"The ability to pull emotions from you with so little" - yes! I love seeing Trent getting recognition as a composer. I just listened to the Gone Girl score, and damn, such an interesting timbre pallet they pulled from with some truly beautiful moments. You might like it as a composer yourself. Great video Geebz!

You sound like as big a fan as me mate. I’m a musician thanks to Pretty Hate Machine. Terrible Lie and Sin was the first double A side vinyl I heard in 1989. Since then every new album has been a “I know where I was when” day. And I’ve got tickets for the Eden Project in June in the U.K. It’s a 700 mile drive so I’m hiring a Merc and doing the surf weekend in North Devon afterwards. Being a hard drug addict I’ve not been on a holiday for 30 fucking years. Now I’m clean the hope of life returned. Are you a musician? Peace brother.

This album, damn. What an album. For context, this album was a concept album based in a close, but alternate reality wherein the surveillance state had become dystopian, there was resistance fighting against them. At the same time, there were sightings of hands reaching down from the sky. The album release was an alternate reality game in its own right as Schism46 has said in the comments. But linked to this dripping of information about the "reality" were a series of scavenger hunts with USB drives being left containing further information and copies of some of the singles. Additionally, Trent was playing with weird tech at some of the concerts. I saw them in Manchester (UK) prior to the album being released and he was using something to allow him to direct sound to small areas of the crowd passing on messages and ultimately one concert goer received a message which directed them to one of the USB drives. The album, and everything to do with it was just this huge immersive experience!

I remember when I first took the CD out of the CD player (remember those 😅) it had changed colour to reveal some message or code. That was pretty trippy at the time! Also finding out that one of the songs revealed the "hand" from the cover when shown through a spectrogram was pretty cool - whoever figured that out first must've been having their mind blown!

I loved the way he released this album, as you can see my profile pic is the art is resistance flag. I followed it from the very beginning, checking echoingthesound forums everyday and still have the dog tags that a group made with my username on the list and I'm unfortunately deceased. Was so cool to see all the detail that went into it, between the street art, hidden USB drives, etc.

First time I put Year Zero in my CD player, I thought I’d broken the disc. Turned out the face of the disc is coated in a heat sensitive paint; changing from black to white. The whole marketing concept behind the album was incredible; from the viral marketing, to the USBs left at venues & the awesome four song concert / piece of performance art which ended with ‘riot police’ raiding the show.

I CANT BELIEVE you mentioned Peter Gabriel!!! Holy smokes, I've been saying this for years. Trent seems to share some sort of kindred sensibilities with Peter Gabriel. I have never known how to explain it exactly. NIN and Trent have been the soundtrack of my life since 1994. It feels to me like Trent looks at the world through Jungian archtypical eyes -- I don't know how to explain it so I won't keep trying. I love your channel, glad I found it.

Hey Geebz! I have been watching your videos for quite awhile now. I love that you became such a Maynard fan and watching you go through his different bands. That being said NIN has also been one of my favorite bands. Trent just has this special touch, whether it is angry, calm, or more of like a radio friendly pop style. I would absolutely love it if you spent more time reacting to Trent Reznor's music like you did with Maynard. I truly believe that if you did you would find a whole new fan base to join in what we have all been watching for some time now. You are awesome and I want to say thank you for sharing your thoughts on everything you listen to. I am still here and will continue to be here as long as you are! Thanks! What timing for you to bring this song and album back out. I'm a huge NIN fan with them being #1 in my books for the last 20+ years. I've always enjoyed this album but I feel like it's talking in a completely different and pertinent way these days in light of current world affairs. Made me break it back out for a good solid listen after a while. I love what he did with this album and what the goal was. The Fragile I personally feel is his best album as a whole work where he really developed a full experience. Year Zero tells such a story and is such a commentary on us as humans told in music that is just fantastic.

I/We’ve been spoiled by so much crazy metal music with weird time signatures and cutting edge sounds, that coming back to NIN (even as a huge fan) seems so tame and basic in comparison. But goddamn does Trent know how to compose some beautiful melodies and create the best moods.

Hey, if you’re still up for listening to Gojira, you should definitely check out Low Lands. The drummer and singer are brothers, and their mother passed away shortly before the album’s release, and Low Lands is almost like a message to her spirit. It’s seriously beautiful.

The Year Zero album still scares the crap out of me to this day. SOOOO much to get into with this one.

Like others have said, Year Zero is a concept album and it reflects world politics around the time it was released (George W. Bush presidency, Afghanistan, Iraq) even though the idea is a parallel dystopian reality. Wonderful choice, but as with any NIN album, I gotta say--the album is a solid ride from start to finish, and in the context of the entire album this is one hell of a closer.

Hey mate. Seeming as I noticed you enjoy Karnivool, check out another Aussie prog band "Cog". They are an amazing 3 piece that are not well known outside of Australia, but should be. They were really big here in the mid 2000's. Lots of funky time signatures and really unique vocalist. The released some new singles over the last couple of years, check out my favourite track from their newer stuff called "The Middle" - link here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrZmgdKEy7mnlnU.html

The marketing campaign on tour before they dropped this album hiding the zip drives in bathrooms the fake websites it was a pure masterpiece only concept album better than this to me is downward spiral by him and it’s a close call

yikes who recommended this one. Might as well have done The Day the World Went Away. Anything from Fragile, Reznor recycled the piano parts throughout the album & ones after (in a good way, almost concept album way). Even then, the piano in that album comes from a few alterations using Something I Can Never Have as a skeleton. But I'd not pick from this album to get reactions from due to the tepid reaction I had for it.

yes it is a place to stop as the song shifts but a terrible place to stop cause you lose the release of the build up that brings all those goosebumps lol

Such a lost work of art this album was at the time … a near term victim of the transition of technology and social political elements … Many of us owned this album but never shared how much we loved it, at least around here, there were no live shows to champion that love!! So funny that the generational social cycle is already coming back around from when this was released and the themes are very much in tune with current global events and likely events to come!

I've never been a big fan of NIN. This whole song seems a bit like spoken word over basic keys with a synthetic drum pattern and some soundscape in the background. It's not a composition to me; and that doesn't mean it's bad. It's so simple; but to me it's not even a real instrumental background except for the piano. It's genius in it's own way, but not my cup of tea.
