Maya's matches are always exciting. It's like she always has a laps of concentration but never gives up and battles back. These kids are so flexible it's almost like watching a different sport when they try and put combinations together and their opponent just bends.

Maya has a skill to reverse position. She pulls that "call an ambulance but not for me" kind of maneuver at 4:07 . I'm absolutely a fan of hers because she just wins, cold and calculated.

Meanness? She seems very technical and determined. Meanness? No.

I been watching men’s wrestling and running for years. As I have done both. Utube algorithm has recently been giving me female versions of my fav sports. It is so interesting to see the different approaches. I never thought I would enjoy watching it. The ladies seem to be more technical which is really cool.

I wish our Girls division had more on the team when my daughters were in Middle school back in mid-2000's. Most of their matches would get canceled because not enough participation. Girls wrestling boys was out of the question.

Sorry for being an armchair coach… but Maya would be better served by not riding her opponent perpendicular. 90 degrees always, affords the ability to collapse the opponent’s elbow and pull the waist into you, spinning 180 degrees to the other side and pinning. It happens so often that perpendicular riders get turned themselves onto their back. The weight of one’s body on the back of an opponent may tire the opponent out slightly, but likely the ref will call both to their feet. In a ‘missed’ takedown attempt, keep your head up and attempt to spin to the side, with a low profile. Both hands locked together on a leg ensure a better chance of driving the sprawled opponent into a takedown situation. What great promise with her. Great natural ability! 👏

that waving-off sweat and heat between rounds seems like cheating if you ask me, even when both teams are doing it. if you're over heating because you can't manage your strength, you'll lose. endurance is a big part of this sport.

Just out of interest, if the team knows they are going to have to come out and fan the competitor at half time, why don't they bring fans or Ice packs or something specifically designed for the task. They always seem to wave whatever clothing they found kicking around like they didn't expect that they would have to be helping out their team mate at half time. Always seems a little under prepared from an outsiders perspective.

Why did the ref check their heads at the beginning?
@MidwestWrestle8 ай бұрын
To check for illegal oily or greasy substances.
@Elkmany8 ай бұрын
@@MidwestWrestle what are these for example?
@MidwestWrestle8 ай бұрын
@@Elkmany Applying oily or greasy substances to one's own skin is considered cheating because it makes it difficult for the opponent to use normal wrestling holds and maneuvers by making the skin slippery

Have the rules for freestyle wrestling changed? Do they no longer put wrestlers in that position where one is on all fours and the other just on top? That's the way I wrestled back in the day.
@MidwestWrestle2 ай бұрын
Freestyle does have a position called ordered par terre, but it's not a standard position... it's used to penalize negative wrestling (passivity). Is there any chance you might be thinking of folkstyle wrestling? www.indeewrestling.com/folkstyle-wrestling-rules/
@jeremybr20202 ай бұрын
@@MidwestWrestle OK, so I wrestled in high school, back in 1992 to 1993 in Texas. It's been a while obviously, but if memory serves, after the first period, the one losing in points was the one to be on all fours when they would start off. It definitely wasn't a passivity penalty kind of thing. Now maybe it wasn't called freestyle, but possibly collegiate style wrestling. I'm certain it wasn't called folkstyle wrestling. Never even heard of that style.
@MidwestWrestle2 ай бұрын
@@jeremybr2020 Got it now. The style wrestled in American schools is officially knows as collegiate style, but that name is considered by many to be too formal, and so instead most people call it by it's more colloquial name, folkstyle. Under current rules (which have been modified quite a bit since the early 90s), the first period begins with both wrestlers on their feet, after which the referee flips a disc and the winner of the toss can choose top (offensive position), bottom (defensive position), neutral, or defer the choice to the third period, giving the second period choice to the opponent. This channel primarily focuses on folkstyle (collegiate style) since that is the dominant style in the USA, but occasionally I get the opportunity to cover freestyle as well (like the match in this video). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collegiate_wrestling

At least this is a more even competition than when girls this age wrestle boys. The poor boys are terrified they'll be accused of 'inappropriately touching' the girls, and that gives the girls an unfair advantage.
