Welcome to Houdini Is Hip! This is part 4 of the series. In this series, we are going to be looking at how to use Houdini to create incredible 3D graphics and effects. Not only will we be looking at full CG applications for it, but also at how we can use Houdini for adding VFX elements to live action plates.
In this part, we are looking at how to render inside of Houdini using its native renderer - Karma.

Want to say thank you for making revision of the old tutorial series. Been wanting to go through your old series and saw your comment of this series. Im only starting to learn Houdini. Getting this type of quality tutorial videos from you feels illegal honestly. Also, would you please consider making a KZfaq playlist of this new series?

I'm not sure if you know what you're doing here...: You pave the way for so many artists and creative minds. People like me who already have experience and are simply switching from other programs like C4D or complete newbies. Thank you very much for your knowledge and experience. Super clearly explained!

Great work, you are surely one of the best teachers I've ever seen, everything is so well organized and the logic behind the software, which had always confused me so much is so clearly presented that it's almost tangible, thank you so much for the excellent courses!

Can't tell you how much I appreciate your work on this course. You have a fantastic teaching style. I have been using C4d for going on 20 years for broadcast / advertising work using Turbulence FD / Realflow / Xparticles being my go to's. All that time in and i'm extremely comfortable with it. Lately though I have been wanting more control and more fidelity to simulations. I have stopped and started trying to learn Houdini at least 6 times over the past couple of years. I feel like I understand a lot of random parts of Houdini from taking Steve Knippings Applied Houdini courses and even a couple through Rebel but this is the first time I feel like I have a better overall feeling of Houdini as a whole and the bits and pieces that have been missing are really filled in with what you have teaching in this course. Great work - I really love what you have done here.

I really like your tutorials. You explain not what the settings are for but how and why. so many just say click here for this effect and play with it. you are clear and concise. do you plan on more tutorial series? I would pay for a good in depth tutorial series. where is link to your discord channel?

Hi! Thanks for the great comment. Currently, we are looking at releasing a full paid series. However, that won't be done for a while. I'd recommend Applied Houdini if you haven't checked it out already. Steven Knipping is an incredible teacher, and his videos only require a fairly basic understanding of houdini

Hey man. Seriously enjoying the series so far. Definitely helping me along my journey to learning houdini. I have an issue with the coconut and Karma though. In the Karma viewport, the coconuts don't show up in render. I dove into the coconut geo node and set the display flag on each node down the node tree and each of them work right up until the copy to points node. Any idea why it would do that?

To begin with, I want to thank you for this outstanding series and for sharing your knowledge, it is truly highly appreciated. I have a couple of questions, hope you have the time to answer them. 1- is this series still being recorded part by part, or is there a way to purchase the the entire course now? 2- Are you gonna cover footage tracking (hopefully done in blender) and exporting the camera track to Houdini, in which we can apply several simulations, learn how to texture from camera projection and the entire workflow? 3- will you cover exporting let's say heavy rbd simulations to blender, in case we want to continue there? 4- finally, could you maybe quickly share how I can make the floor just a shadow catcher, so I can render the donut with shadows but on a fully transparent background. Again, you efforts are truly helpful and appreciated. Hope to hear back from you on the above questions.
@NineBetween

Hey! Thank you so much. I appreciate the kind words. To answer your questions: 1. They are recorded part by part. However, the release frequency should be increasing now that we're less busy with other projects. 2. We're going to be looking at importing cameras in the next part. It won't be from blender, but there will be a good carryover of skills that can easily be applied to blender. 3. Again, we won't really be leaving Houdini, but I'll be showing how to export sequences for rendering in other software using alembic/fbx/usd. 4. We'll be looking at that in the next part. If you're interested in trying it out now, take a look at the objects tab of the Karma render node. There are options for rendering as phantom or matte. If you export a shadow pass with the floor as a phantom, I believe it will work. I'll explain it properly in the next video. I hope that answers your questions. These next parts should be a lot more fun now that the basics are out of the way. Thanks again for watching!

I noticed that when you said "We can change the intensity of this light..." you actually adjusted the exposure setting for that light (as opposed to the intensity setting). I've seen other tutorials do the same. Is there a reason to change the exposure instead of the intensity setting on lights?
@NineBetween
@NineBetween Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I've found that in terms of general, everyday use, there's no difference. However, technically, intensity is the actual brightness of the light, and exposure is how much of that light enters the camera. As far as I know, exposure can be represented with a logarithmic function of intensity that doubles or halves the relative intensity by every change of 1 f-stop of exposure. Ie. Increase exposure by 1, intensity doubles, decrease it by 1, intensity halves. In summary, it's some technical thing that I don't really fully understand😂
@RobertWEaston
@RobertWEaston Жыл бұрын
@@NineBetween Thanks for the honest answer. I appreciate it! What you said is pretty much what I figured. I guess I'll stick with adjusting the light exposures, for now, to align with the HIP crowd.
@NineBetween
@NineBetween Жыл бұрын
Haha, no problem. It shouldn't cause any issues for you. It's just good to know that there is a difference between them. Either way, you could always end up with the same look even if you balance the two settings differently.
