How many photos can you take with a Nikon Z8 on one battery charge?
I field-tested the Nikon z8 over five days to see how many images I could create before my battery died... all under different shooting situations and camera settings.
You'll find out if Pac-Man eats batteries faster than the Nikon z8 AND if you need a Power Battery Grip.

You need to turn Airplane mode on, Nikon users have know this since D500 days. With Airplane mode off it drains the battery like crazy. I’m getting near 2000 shots on a charge on my Z 8

Why does having airplane mode on affect battery life so much?

What does airplane mode do in a camera, same as smartphone? Why don't call it low power mode?

Two weddings down. Between 1500 and 1800 images per battery. My Z9 is more than double that but I am more than pleased.

Today, at a dog show I shot 3294 frames with my Z8 and had more than 50 percent battery life remaining. I don't have to search more than a second for the composition, so I don't waste battery like you might when the images are elusive as you experienced in shooting wildlife.

Hi John, Thanks for sharing. That's a lot of photos! Curious; was it a paid gig?

@@ParkerPhotographic Nope. And it gets worse. A month ago I took over 40,000 images in six days (with my Z9 and Z7ii) after being asked you the 3rd straight year to shoot candids at a national specialty for a certain breed. My day job makes it a regulatory hassle to earn income from another source. I do the photography as a joy and a way to relieve the stress from my career. I do encourage people who use my photos for ads, etc. to make a contribution to that breeds foundation which investigates diseases for dogs. So the people get nice photos, the dogs get research and I get less ulcers and lots of hours in Lightroom.😏

With all the hype about batteries draining, I went out and bought 2 extra batteries. I don't keep track on how many pictures I end up taking, but I find 2 batteries is enough for what I do. So everyone, just stop and take a breath. If you run out of batteries, buy another one, or get a power pack to charge your battery when on a shoot. In my case, I have an extra battery unused.

In hindsight, this video is flawed in regards to how I approached battery life. It's more about how many hours they last... not how many photos (since they lasted about the same regardless of how many photos I took). I also find 2 batteries work perfect for me... about 2 hours of shooting time per battery.

Hi, do you know around how long you were shooting for & which specific batteries? Trying to decide if z8 battery life means I should buy z9 instead

@@ryanschneebaum1297 Hi, I was shooting for 3 hours. Mostly Birds in flight with a lot of 30-40 frame bursts fat 10-20 frames per second. I was mainly using evf. I used 2 x nikon branded enel15c batteries

You cannot measure mirrorless cameras in “number of shots”. The screens eat way more power than the actual taking the photo does. Your battery performance is very dependent on how long you have the camera awake. That 1 landscape photo that you wait for the right light or long exposures to smooth water will use way more power than shooting a 5 second 20fps burst of a bird in flight. Using reasonable power management techniques like turning the camera off between shooting or setting the sleep timer to a more reasonable time will drastically change the life of the battery. Your testing was certainly looking for a worst case. I’m not sure if you are doing that to make the camera look bad or to make more clicks, but it certainly doesn’t seem like a real world test that photographers would be best served by.

I appreciate your sincere effort to help your photo students. However, the concept of your video seems to be you trying to run the battery down as quickly as possible. What? Who does that? You are using a very powerful, modern, mirrorless camera that can certainly use a lot of battery if not managed. Why not try managing the battery power, not wasting it to see how quickly you can drain the battery. It seems that the logic of this video is backwards from what most photographers would attempt to do; therefore, it seems quite unrealistic to me.

1. Have you seen the questions I receive from students? No, you haven't. If you did, you'd understand this is for them and not you. 2. You know how often I've come across another photographer who "sees" a bird, holds down the shutter, and takes hundreds of photos in less than 5 minutes? This video is for them, not you. 3. Did you watch till the end where I lay out my 3 Golden Rules for SELECTIVELY shooting and how it "preserves" the battery? Probably not. Otherwise, we wouldn't be having this discussion. 4. This channel IS NOT FOR YOU! It's for beginners.
