for me. I have a heap of gear: predominantly Canon, actually; but I broke ranks for the Df. I had no issue with the missing video (neither did the SLR's it harkened back to), but the FF D4 sensor was brilliant, and seemed to have been tweaked for better low-light performance. On to the Zfc. I have mixed feelings about this. I love the idea of the retro look, am ambivalent about the video (I am still not a videographer), but I am disappointed that the sensor is a crop unit instead of FF - the original FM series were 35mm, after all. I understand the marketing benefits and see it as a wildly appealing camera to many: it seems awesome! Still, I wonder if they will bring out a FF Zf body at some stage.

You are 100% right about the state of cameras in 2021. You can have great image quality, ergonomics and build at any price point. The true difference as you going up through the price range is the extra features that are more useful for pros. Better shutter count, more rugged build, more memory slots and extras batteries, more buttons and better quality in extreme low light. For my not professional photography I can do everything with any recent model. The fact that I have the amazing Dual Pixel AF on my mid range APSC DSLR is nice example. As for the Z fc, I don’t like the design of classic cameras. That was the main reason why I choose Canon over Fuji in first place and if I had to pick a Nikon that would have been the Z50 or Z5.

Having a Z6 II, the idea of a second Z body does peak my interests as does its retro styling and the bundle with the 28mm lens. However having a different battery, a screen that gets in the way of straps when doing waist level shooting has me just considering a used Z body like a z7 instead. I would love to have a second body that shares the batteries. The full frame z bodies are not really that much larger than the ZFC either….so I think my focus is more on these new 28 and 40 mm lenses to cater to my small carry around kit when I want it. Who knows, maybe Nikon will make a ZF which basically puts the retro styling wrapper on a Z6 II.

I've gone from hobby Canon shooter to hobby Fuji shooter, and I'm living the Fuji approach to controls. The Zfc just falls short of that for me, and it's also an APS-C body. The only way I could be persuaded to add a Z mount body to my collection, is for a full frame sensor. So a full frame Zfc might pique my interest. But then again, I'm pretty happy with Fuji in most respects and by now pretty deeply invested in that... Nikon is about a year too late for me! It will probably make a great camera for anyone either already invested in Nikon, or just starting out.

I love my Df, I remember the X100V being way too small and flimsy. I wouldn’t want the Df replacement to be any smaller or cheaply made. My A7R II is a bit small too, but I choose to use very small lenses for that system. For Nikon, my collection of AF-S, Ai-S and ZF.2 lenses has mostly big and heavy lenses and using the ultra compact Zfc without grip brings no benefits, besides I really dislike APS-C sensors. One gets used to PASM dials but setting ISO in menus is time consuming. I like the rendering of the Df sensor and never miss film simulations. My guess is the Df was very expensive and didn’t have commercial success. One could have the D800 with 36MP for same money, flash and similar rear layout to the D4, making a perfect companion camera.

Fuji classic chrome setting is the only reason to get a Fuji camera. Im not into the black and white on Fuji. Would have rather seen a neo pan emulation. Now, if Nikon would concentrate on film emulation, Kodachrome 50iso, Tri-x400 , ektachrome, portra 400 and an ilford 3200. Would really love to see film emulation with Fixed ISO attached to them. NO one is doing that. We’ve shot with limitations for decades and it would be nice to be challenged with limitations if you want to be and then have an option to be limitless.

The Zfc is going to go down as the camera that saved Nikon...from its financial problems, it has sold massively already. It is at a price point it had to be to sell. ( slightly more than the Z50 which it's based on). The ideal camera that it is for older photographers like me that can play with all the old controls if i want, and the younger vloggers out there with it's flip out screen. There you are a camera for everyone..!! I do so wish my mrk1 Z6 had a flip out screen like that it would make it perfect for me. If you remember me am not a fan of APC sensor or the plastic mount on lenses. Could Nikon make a Z6 3 without a flip screen 🤔 i don't think so the uproar would be enormous... it's the one thing i missing on my Z6 not all of us can afford or need expensive Atmos recorder. One last thing i don't care for film simulation of fuji, if i want b/w or a blue tone or whatever Nikon can give me that. The market the zfc is aimed at dose not need this. Great video as always 👍 👌

The lack of the flip out screen (which I like on the D5200 and missed on all other Nikons except the P7800) drove me away from the Z system. I get that some photos don't like it. And suspect most of them would change their minds after using one shooting close to the floor a huge building or something else down that line. appreciated that Raymond pointed out the parodox usage concept compared to Fujifilm - if it has to be dials, then Auto-ISO needs to be on the dial as well, for the moments you just want to care about shutter speed and aperture and forget ISO. But then, the aperture ring is also absent. So, no, that body will not bring me back to invest in Nikon.
@rhythmace1
@rhythmace1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Joamonica It's definitely a tricky design choice, but I hear a lot of photographers don't like the fully articulated screens, and as much as I would like to be able to use them for selfies or the low-angle portrait shots I almost never take, I prefer not having first flip out and only then adjust angle in the vast majority of use cases, and also not have the angled screen sticking out to the side. Besides, on the Z50 and Zfc you can flip the screen 180% downwards so selfies are still an option (not a big selfie-taker myself but shots of me and my partner on holiday etc are good to be able to take). You're absolutely right that auto should be a setting on any ISO dial!

Interesting. Thank you for posting. I’m still rolling with ancient NIkon D5200 and D300’s. Way past due for upgrading to current or almost current, but I don’t make money with my cameras anymore.. then again the old bodies and old lenses are not really fun to use compared to my iPhone 11 camera that is always in my pocket. I’m leaning towards a Z6 (used) or a Z6 II. I shoot video with Blackmagic Pocket 4K. Since I have older DSLR’s with questionable AF abilities with their and newer generation AF Nikon lenses, I shoot most subjects in manual with older manual lenses... which are not fun with D5200 (live view mode, adjust aperture, fire). The D300’s can meter with older manual lenses. In fact what floats my boat these days are the retro design lenses by Lensbaby (twist 60, velvet etc.). Lomography (Degaurotype Achromatic - not purchased yet) various Helios vintage or new models. All benefit from full frame sensors where most of the vintage lenses magic is in the corner and side. So if this body had been a full frame sensor I would give it more interest. However it does fit my sensibility however. For video I used to use broadcast JVC and now Blackmagic systems. I would like to get 1 camera to take out that when fitted with Atomos Ninja V takes great pics and 10 bit or 12 bit prores raw or similar BRAW which points to Nikon Z 6 II. Though to confuse the issue a Fujifilm GFX50 for stills might be really interesting in a year or two... again, I’m not making money with any of these, though I might again with video and I’m really looking forward to using my Lensbaby, Helios and future Lomography full frame retro lenses on a modern full frame sensor.

I have no confusion with the PASM dials and aperture/shutter speed stuff. Seems logical to me. I'm disappointed with the viewfinder display. This is my first mirrorless camera and I was expecting a better image in the viewfinder than I am getting, so much so that I have hardly used this camera. Not sure if this is quirk of all mirrorless cameras but I find it disappointing. Coda: So, I was inspired by this video and my own harsh comments to actually get out and use the camera a bit today. Yes, display resolution is still not what I would like but I'm actually enjoying the Zfc. I love the portability of it--went for a walk as part of my rehab and took the camera to photograph what's left of the flowers. I was surprised by the quality of the images, and I love the back screen and the fact that it can be positioned a variety of ways (important when one cannot bend down). The 16-50mm did a super job of picking out details in the flowers, almost as good as my 60mm macro. Definitely a great walk around/street photo camera.

It's not confusing until you're in aperture priority, but you see some fast action that you want to capture immediately, so you change the shutter speed dial quickly to 1/1000th and nothing happens. Basically, you have to check the PASM dial, then check the aperture, then your shutter speed, instead of just the latter two.

I have had the D7500, Z50, Z6, and also now Z fc. I think if you set the AF to AF-C Dynamic Area mode and set AF sensitivity to high, and you're shooting in good light it might be OK for birds in flight. For still wildlife (deer, elk, bears, etc) I recommend AF-S Single point and have a button set to AF lock and I think Z fc will be a perfect camera (the Z fc still has the same sensor than the D500, Z50, D5, and I suspect it's actually a BSI version because of how incredibly well it does in low light). But to be honest, the older DSLR such as D500, D7500, D5, D850 had better autofocus than the current gen Z7 ii or Z6 ii, mirrorless AF still has a bit to catch up.

I had a Fuji XT30 and XT5. They're gone. Before that I had a Z50. I sold the Z50 to go to Fuji because everyone on the internet and their mother raves about it. But after owning them they seem OK. The build quality is NOT as good as any Nikon. Fujifilm has plenty of lenses but their all the same, or MORE expensive than Nikon lenses. The Fujinon 23mm F1.4 for example costs $800. Meanwhile the class leading Nikon S 50mm f1.8 is $200 less new, and can be found anywhere for $500. Also, the Nikon APSC 20mp sensor performs better than any Fuji sensor I've tried. I'm sorry, I tried to like Fuji but they're not caught up yet. The 20mp sensor for Nikon, used in the D500, D7500, Z50, and Z30, and Z fc is incredible in low light even with high ISO, and in low ISO the dynamic range and colors are nearly indistinguishable from the FF brothers. Go look at comparison pictures. The Nikon 20MP sensor outperforms the XT5, R10, R7, XH2, and even Sony previous gen FF in terms of color and noise at high ISO. Sony high ISO looks green, gross.

Do you realize that almost every mirrorless camera out there has to have a different mount to it's DSLR counterparts? The sensor distance is physically different on a mirrorless. Fuji Clone? Nope, more like Fuji is an early Nikon Clone because this is Nikon's legendary throwback to their own FM/FE cameras. in 2010 as a Nikon user since the late 70s I was waiting for Nikon to make this camera, it never came and fuji basically filled that gap. I Kind of agree with the "A" settings but the PSAM is good enough, but being the ISO is left out of the PSAM setting mode's recipe it would have been nice to at least have an "A" setting on the ISO dial. I think if Nikon included "license" film simulations it would cost more. Fuji does it because they ARE a film manufacturer and don't have to license themselves out for their Fujifilm emulsion digital copies. How ever I wonder if like on fuji cameras, the Nikon Z can program and store DIY film simulations so you can get similar effects to your favorite emulsions from different makes, I haven't checked on that because I have been using post processing simulations or manually tweaking it myself in Lr. Over my time with Nikon I have collected F mount lenses from all series, Ai, Ai-S, AF-D, AF-S G. I have also heavily invested in Fuji X since 2012 because Nikon stuck with DSLRs. I just got my first Z (FX) body and FTZ this past spring using my F glass and now my fujis are not being used. This Z fc will be my next purchase as I will sell all [maybe but one] of my Fuji cameras and lenses because right now FX and DX Nikon will have me covered in One System, and the Z fc will be ALL my Fujis in one camera.
