I have heard about it but I dont see it yet. I did make the mistake on time while out shooting, not realizing I was with a Sony rep while I was shooting the Nikon Z9 for the first time when he asked my if I had tried Sony..... I told him that I had a hated the lack of color. Later I found out that he worked for Sony in R&D..... ah well. I will try them again in a couple of years but for what I have seen - they are not there for what i want yet. 🙏❤🤗

It worked on my Z9 for a while until the last update - then the focus would bounce all over the place. It still works perfectly though on my D800. I had it out shooting dragonflies in flight a about a month ago!!! The only lens I wish I could have tried when I had my Z9 was the new 180-600.... or some of the other long Z lenses I wanted to buy. Ah well. The 300 F2.8 is still one my all time favorite lenses. 🙏🤗💖

Life is short - they may not be a tomorrow. I got that from my mom and live my life that way. Some of the regrets I have in life are jumping on an opportunity. Money is a tool, it comes, it goes and we cant take it with us. Better to enjoy something right now while we can instead of waiting until we are unable. That is a fantastic price - I would get it and enjoy it. 🙏❤🤗 I like to joke that if the credit companies are dumb enough to give me credit to buy this stuff, then I am dumb enough to take them up on it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts John. I agree the Canon and Sony focus is great. I’ve used the Sony A1 and Canon R5. Both were brilliant. If you asked me which one I’d go for it’d be the A1. But both those cameras didn’t come close to my D850 RAW file capability in terms of DR and color. Still love my old DSLR over mirrorless just like you said you love your D800. Be interesting to see Sony have a high end APSC coming soon touted as the baby A1. Time will tell. Great video buddy 👍🙏
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Adrian - your D850 is amazing and it may be one I buy again. The Nikon DSLR single point is one of the best I have used. I keep the D800 in single point all the time. You know, using a Z lens may make a difference but if I cant get one, it is a mute point. This camera and set up cost too much to miss simple shots like that or have the video focus breath like that. The PF 500 works brilliantly on my D800 as does my old 300 F2.8. Those are not the only time that it happened but it was the last straw for me. I can sell the Z9 with adapter, extra batteries and get my EF 800mm lens and be happy. I think that Nikon releasing a camera that will be priced at what the R5 is priced at is ridiculous and dig at their current users - I believe they are missing their market but that is just me. Ah well - it has been a fun journey - thank you for listening to me rant in the video.... it really got to me. 🙏❤🤗 PS - when the Z8 does come out it will be competing with new stuff from Canon and Sony with further advances on their tech that is already better. They need to realize this is not the age of the DSLR anymore as far as new sales go. Frustrating. That same thinking with software licensing almost killed Apple until they brought Steve Jobs back and he brought out the Ipod...... with attention to details like hearing the click when you plugged in your headphones.....

You have to try it to believe it, I found out after I bought the R7 and RF 100-500 that it had better AF tracking than my Z9 so I'm back where I started in 2003 Canon, Sold my Z9 and bought the R3 which is fantastic but I also bought the RF 800 f11 and in good light it's actually pretty good although I haven't tried it on my R7 yet. Actually after Canon brought out the firmware update for the R5 Nikon probably decided not to announce the Z8 yet lol. BTW Lightroom new Denoise does wonders to high ISO as does DxO;)

Thank you for that - exactly - you have to try it to see it for yourself. I expect a lot of grief on this but the Z9 is just too overpriced for the poor performance. When I sell my Z9 and all accoutrements that go with it, I am going to buy an old EF 800mm F5.6 - heavy but man that lens was a dream...... and more in my price range that is the RF version. Again - thank you!! 🙏❤🤗 PS - I was shooting my Sigma lens on the R5 today and editing the photos using that AI in Lightroom!! It is AWESOME.

Well I watched till the end to hear you out (as you asked) and didn’t learn anything. No real examples with maybe a Ninja to see what’s going on as you’re taking photos. When you got to your favorite Nikon lens, the 300mm f2.8 and said it didn’t work on the Z9 I was really confused. That lens is one of my favorite too and it works perfectly on my Z9. In fact it works better on my Z9 than it did on my 850, by a long shot. Shooting it wide open. The same with my My 600mm f4 E. In fact all my f mount glass has worked flawlessly with Z cameras using the FTZ adaptor. The Z9 animal AF is excellent too. As good as the R5, the A1, I don’t know. I do know the Z9 is not as bad as you say… by a long shot. I’ll keep my Z9. No thumbs down from me just because your results are different from mine.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Randy. I love the clarity and color of Nikon and always will. My 300 F2.8 is one of the original ones - big, heavy all glass and metal. When I rented a Z9 it worked great. When I got mine, it worked great. After the last firmware update, it did not. I put it on my D800 and it worked fine. My older lens I use for landscapes is a hit and miss as well but if I put it in manual, no problem. The 70-200 that I have used for many events ifs iffy with the last update. My old 500 F4, the 200-500 and the 500 PF are all spot on. The frustration is having it go out of focus or having the focus point just to something else with both stills and video. I have had people say you need to be in this mode when this happens, then that mode for that. With Canon, I set my parameters and it just works. The focus point sticks to the eye and that is what we are paying for. Initially, I wrote it off but to me, it seems to be consistent - and again for the price, not worth it. If it were in the $2000 range and trying to compete with the Canon R7 or R8, I could justify it, but the Canon R5 that is two years older is more consistent. If something like that happened at an event, I would have been horrified. This is just my opinion based on what I want and at what price. I cam sell this and buy the 800mm Canon lens I want. I will still shoot Nikon but it will be my old D800 and I my buy another D850 too. I switched to Canon because of the R5 and the tech. It has gotten better and I was really hoping that the Z9 would be better than it is. To that end, there is a reason Mark Smith still shoots Sony even though he has played with the Z9. He has had the same conclusions. Thank youf ro watching to the end!! 🙏❤🤗

Fully Agree, The 300 f2.8 VRii works perfect on my Z9 with the latest Firmware. I also shoot Sony and Fuji. I shoot the 300 f2.8 vrii on my Fuji XH2s with a Fringer adaptor. So why do I shoot Nikon as the main system. because I have used it for 30 yrs and understand the focus system, the ergonomics and the IQ. I have bought Sony A9ii for its magic focus and shot the A1, are they better than Nikon or even the Fuji, maybe, but the focus from success depends on the photographer and what he/she wants to accomplish with the image. Fram the days of manual focus, to DSLR's I have learned and practice to be in control of the camera and not the other way round. When I use Sony the focus is out of my control. it follows Bird, dog, cat, thing like nothing and if you photograph diving birds all day, it is magic, when you shoot to compose, create a specific look I want to be in control. The best pilots in the world are those who trained not using simulators, today's pilots cannot fly like the old once in challenging conditions because the computer runs the show, For me the modern obsession about focus systems and subject detection is like shooting in Auto mode. Yes I enjoy the eye detection and some of the benefits the new auto focus systems offer, but they added complexity, they make mistakes, and then we blame the AF system instead of understanding that Nikon, Sony, Canon, Fuji and OM present different fundamentals to their ficus systems. That is why OM users say the OM-1 is better than Sony, and the Nikon users say Z9 is better than Canon or whatever. Last point, never invest in a system because of the focus system, next generation the bodies will change, who present the best overall system? Nikon with its fantastic primes with build in TC's, or Canon who believe that a 100-500 f7.1 is what their users want, or Fuji with a 150-600 f8 or Sony with a 200-600 f6.3 or Nikon again with 3, 400 mm lenses 400 f4.5, 400 f2.8 with build in TC and 100-400? They all have strengths and all have short comings, The other brands need primes like the Nikon 400 f4.5 or 500 f5.6 or 800 f6.3 pf, light affordable and fantastic IQ, Nikon Needs a 150/200-600 and some other glass. So maybe it is time to present more quality images and describe the process, images, what settings worked best and how to optimise the gear you use, rather then justify why people change gear, why the af is so much better if it really is not. This here is why Camera brands never give pre production models to you tubers or influencers but to their brand pro's as they know what is expected in the field when it counts.

@@jakesdewet3567 AMEN to all of it. The most fun I have is shooting my old D800 - I am in complete control and I have to think about each shot to make sure the focus is correct, not too high with the IS, shutter speed fast enough. I really, really enjoy that. And even earlier this evening I was sitting here searching for a Nikon 800 PF because I really want one - want not need. I really want the EF version of Canons 800 mm and I will that sometime by summer - again, a want. When i shoot, I go between manual focus, single point (my favorite) and eye AF. My shots from my D800 are every bit as sharp as the Z9... and at a fraction of the price. It frustrates me that I spent so much on this set up when I could have bought the Canon lens I want... but then I would have wondered. This new tech is fun to use like driving a new car with lane assist or blue tooth for your phone. We don't need it but we use it since we have it. I do find it interesting that the internet is going nutz comparing the upcoming Z8 to the 3 year old Canon R5. I do hope it is an amazing camera. And yes the new coating and focus motors on the newer lenses are awesome but the older lenses are still really awesome. My favorite 300 F2.8 is all metal, no VR and you can feel the focus motors when they move the glass. It was awesome before the last update and that breaks my heart - as I said, it is old. Ah well - just an observation for the way I want to shoot. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! 🙏❤🤗

The question is what Nikon's going to some out with. The Z9 is now 18 months old. Some people say they won't release a Z8 that's better than the Z9. I'm more like, if that's possible, they should, and then they should probably get a Z9 II out. Having said all that, I'm sure you'll agree with me that the Z9 has some advantages over other flagships. 8K60 video being one. Also, Steve Perry made a video recently comparing the Z9 and Sony A1. He prefers the Nikon, and AF-wise, for what he does, they seem to be neck and neck. Not saying that that means that you are wrong or something. If your experiences are as you say, then that's the case, and that's what you have to decide on. And you don't need to explain that decision to anyone either. I do say this with one assumption, and that is that you have tried to tweak the Nikon autofocus, used different modes, etc. I also say this because some other YT photographers have mentioned that with the Z9, it's more critical to pick the right mode for every situation. Again, that doesn't mean that that would have helped you. There are so many variables, and varying experiences. And again, you have your experience to decide on. I do wonder if the differences you observed relate to the number of AF points on the sensor. Between the A1, R5 and Z9, the Z9 has the fewest. Then comes the A1, and then, far and away, comes the R5. A "lowly" D750 shooter (I think it's still an excellent camera ;)).
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Thank you!!! Your D750 (I have mine too) and Nikon DSLRs in general have what I consider to be the best single point focus of all time. Bold I know to say that but it is true in my opinion. The Z9 is good when in focus I love the 8K and 4K 120- the R5 can do that without sound but it is two years - 2 YEARS older. The newer Canons can do that too and still at a lower price. The R7 eye AF is also better and at only $1500! How can Nikon think they will compete with the Z8 at the same price as what the R5 goes for? When it does hit the market, Canon and Sony will again have new product that will still surpass what Nikon is offering. I have heard about what Steve has said..... but even Mark Smith who has tried the Z9 and can pick what ever lens he wants..... still shoots Sony! Steve is great and his videos are awesome - for him that may work, but I want something that work all the time. If you do upgrade to an Z - some of your older lenses may not work. My all time favorite 300 F2.8 does not work on the Z9..... heartbreaking. All of the lenses I have thrown at the R5 and R7 work flawlessly. Ah well - just my opinion. Thank you, thank you!! 🙏❤🤗 PS - if I have to putz around to get the right setting for something to work when wildlife is moving fast, it is again the wrong camera. With Canon, i either push the record and it goes into auto recording, or push the button I have set up to put it into video for my settings...... and it just works. No fuss, no muss.... and at lower price..... and it stays in focus on the eye!

As owners of both I think R5 is similar with AF, there’s no dramatic difference. But from what I’ve seen R7 is better than both (crop helps). I think the Z9 just doesn’t jive with you as it’s more complicated of an AF system and you really struggled with some basic settings (ie. Not having af in video with Z9 because you weren’t in AF-F, buffer settings issues , etc) and don’t seem to apply/try tips from your viewers. Z9 just doesn’t work well with the way you shoot but you can get all those shots you showed with the Z9 system. Still enjoy your videos. 👍

I thank you!! I tried all the tips - I really did. I want something that just works out of the box, not having a couple of focus modes depending on what or how I was shooting. Maybe I am limited, but when focus jumps from the subject to something else - that is a no go for me. I hope the Z8 is better but I also suspect that Canon will release something right behind it that will still surpass it. I guess spending that much money on a camera that is not much better than the Z6 or D780 for video is something I dont want to do. Yes, Canon misses focus too but not to this extent. Again, wildlife is quick. If I need a couple of focus modes to make it work, it is not for me. I think Mark Smith has had the same conclusions and still shoot Sony for those reasons. Great video I use to do landscape and have the Z6 but I'm really enjoying birding but the Z6 is useless for anything that moves and Z6II is double the price and still no bird eye detect so I'm thinking of switching to Canon and maybe get the R7 as the extra mega pixels will come in handy for Landscape and if its a wild contrast then I will bracket. People on FB Nikon group will say I do not know how to use the camera but most people on Flickr who use Nikon take static bird images and any sharp bird flying images on there I wonder how many soft bursts did they take to get 2 sharp images. So why wait for Z8 as that will be overprices comapred with Canon and Sony and in my view Nikon is just lazy theses days. With Canon you get more sharp images period and bigger bang for the buck.

For wildlife I am of the mind that you want performance and fast focus - static wildlife is much easier than fast moving subjects but they are moving all the time - that is where the gear comes into play. Unless you have shot other systems, you just wont know what works for you and how they perform. All new ... and old cameras are great in the right hands but newer photographers want something that works at a realistic price. Hands down - the Canon R7. A beast at a price that is still a stretch for many. Hi John, I really enjoyed your video. You have been fair with all the good options out there. These days, cameras are so expensive that we have to pick the best options for our hard saved money. I believe that the 3 major brands have very good options available. I would love to see Nikon coming up with affordable mirrorless cameras. If we are very honest and look at what is offered right now Canon has so much good cameras right now at different price point : R10, R8, R7, R6 I - II, R5, R3. What is nice about Canon is all these incredible firmware updates they have done. Nikon did just the same with the Z9. Sony really disappoints with firmware updates. It looks like they want us to buy a new camera each time we want improvements / corrections. The R5 is an outstanding camera and the R7 is really hard to beat for the price and firmware updates have been amazing !

It has problems as well but nothing is perfect. I find it funny that Nikon is releasing a camera to compete with a 3 year old Canon...... hmmmm. Canon will release the R1 shortly after and again be far ahead as far as tech is concerned. The Z9 is a great camera but no for me as a wildlife camera. Awesome - it if works for you, stick with Nikon. They produce super sharp images and have unsurpassed Nikon color. For wildlife, it is just not working for me. If I could actually find the Z PF 800mm lens that has been out for a year and no one has in stock anywhere around here, I would buy that and try it - I may have a different opinion. I was a life long, die hard Nikon shooter, but, the reason I left Nikon was I wanted tech that was available in other systems. Sony was AMAZING but I did not like the colorless raw files. Then the R5 came out and I was blown away. Every time I pick that camera up, it still impressed me to this day. So for me, and what I want from a camera I will just keep shooting Canon. Dont you find it interesting the Nikon is releasing a new camera to compete with a 3 year old Canon? This frustration reminds me again of why I stopped shooting Nikon to begin with. @@JonnyPink65 But why has the Canon R5 been for sale at a discount for the last 6 months? Sounds like they are worried about Nikon's upcoming offerings. It is very frustrating that we can't get new cameras every 6 months like Canon or Sony but you have to admit they have spared themselves the technical limitations of the time and have waited for a huge leap in tech to make the next version. That wasn't so much the case with the leap from Z6/7 to the mark ii but they have made it clear that slow and steady does have it's advantages. The glass that Nikon has been putting out has far surpassed Canon and Sony's offerings (your right if you can get a 600 or 800PF). The Z mount has a bright future with the widest aperture out of all the majors. Canon merely slapped RF mounts to its longer focal length EF glass. I see great innovations coming out of Nikon. Not just about AF.

I would move to sony as their stuff is mega compact, but their lens line up is absolutely terrible. Ill wait until canon brings out pre-burst into r5ii or whatever the next iteration is, and I'll consider the swap then. I think the second canon releases a compact dslr stacked frame with preburst, I'm switching (potentially, unless Nikon does software wonders for AF 😂)

You know, the final straw for me is that I can NOT get any Z glass - I wanted to buy either the Z 800 PF (Canon's 800 is only a little heavier and is faster), and or I wanted to buy the Z 600 F4 with a built in tele - also not available. So, I reached out to Nikon - they sent me a link that is....... backordered. No matter how good a body my be, it is useless without a lens. I also think the photos with the R5 are cleaner and ..... the Canon focus even with the inexpensive R7 are just better and stickier. It is better in-body tech. Nikon is still just so far behind. I have my Z9, adapter, extra batteries, PF 500 and 1.4 tele all up for sale on eBay. I will put al that towards a new Canon lens. On the other side, I just used an RF 800 F11 for the first time - a lens I was afraid of because of how slow it is..... and I am blown away. That was also another seal the deal for me. Please get rid of the z9 already!! You make it look so BAD! Guys like Steve Perry, Tinman Lee and Jan Wegner seem to think it performs great for wildlife photography. Also the new Nikon telephoto primes with built in TC’s are unarguably the best on the market right now. You gotta do what works for you, I get it. But you are comparing the nikon z9 shot with the 500mm pf and 1.4x tc vs the r5 and an unknown lens or settings. TC’s compromise af speed. You are also shooting a distant (smaller) moving target with the Nikon during midday with plenty of heat haze vs perched songbirds with clearly visible eyes, that are much closer to the camera with the Canon. If you like Canon shoot Canon, but this video is worthless in terms of any meaningful comparison between the R5 and the z9.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Well - I have a 500mm lens on each with a 1.4 tele on each, each is adapted - each shooting at 700mm. I shoot early mornings usually ...... and I could argue all your points because the setting are almost the same when I am out shooting as far as time, distance and location. The Z9 is awesome for perched birds but struggles more with a subject in a moving and busy background. As far as the photographers you mention that now promote Nikon - look who is sponsored by Nikon when the first Nikon Z8 reviews start hitting the net - I am sure they will say it is amazing, or that Nikon "did not tell them what to say". I don't do that because I don't want to have to submit my video review for review ahead of time - I put little stock in stuff like that. The Z9 is impressive comparing it to other Z body Nikons but my old D800 is every bit as sharp as the Z9. And I am sure the new Z lenses are amazing - I would love to try and own the Z800 PF but it is not available here in the US - a lens that has been out for over a year. But you are correct, I should just shoot Canon and have fun. I can shoot my old Nikons any time I like and also have fun. I was/am just disappointed with the Nikon Z9 - I really expected more. Ah well - just an observation for the way I want to shoot and what works for me. Thank you for the input 🙏❤🤗

@@JonnyPink65 if you are going to compare two different cameras it really helps to have a scientific comparison. You should be shooting the same subject and analyzing the same variable. As far as sponsors go, Steve and tinman aren’t sponsored by anyone and were both shooting the a1. They switched back to Nikon for the 600 f4 tc and Jan wegner is a canon guy who is really tempted by the 600 f 4 tc. Mark smith who you actually mentioned in another comment has been paid by Sony. He has videos sponsored by Sony on his KZfaq channel. So I’m not really sure what you are talking about. If Nikon doesn’t work for you then don’t shoot them. But that doesn’t mean the gear doesn’t work, you just can’t figure it out. It seems like your last few videos were just a confirmation bias.

@@johnvanderploeg Well, when the first reviews for the Nikon Z8 come out, it will be interesting to see if Steven and tinman have reviews - I will hold my opinion on sponsorship until then and I like Steve's videos. For me, I have more consistency with the R5 - there are many things I prefer on the Z9... but I want consistency. Maybe it is me and that is OK - it means that the R5 is better suited to my style or my incompetence - however you want to look at it. I am still looking for an 800mm Z PF lens and I do hope that Nikon puts out a 200-600 with the Z9 to also compete with Sony - I will buy it. But on both cameras< i have a 500mm prime with the latest 1.4 tele. The 500 PF I use on the Nikon is new. The 500mm Canon I have is first version of that lens. The advantage should be with the Nikon. Both have been shot at the beach and in all the same places. I do find it funny that we are all still comparing the new upcoming Z8 to a 3 year old camera that Nikon is just catching up to. I suspect that they will release the R1 shortly that will again jump ahead of everyone - then Sony will release another flagship pushing everyone forward again. It is an endless viscous cycle. And I am not a fan of the new Canon lenses other than two that I have used - I think the older ones are better. But for me as a whole package, the Canon works better for me. I am disappointed because I was a life long Nikon guy who switched when the R5 came out. I finally bought the Z9 and for a while was really happy but as I used it more, and then compared it to Canon..... well, it became a purchase regret. I am waiting to sell it until I see what Nikon comes out with or to see if I can find an 800 PF. But until then..... well.... it will sit on the floor with all the other gear I hardly touch. And again, this is just my opinion after using both systems and what works for me. 🙏❤🤗

@@johnvanderploeg My reply did not post. I use a new PF 500 with the latest 1.4 tele on the Z9 - I use an old version one 500mm lens with the latest 1.4 tele on the Canon - the advantage should be with the Z9. I shoot the same places, the same way, same time of day over and over. The one time I compared the two the same day was for stills shooting humming birds in a place where you just had to point your camera and you got a great photo. It will places like fast moving birds in trees or the beach where it became apparent. This is not something I came up with - I have been shooting this for 4 months. Maybe it is me and that the Canon just suits how I shoot better I do find it interesting as everyone is teasing the new Z8 that they are all comparing it to a 3 year old camera. As far as Steve and Tinman, I like Steve's videos but I think you will also see them reviewing it as soon as it is actually announced - that will speak volumes so I will hold off until then. I was a life long Nikon guy that switched when the R5 came out. I waited a long time to buy the Z9 but it has become a purchase regret. I am still looking for the 800 PF that was released a year ago................... I am hoping Nikon does announce a 200-600 and I will buy it.... if it is available. If not, no worries. I have a system that works for me that I prefer. The Z9 is a great camera and if that is all you know then you wont know what I am talking about. I am not a big fan of the newer RF lenses other than a couple, but I think the older ones are still fantastic. And please remember these are my opinions based on how I shoot and only for the focus system. Way better than any other Z camera but over priced for what you get. @@JonnyPink65 I agree, shoot what works best for you! But it helps to remain objective about the strengths and weaknesses of other cameras. The a1, for example, is a great camera. But it’s overpriced, uses extremely expensive cf express type a cards, doesn’t shoot 8k 60 or have a two way tilt screen. These are just a few of its weaknesses compared with the z9. The r5 doesn’t shoot 20 fps in 14 bit or without rolling shutter. Maybe not an issue for you, but clearly inferior to the a1 or z9. The R5 also has viewfinder lag, overheats, has a 30 min record limit, one cf express type b card slot, no vertical grip (maybe a pro for some) poor battery life and all of its good features are lost once the battery charge dips below 60%. You talk about the R5 as if it’s superior, but the fact of the matter is it is not. You just like it’s af better. I’ve shot the a1 and the r5 as I have friends that own them and they aren’t getting shots that I can’t! The fact of the matter is the r5 is showing it’s age, but it’s still a very competent camera and if it’s what you want to shoot it will get you some amazing shots! Oh and about Steve and tinman, you used mark smith, a paid Sony user who literally has paid Sony videos on his KZfaq channel as an example of someone who doesn’t use the z9. Your logic about Steve and tinman is inconsistent with past arguments you have made.
