When Prince praises the production of your album and then you tour with Bowie, it shows that you must know what you're doing!
@kevsim70

I went to that concert, actually. Much to my great disappointment, Bowie was *awful*. I had been really hyped for it, too, since Bowie was obviously a legend. NIN's set was fine, though nothing insanely special (unlike their show for the actual Downward Spiral tour, which WAS). The duets between the two of them were fine, too. But Bowie was basically unlistenable. To this day after 35 years of going to concerts, that remains the *only* show I've walked out from early. The final straw for me and my friends was when someone near us in the crowd started singing the theme to "The Love Boat", and it *matched* what Bowie was doing... lol.

@@kevsim70 sad to hear that's how you thought of it. I personally loved their performances together even if sometimes David was slightly off. He was almost 50 after decades of singing routinely after all. Their tour together has some of my favorite performances of NIN songs live, like Hurt.

The live version is basically the b-side 'All The Pigs, All Lined Up' . I will say I love Reznor's mastery of the "wall of noise" sound. Especially in his later stuff, he just seems to fill every millimeter of the composition with sound, and still gets it to work. He usually has some thread to follow in the song, that you can just hang on to when you're met with this wall and you're being dragged along.

He recorded his own drum samples, in different rooms of the tate house, and loaded them up into an akai sampler. Lots of lots of akai, samples from movies and processed synths and stuff. They were big on that. Bass on this track was a minimoog, guitars processed in turbosynth with digital distortion, layers upon layers and layers, each with different frequency bands craved out. Hes a genius

I recall an old interview where he said they made all their own custom drum samples for this record , by recording drums in mono in the bathroom and garage of the house they rented and then used them in the Akai rack mount samplers of the time . They were also known to post process the guitars through TurboSynth in old Pro Tools systems fronted by studio vision.

This whole album is a lyrical and sonic masterpiece. Beautiful and ugly in equal measure it is just raw and uncensored emotional pain. The album follows a man loosing his sanity and "becoming" his dark alter ego. Really worth the listen from song 1 to 14. The main single from this album- Closer, is sooooooo not radio friendly (lyrically) yet somehow blew up as a single. And I’ve seen him talk about when he wrote it that he sort of felt bad because he couldn’t make a radio single work for the album lol. So even he was shocked with its success. So it’s interesting you touched on that aspect of THIS song. I’m sure you’ve heard Closer, but it would be cool to dissect it here regardless because it has so much layering and so many pieces of different composition….hmmm how to describe it what I’m trying to say…if the song was a house it would have many rooms.

IIRC Trent generally recorded his own sounds to dub and layer to make the background industrial noise. The early albums are full of anger and the later chill out a bit. To some extent they sound like a heavier precursor to Stomp and Blue Man Group. A lot of his work for the past two decades has been producing and composing. Many soundtracks and other bands' albums. The first soundtrack he did, Quake 2 IIRC, I had playing in my car for months. Just had to be on my toes to skip the first track which had the game data.

Highly recommend watching the Sydney 4K on stage recording of this by Rob Sheridan, the sound is off the charts and the energy from an older Trent is other worldly. Also Ilan Rubin, who’s Trent’s current drummer is literally a “grohl, Bonham, Copeland hybrid and his drum sound uses your body as a literal cavity for the sound. If a phrase sums it up, “it’s just fucking epic” Do it, for you.

This album dropped during my junior year of high school. All this time, I've never noticed that the sound in the right channel during the four-on-the-floor section isn't lined up rhythmically with everything else. I certainly felt the unease such a juxtaposition is meant to evoke -- I just couldn't figure out why... Also, is that a whammy bar on your keyboard?

Watching your face as you listen is entertainment enough :) By the way, since I can't see anyone else in the comments who clarified the meter in the heavier sections (I hesitate to call them "verses" 'cause it doesn't really match that typical verse/chorus/etc song structure completely) just about everything is following a pattern with three bars of 7/8 and then one bar of 4/4 (or 8/8, I suppose).

I remember when this came out. It was most definitely a single, they even had a video that played on MTV

Yeah, back in about 89 I started listening to NIN with their first radio single of 'Down In It', and was hooked since. I also loved the fact of their albums being labeled with HALO 1 - 34. On the side of the discs and videos. I had the entire collection and really haven't heard a bad song from them. You can tell how Trent and the others matured over the years, and when they finally started releasing music as "open source" and letting people experiment was when I really had admiration for them.

Aw geebz, I’m really hoping you feel better soon, man. And I’m really hoping you’ll revisit Between The Buried And Me one last time before taking the break. Their song “Disease, Injury, Madness” will not disappoint. 👌🥺

I recommend: "Jay walking backwards" from "The Number 12 looks like you", very unusuall arrangement and epic ending. melts my face every time.

Trent said they use Moog mostly but I've seen a set where they sequence with double Make Noise modules

I think at the time of the recording, Trent was using Kurzweil keyboards a lot. I had a K2VXS at one point and it was loaded with tons of factory presets that were right off of "The Downward Spiral". I think there were a couple from "Pretty Hate Machine", too. Those were some really deep sound producing machines. You could even play pong on them!

Music is a tool to bring us back. It gives me unprecedented energy when I need it. Those mosh pit energy sessions really stuck.

If you really want to delve into some sonic mastery, I would check out the studio version of the song Wish from the Broken EP. It was recorded at a time when Trent was absolutely furious at his record label, and the rage is evident in the sonic bombardment throughout the track. Also, there is some incredibly cool guitar engineering on the track that makes it impossible to truly duplicate live.

It's an amazing song and along with Closer and Hurt from this album it was what made me check out NIN and later NIN became my favourite band. I think you would enjoy some cuts off of Year Zero in terms of engineering, but there are so many great songs to choose from on that one so I couldn't recommend just one. And as always here is my humble request that one day we might see Svefn-g-Englar by Sigur Rós on your channel

I really dig your videos man! Nine Inch Nails - "The Downward Spiral" is a masterpiece of an album! This is also the album where the song "Hurt" that Johnny Cash famously covered is from.

This is actually the ONE song that Trent had live drums that he played on. He was testing out a new kick drum mic, and liked what he was messing around with enough to use. The synth fry you mentioned in the background to me sounds like he's sampled some various screams and is using that. There's actually a remix of one of his songs that uses Trent's vocals on a synth.

I saw this video premiere, I believe on 120 minutes, on MTV in 1994. It was the first single off the album. Changed the entire course of my musical interests in one video/song.

Early NIN makes more sense when you think of it as rave music. Techno was always a part of the sound.
