Tony Northrup covers the latest photo news and photo rumors. First, he discusses the launch of the Apple Vision Pro and whether it will have any impact on the photography & videography community. If it's going to be significant, then we all need to start filming 3D, 180 video and photos, right? But Tony doesn't think it's going to be important to us, so don't waste your money or time.
Next, he discusses the announcement that Canon is the #1 camera manufactuer, via Canon Rumors, which was quickly disputed by Sony on PetaPixel. But is this even good news? Being #1 has traditionally meant that a company tries less hard to win over consumers. You might be better off choosing 2nd or 3rd place over 1st place. Tony also has some updates (via Canon Rumors) about the launches of the Canon R5 Mark II, the Canon R1, and several lenses.
The Fujifilm X100VI launched recently (SDP.io/X100VI) and SonyAlphaRumors reported that it was outselling recent Nikon & Sony cameras by 35-50X... And that data is supported by our own affiliate data. The Fuji is wildly popular because it's a FUN, compact camera.
Nikon Rumors is reporting that Nikon MIGHT BE working on a camera with a global shutter called the Nikon Zh. While this is a "wild rumor", Tony digs into the idea to see if it's feasible and, more importantly, whether it would even be a smart move by Nikon.

I don’t see why Sony wouldn’t sell global shutters to Nikon. The sensor division and camera division are completely different and don’t always have the same interests. Sony Alpha (camera division) might have a contract for that particular sensor in the a9iii, but I don’t see them limiting global shutters altogether.

Unless Sony is having yield issues manufacturing new global shutter sensors the best way to drive down cost is to ramp volume. If Sony Semi plays keep away with best tech they will loose their market position as customers look for new sources of sensors. Totally believable Z9h is over the horizon.

Panoramas on the Vision Pro are a game changer. I can relive where I was and I'm taking far more panoramics now than I ever did after getting the Vision Pro. Also the immersive videos are amazing. While I don't think it will take over the entire world of video and photo content, I believe they do have a place and it can be niche but It is amazing to relive memories and that's partly what photography and the Vision pro is about. So I think you have partly missed on this aspect of the Vision Pro.

As a Nikon shooter i really hope they don't go with a global shutter. I have a z9, and it's great, but i do not need more speed, i need better low light. I'm hoping for a 25ish MPX stacked sensor with very fast redout and bit better lowlight past 12k (i'm a concert/festival photographer so i use that a lot) Even if it is just a Z9 with less mpx, they should easely be able to do 40 fps, aswell as 120fps 6k raw, and if ISO performance in high ISO by atleast 1/2 a stop i'll preorder 2

Considering the fast readout speed of the Z9 and Z8, and the fact that Nikon isn't that popular with sports shooters anyway, I agree that it would make more sense to first update their "mainstream" consumer cameras. As a wildlife shooter in Germany, I see loads of people with the Z8 or DSLR models. If they had better models in the 1000-3000€ price range, I bet a lot of those still holding on to DSLRs would switch to mirrorless. Every day that Nikon isn't competitive in this market, there will be people jumping ship to the competition instead. This should be their #1 priority, in my opinion.

Yea like the other person in the comments I’m still on with a Nikon D810. I would love to get a Z8/Z9 but may opt for the Zf. Nikon needs a better Z7 refresh. Maybe that’s what the Z6iii will be, but the lineup is definitely pretty meh and not nearly as fleshed out as the old FX line.

If a ZH comes out, I'd guess the target is to try to get hybrid shooters to join Nikon. And there is an argument. Z lenses are pretty breathing controlled, and the mount can take any other lenses available - from anyone. The no rolling shutter bit is more important to video. People mix and match lenses much more in the video world.

After the Z6III, Nikon really needs to release a Z500 (a successor to the D500). Nikon has really become the go to for wildlife with all of the relatively light and affordable long telephotos they have released. Now they just need to release a professional APS-C camera to go with them.

@@f.iph7291 Olympus, now OM System, also has great OOC JPEGs. It's one of the reasons I stuck with the camera I have. The SOOC files from the G9ii are lackluster by comparison, and raws require a lot more effort. 90% of the time JPEGs are good enough for most purposes. Sure you get more latitude for recovering shadows or highlights with RAW files, but you also have to really care about that particular image to take the time for it. You should also be aiming for good SOOC images since learning proper exposure technique will improve your photography overall. So JPEGs are a good limitation challenging us to get exposure right in the first place.

Tony, your comments on the Apple Vision Pro, unlike just about all your other opinions, landed with a >clunk< here. I worked at The RAND Corporation during the cutover from the ARPANET's NCP protocol to TCP/IP. I thought at the time that this was a _terrible_ idea. Unique machines, like CMU's C.mmp and CM* were forced off the net. Everyone had to switch over to a protocol that was much harder to maintain, even though the hardware host/IMP interface didn't change (thank God). Obviously, I was dead wrong on this one, because I was blinded by adherence to my own past experience. You're right about one thing: the Apple Vision Pro is not going to revolutionize processing photographs. Three or four iterations down the road, with a vast increase in comfort and resolution, I wouldn't be so sure. At all.

And do you carry around those three monitors to your hotel room? The AVP is part of my work flow now whenever I am remote, and sometimes remote is my couch. They may not be for you, because you cant put up with the weight, but for the photographer that already owns 3 monitors, 2 high end bodies, and more than a handful of great primes, and is not so vain about his appearance, there is a good use case for these. As for the comfort, I find tight ski masks and scuba makes to be more uncomfortable (especially at 60 feet under), but so worth the experience. Same with the AVP. I'm not in the demographic that Apple is aiming for with their Vision Pro, so I don't think I'll bother chiming in on that one. Nikon not only put out new cameras but also opened their Z mount to Sigma. Big win over Canon there. Sony already has a huge lineup of lenses both Sony brand and other makers so they're not worried. Putting out the first global shutter was a neat trick, but only if you're after pro-level bodies. Sony has something for everybody now. The EV-Z10, A6700, A7-III, all great starter camers with loads of lens choices. The only thing they lack is something that competes with the R8 and Z8.

I think these professionals asking about the Apple Vision Pro just want to get their hands on this new toy and justify their purchase to their spouses.. and probably write it off as a business expense 🤭Opening up their mounts to third party lens manufactures is great, but at the end of the day, professionals do a ton of research and end up buying first-party glass anyway. Canon & Sony knows this, but if you close down your mount like Canon, it'll cause bad press and bad social media impact. Every newcomer/enthusiast gets warned to not get into the system with the closed lens mount, don't know when Canon would actually realize this (and that the option of adapting old EF lenses to the RF mount is not sexy enough for new comers). I know a handful of guys including professionals who did a ton of research debating Canon vs Sony and ended up buying into the Sony system, selling their Canon & Nikon gear, and most of them ended up buying at least one G master lens. Sony only has a7III at R8's price range, but IMO the a7III is a really old camera at this point. They badly need a new entry level full-frame camera at that price range, maybe a new "a5 or a6" depending on whatever naming convention that makes sense to them. Also release an a6200 as an update to the a6100, and an a6800 with dual card slots, joystick, faster FPS/buffer to compete with Canon R7.

Nikon seems to be owning the wildlife market, and for that the z9 is more than enough camera, and they have the lens lineup that compliments wildlife. For the sports shooters that are going to be at the olympics, the z9 is still going to get the job done, its an amazing camera with fast AF and 20FPS 45MP RAW. Maybe Nikon will drop another amazing firmware release for the z9 ahead of the games with pre-capure RAW, or up the speed to 30FPS RAW.

Pretty bold of you to just dismiss Apple Vision Pro out of hand. I don't agree with you... but I do agree where it matters. This stuff isn't going to impact photography any time soon. And I don't think it's going to really take off for any use case for at least 5-10 years. I do think these headsets will eventually have an impact though. I'm actually still shocked that Google abandoned the Google Glass. A smaller, lighter product like that has *way* more chance of succeeding than this huge headset. I know it's not VR, but I think if Google had pressed ahead with that product and continued developing it, we'd be living in a quite different space right now. When they can miniaturize an entry-level version of the Apple Vision Pro to the point of being closer to a somewhat-heavy pair of sunglasses... that's when it's going to start to pick up steam. For now it'll be more like the higher end Macbooks. People will increasingly be using them, but still be relatively niche.

If there's even a Z9H in the works, it would make more sense to utilize a lower mp stacked sensor instead of a global. There aren't enough advantages of a global (if any, at this point?) over a stacked with a 3ms readout speed IMO. And it would drive the price of a lower mp Z9H significantly higher than the 45mp Z9. That said, I agree the Z9H is a wild rumor, and it shouldn't take up Nikon's resources - certainly not until the Z6III (7III also?) are out in everyone's hands. After the Z6III, we're more likely to see a Z9II before we ever see a niche Z9H. Just my humble thoughts.

I have three interchangeable Fuji lens camera's and have been somewhat mystified by how popular the single lens f23 x100v is. However, since the announcement of the 6, I have watched numerous YT videos on it and can see its attraction to many including keen photographers mainly due to its pocketable size and feature packed system. No, I haven't ordered one, I don't need one but I have been close as I would like one just for the convenience. If the suggested orders are correct anybody ordering now could be in for a long wait. I don't know whether it true but I read there are orders in China for 1M . I aslo read that production is 15k per month. Fuji certainly seem to have another massive winner on their hands if production can keep pace with demand.

Nikon should develop a compact FX, ideally with interchangeable lenses. They could then compete against the A7Cii-R or Fuji's offerings in the market.

I doubt Sony would have any issues selling a global shutter to Nikon. At the same time, I don't know that I want a global shutter vs a higher megapixel sensor. Certainly 24MP is plenty for most work, but I'd rather have a 45+MP camera for large prints, and even pixel shift for those special photos. Unless I move into video, I don't think global shutter will matter that much to me. Even the dog agility practice shots I've done have been fine without it.

I agreed with your comments about the Apple Vision Pro. However, there is one other item that you did not mention. Apple is now producing video content (movies, etc.). It they can use that as the "killer app" to drive the need for this product, then it may stimulate enough sales of the Vision Pro to become a standard in the industry and then spread into other avenues and apps, like photo- or video- editing. And it is Apple. Remember there were already smart phones on the market when the iPhone was introduced.

i think Sony should return production the 42MP full frame Sensor and bring it back with a global shutter. many of us don't want to let go of that amazing sensor when the A7R III s come to the end of their service lives. we can trade the high frame rates for lowers ISOs for our landscaspes, and 15 FPS will be more than enough for those of us with a line up of third party lenses as well. This means means we will be able to take panning shots without distortion, and still be able to print them large, since we still have the megapixels.

Back when the Z9 came out I didn’t see Sony having an equivalent sensor that Nikon simply purchased and tweaked to their needs. If Sony had a sensor that was as fast as the one in the Z9, and now in the Z8, they would likely have put it in one of their own cameras before Nikon. So, maybe Nikon gets most of their sensors that are designed and manufactured by Sony but I think for their high-end bodies, Nikon designs their own sensors and possibly has them manufactured by Sony. I think that will be the case with the Z9H, or whatever they call it, and it will best Sony’s sensor and specs in some ways and maybe even at a lower price.

Sony had a very fast sensors in the A1 and the A9's... they chose the readout speeds maybe to optimize some other factor, giving up a ms or 2 in scan rate. Nikon simply chose the 1-2 ms faster scan rate at the expense of some other spec. Sony makes the Nikon Sensors... I'm sure division of Sony that makes the chips has a number of factors they can modify for a product run, or scan rate, clock speeds, etc. etc. are simply set in firmware...

@@TonyAndChelsea So, was the loss of 1 or 2 ms in scan rate enough to require a mechanical shutter in the A1? Maybe it was and/or they wanted to improve the flash sync speed so that was the major reason for including one where Nikon chose to go fully electronic.
@dcd
@dcd 2 ай бұрын
@@glennn.3464 Sony may have simply chosen to keep the mechanical shutter to make sure there was an option to eliminate banding in certain situations knowing they had a global shutter coming that would change the game anyway in the next generation. Nikon chose to live with the rare banding, scoreboard / led update issues and jump a little early for the press and first mover PR... and like I mentioned, the 1-2 ms may have been simply a choice of DR, Signal to noise, etc. tradeoffs that each decided to push the [virtual] sliders one way or another slightly... or like @TonyAndChelsea mentioned, simply the timing to read a few extra lines for the full 50mpx... (but that 2ms seems a lot more than time than it should proportionally take to read those few extra lines).

Nikon hasn't updated their Z50, which was announced in 2019. Their Z6 II and Z7 II were announced in 2020. They have more important things to do than to work on a new sports camera. In addition, "global shutter comes with an image quality cost". I doubt that either Nikon or Canon want that in a sports camera.

The whole 'will Sony sell Nikon sensors' is a bit silly. It ignores the fact that the 'Sony' that makes sensors is not the same company as the 'Sony' that makes sensors. Global shutter sensors are not new, and Sony Semiconductor sells them to loads of companies. The real question to ask is whether Sony imaging sees enough sales in the A9 III to justify the R&D spend on an exclusive sensor for their use. I would guess that the likely answer is 'no'. Very likely the sensor was developed for scientific/technical markets - for which there is a big demand for GS sensors, and Sony Imaging decided to put it in a photographic camera, and that Nikon can make that decision too, if it wants to. The truth is there is a real loss in adding GS (reduced overall IQ and DR) and that makes a GS camera very specialist - so why would Nikon not use it if they think there's a market.

If Nikon puts their energy into being the full frame company that DOESN'T over- charge or abandon their customers with products and firmware updates, then they'll do just fine. People know when they're being exploited and they eventually punish the companies doing it.

Keep in mind that NR, among many Rumor sites and KZfaq channels, also get things wrong from time to time. I don't doubt a ZH but I do doubt the global shutter. My guess is that it's possible they may have a prototype global shutter for an updated Z9 but I don't think they will have this for any new cameras. Plus Sony's own global shutter design has some potential drawbacks to it that will need to be worked out, and Nikon isn't exactly the company known for taking risks (at least, since the Z series has been released), so I doubt the global shutter thing. UNLESS it has a 45MP sensor like the Z8/Z9 but to achieve global status, it reads only a portion of the sensor really fast (say 24MP) thus the "high speed" part of it. So you could get really two different routes you can take. You can get a full 45MP but it would not be global shutter type (it would be the same as it is now, just a shutterless design) or you can get global-shutter-like results but at a cropped level and I think this could be done for example if the processor only reads say the middle 50% of rows on the sensor, so it reads basically 22 or even 24MP of the center of the sensor and ignores the rest (doesn't read them or even activate those photo sites). Personally I think they need to get the Z6 III out before they do anything else. But either way, I personally wouldn't be buying a Zh anyway, since I mostly shoot landscapes and travel photography, with the occasional portrait or wildlife shoots, but nothing that really demands a global shutter or high-speed shooting beyond what the Z8 or Z9 can already offer.

two things don't match for the Z9H : - First is the fact that Sony doesn't sell their top of the line stuff to their competitors in the camera market even if they buy their sensors. That's why we haven't seen any camera with the same 33MP sensor as the A7IV, or any camera with the same 50MP sensor as the A1. They just don't offer it on the market. One "exception" to this would be the 61MP sensor, but that one is ike 5 years old at this point and besides the Sigma FP-L which wouldn't have really made any competition to the A7RIV or RV, we only started to see it last year... In Leica cameras which still don't compete with Sony. It's SUPER unlikely that Sony would put that global shutter on the market right now. The A9III just dropped. - Second is that exception made of the Z5, every Z camera uses a Nikon designed sensor. Not a Sony design that Nikon tweaked, but a full on Nikon made design that Sony Semiconductors make for them. That's true of the 24.5MP sensor in the Z6/D780/Z6II/Zf, that's true of the 45MP sensor in the D850/Z7/Z7II, that's true of the 20.9 APSC sensor in the D500/Z50/Z30/Zfc and that's of course true of the 45MP stacked in the Z8 and Z9 (which is only a copy of the Z7 sensor, only now it is stacked..). Bottom line : Nikon would NOT use a full on Sony design in their cameras. They'd use a Nikon design. Now it is possible that they made a global shutter design and made Sony Semiconductor manufacture it. But imho it's very unlikely.

Although I agree Nikon should focus on the lower end cameras, some interviews with Nikon executives in recent years made clear their will to increase profits by selling more to enthusiasts and pros. Based on that I think they should invest in a Z9H. The Z6III is rumored to be ready for launch, so their engineers are "free" to make a Z9H. It seems they won't be updating their Z APS-C bodies anytime soon.

I just had the A9 in my hands. The global shutter is great but has its shortcomes. To get the peak of the flash in the short shutterspeed, you have to adjust the moment in camera. If you change the shutterspeed from 1/8000 to 1/2000 of a second ( to get some of the background ) , the part flashlight that the flash , with the same settings, puts trough the same aperture on the sensor , wil be much more ( can be 2/3 stop ). So.. no flexibility, as you know on lower shutterspeeds. But..Flashing above 1/250th without losing all the power by hss is great.. That's for sure. There will be updates i guess. I think I will wait for Nikon's answer with the build in Sony global shutters. They are surely going to use them... GS will be the future. Let Nikon please bet on both horses. Professional market and the consumer market.

Seemingly they intend to provide customers - regular & cost free firmware updates. Beyond those updates to fix bugs, they are providing value added features for significant upgrades to the bodies. The big 3 have always steered us to the next model upgrade - every 3 years or so. This new Nikon model, if so, will shake up this industry.

Photographer's dilemma: to make money on social media you have to appeal to people who care so little about photography that they can't be bothered holding their phones in landscape mode... for landscapes. As for the Z9H, I already find 20fps on my Z9 too high, even for birds in flight, because I get sick of going through so many photos, except in the MOST awesome situations. For sports, sure, but I'd be surprised if wildlife photographers want that many FPS while sacrificing the ability to heavily crop with high mps.

Completely agree with Tony regarding Nikon. Nikon, please listen...the internet and the socials contain very loud Z6 and Z7 voices. They invade other topics with their demands and shopping lists. You already have them as customers. Steer aside. Look for people who used to be Nikon customers and now are not. Like me. I went to art college in the 80's. My daughter just left college herself. My first camera was an FM2. Currently using a Df and full range of AIS glass. My daughter has a Fuji. For the sake of your company market share, you need to move the people demanding MASP dials out of your company. Clearly they do not listen to advice. They need to move. You put an 'A' on the shutter dial and another 'A' on a clearly visible and usable aperture ring. No MASP. Next, do not treat your retro themed cameras like a limited edition Disney DVD. On sale now then vanishes for decades. Consumers want to see a roadmap around the Zf, I need to know it's getting a follow up. A follow up with no MASP dial, and lenses that look like AIS glass. That last sentence, that is why Fuji are destroying you right now. The dials are intuitive and they make retro lenses that match the retro cameras.
