lol, reading the comments, must be something wrong with me, i'm 61, heard all the covers and original of this song ... when ... they came out and I"m even talking about her cover on the Ecstasy record (chit) ... my god, you people have no idea what you are experiencing here ... best version ever, hands down ... Billy Liesegang and Karl Rucker ... unbelievable ... this is how she should have done this on the record ... how this song should be played ...

This song is my dad's favorite. He passed in 1992 and the original was played at his funeral along with other tunes he liked. He would have loved Nina's version.

You are so correct!!! When I was in college, I worked as a DJ at my college's radio station all 4 years, and served as Music Director my Junior and Senior years. I made sure to play Nina Hagen constantly, and made sure other DJ's followed suit. However,, I NEVER heard Nina Hagen on any commercial radio station! Heck almost never heard her on any college, non-profit radio station The biggest issue I see is that her early albums/singles were in German, and although I played ""TV-Glotzer"" and ""Wie leben immer" to death, the US, at the time, wasn't reading to accept non-English songs. But besides being a great singer/entertainer - how many artists were more attractive than Nina? Considering the mindset of that era (late 1970's*early 1980's) - ot was the attractive female artists who were promoted. Why was Nina denied?

@@billsager5634 there is a TV show that was on public access in New York City called On Patrol. Nina said that the man who was in charge of her career did not like her because she wore too much make up. His name was Alan Leavy. He was instrumental in holding up her American record deal.

Makeup galor! Maybe Nina Hagen was a tad too avant garde for American tatses, but that :make up" line is pure BS,

Probably because the song is not really about some Byzantine proclamation - i.e. "Nicene Creed" it just mentions a Spirit in the Sky and Jesus.....you know all that magicy stuff is just put in to placate the raving made Greek Bishops in Constantine's Council.......Yea and Mary was a virgin......just like in all the older versions of god men.....I wish people would really read some books about history....

Madonna, Cindi Lauper, Lady Gaga, all Nina Hagen wanna be's !! None of them can hold a candle to her style or creativity. She's had more looks in a month then they've had in their careers. And her band is totally under rated for straight up musicianship. I got introduced to Nunsex Munkrock in 1982 and I've loved her ever since.

Hey! Has anyone ever seen the alleged official video to Nina's cover of Spirit in the Sky? I only heard it existed when she mentioned, on the David Letterman show (the clip is here on KZfaq), that she'd been in Spain and Greece filming it. I wonder if it was actually produced/released? Was it the English version, or the German one from "Exstase"? I like the latter a little better, especially at the very end when Nina sneezes, and then says, in a more masculine voice, "Gesundheit".

Many people comment on the influence that her charisma has had on many artists but the one I think about most is Mexico's naughty girl from the late 80"s early 90's Gloria Trevi. Riding the microphone stand and crucifix especially. This was a wonderful rendition and amazing to watch. I think Norman Greenbaum would be proud.
