I recently invested in The z system. I read all of the dismissive reviews as well back 2018 when the z system debuted. Bought into the Sony system but over rime decided to try the z 6 and after a month or so bought the z7 and haven’t looked back. Bought the 50mm f1.8 and it blew me away. Your right about the s lenses. They are above consumer grade glass. I would dare to say they are almost reference lenses. So good just not 1.4’s. I’m considering both the Tamron 35 F1.4 and the Nikon 35 f1.8. Your sample photos are compelling lol. Had my mind set on the Tamron but now I have to do some thinking lol. Thanks Darren

I think the build quality is very good. Plastic isn't necessarily bad. The seal at the bayonet is the best design I've seen. Agree that the motors Nikon use for these makes better focus pulls during video than what I've seen from the competition. Add to that the lack of focus breathing. I also think its worth mentioning that the 35/1.8S has dual focus motors meaning it delivers great results also when focused at its closest setting. In the past you had to change this manually on wide angle lenses. Like for example on the Zeiss 50mm f4 Distagon for the Hasselblad V series. Sometimes I think this feature is called floating lens elements. All the Z Nikkors with dual motors have this feature automatically, except for the 50/1.8S which has a single motor (its also the fastest focusing lens, but as you say, speed isn't everything, especially in hybrid use). But the most outstanding quality is, as you point out, the optics of the 35/1.8S. Truly outstanding. I also use the 20/1.8S, the 50/1.8S and the 85/1.8S and they're all crazy good. Certainly up there with lenses costing more than twice as much meaning these Z primes are outstanding value.

The Nikon 35 1.8 S is my favorite Z lens and I have the stellar 50 1.8 S . The Nikon Z 1.8s are probably the best 1.8s ever . Most if not all of the Nikon S 1.8 lenses are considered better than the 1.4 F mount versions . Nikon has set a new bar with the 1.8 S line .

I own the z6 and watched your review of the Sigma 35 1.4 and I was leaning towards that lens but now after watching this review of the Nikon 1.8s 35 I am wondering which one is better? I know the Sigma is very sharp but you tested both which one is better? Weight for me is not an issue. Thank you for your input

People have to move beyond the old 1.8 isn't professional paradigm. New S series 1.8 lenses often optically equal or surpass F mount 1.4s, and are built for _smooth, silent, low breathing_ video, and are weather sealed. Love to get your take on the Z9 from a real photographer's perspective.

Thank you for the introduction to the 35mm. I have the Z6II but still, use my 35mm F-mount with the FTZ adapter. I'm not sure if for the cost, I'd stay with my 50mm F1.8 S lens, rather than buy this 35mm. Have you tried the 35mm F-mount on this camera?

All of the z lenses are pretty spendy compared to what else is out in the market.

Your premise is false. I want to watch 15 minutes lens reviews that are critical. However, the majority of people want to watch 5 minute infomercials (that's how you get subs and clicks and make money on youtube).
