I get why that lesbian personally has an issue, but the term partner was picked to be ambiguous so that people didn't have to out themselves. There was a concerted effort to get straight people to say "partner" so when gay people did it they wouldn't have a neon sign of otherness above their heads

Saying partner is also helpful for ppl who don’t want to be judged for not being married yet. I love the term.

In my community we use partner in order to normalize the term.

I use partner? My boyfriend and I didn't get married, but have a child and have been together for almost 10yrs. So... I just say, "partner" and I'm not entirely sure why. I think it's because boyfriend doesn't sound right? And although we might as well be, we're not technically married. I think it's more that we're equal and leverage the weight in the relationship well, so he is my literal partner? It just sounds right. I don't know!

I’ve been told “partner” is a more inclusive term. If you only reserve the term for the gay community why not just say your girlfriend or wife? I think of it as ambiguous on purpose and it’s not ambiguous if only gays can use it.

as a gay woman, it feels very odd to head a person who is in a straight relationship say it. it feels like you’re attempting to make your normal relationship seem more special. it’s for gay people

@@abbyliz3 Maybe there needs to be a new term. There really isn't one for a straight couple whose relationship's age and commitment level is far beyond "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" but aren't married, and it's an increasingly common arrangement. I'm in that camp and have used "partner" now and then in reference to my hetero relationship (have been together 13 years, sharing space and assets, with no intention of marriage but also with the intention to grow old together) honestly because it fits and because it's what I grew up hearing for that specific arrangement. My mom is gay and I grew up almost exclusively around gay couples in "partnerships". I guess growing up in the community but not really being a part of it can be confusing. But I would like a new word because I don't want to even be annoying, let alone insensitive. I just Googled some terms. "Spouse" is apparently marriage-specific. "Significant other" is clunky and I hate it. "Companion" sounds like a pet. Hmm. I'll have to keep thinking.

Talk about forced subscriptions, I have never signed up for Amazon prime yet I’m paying for it monthly! I guess a year ago when I ordered some thing they had already checked off a box that you have to uncheck so that you’re not accidentally subscribed to Amazon prime. I keep calling them to cancel it, and they keep charging me every month anyway! 🤬

By the way, my newly driving son was waved to go exiting a business and promptly got hit by another oncoming car. Thank goodness he was fine after but it is also illegal in some places to wave people on in traffic.

This is news to me! As a 6ft tall woman with short hair who rarely wears makeup, I'm occasionally a ninja woman. I always took "partner" to mean same-sex couples, but was taught by my company's DEI program that I should say "spouse" or "partner" instead of "husband" or "boyfriend" to signal that I'm an ally. Is that just nonsense???

i’ve actually had it with gays that have that take on the word!!!! i absolutely get where she’s coming from, us lgbts deserve our claiming of things. but, the effort to include straight people in using ‘partner’ has actually been much safer and easier for gay people. at least i’ve noticed this. it helps keep things ambiguous annnndd helps break the gender nonsense in general

There’s nothing wrong with a mom staying for a playdate. Keep in mind that thousands of children are touched by some your creepy husbands, so SMART parents never drop their kids off at anyone’s house alone. Many of you know your husbands and sons are creeps too.
