Japan Travel Guide: Ashikaga, Tochigi has more temples than Kamakura! And I visited some that should not be missed!
00:55 Gyodosan Joinji Temple
goo.gl/maps/Gurq4DashRx3PmSu8
The temple is called the ‘Koyasan of Kanto’ and is built in the mountains surrounded by steep cliffs. It is said to have been founded by Gyoki Shonin in 714 and flourished as a place of mountain temple worship. The view from the Seishin-tei tea house on top of the cliff walls has been depicted in Hokusai’s ‘Hanging-cloud Bridge’. Designated as the prefecture’s first scenic spot in 1975.
Approximately 10 minutes from Ashikaga Interchange on the Kita Kanto Expressway
Approximately 30 minutes from Ota Kiryu Interchange on the Kita Kanto Expressway
Approximately 40 minutes from Sano Fujioka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway
Approximately a 40 walk from ‘Gyodosan’ stop on the Ashikaga city bus Gyodo bus route.
04:25 Chorin-ji Temple
goo.gl/maps/9cMZPbTSDZrFSMWx6
This friendly temple has a coffee shop that operates twice a week at no set schedule between 10-12am.
It is famous for its autumn leaves. Momijigari is the Japanese tradition of visiting areas where leaves have turned red in the autumn. The word comes from the two Japanese words momiji (紅葉) meaning "red leaves" or "maple tree" and kari (狩り), "hunting". It is also called kōy
07:08 Komyoji Temple
goo.gl/maps/iBavpvT5QeqeqhgT7
Komyoji Temple has a long history. Beautiful with its landscaped garden. This temple is very active and offers many activities.
About 1km northwest from Ashikaga IC (about 5 minutes)
Train: Approximately 5 km north of Ashikagashi Station on the Tobu Isesaki Line (20 minutes by taxi)
About 4km north from JR Ryomo Line Ashikaga Station (15 minutes by taxi)
09:50. Saishoji Temple
goo.gl/maps/prpuUNw5r2U4TsXk8
This temple was founded by Gyoki and built by Emperor Shomu. The current Chief Priest is the 94th in the line.
In the 8th century, this area was close to the northern border of Japan, and the Tohoku region was settled by the Emishi, a people who did not belong to the central government in Nara or Kyoto.
Therefore, Bishamonten, the god of war who protected the north, was enshrined here.
Later, this temple became a sacred place where warlords prayed for victory in battle, many monks have been praying for the peace and security of the nation, and people make prayers.
Access
30 minutes from Ashikaga I.C on the Kita-Kanto Expressway
25 minutes from Oota-Kiryu I.C on the Kita-Kanto Expressway

The stop stone is called “tomeishi” (留石) or “sekimori ishi” (関守石) in Japanese, I believe.

Very interested in visiting Chorin-ji in Momijigari season. Especially since it’s off the beaten track and you’d presumably have a more relaxed experience than in other spots known for their Autumn leaves. Or is the area well known with local tourists?
@NinjaMonkeyguy

It's a well known spot for locals.. but it would mean a very local atmosphere too!

I was in Minobu, Yamanashi in 2019 and was probably the only foreigner on that mountain and its many temples. It was buzzing with elderly Japanese tourists, but you’re right, it made for a great local atmosphere.

Chorin-ji temple (yamakawa-cho in Ashikaga) is very famous for its autumn leaves. There are not so many tourists in Ashikaga, but locals love to visit this temple, especially in Autumn. Behind this temple is the trailhead for Mt Daibo.

Nice video Nathan - many thanks. Looking forward to my first time visiting (and shopping in Japan soon). I think the advice on maybe buying tech with the current exchange rate is a good one. It touched 170 Yen to the pound again today. One tech / shopping related question. I'm curious to know which camera you use when travelling? If it's not a trade secret :) I have a Canon EOS 5 SLR - but really want something a little easier to carry around.

Excited for your first trip! .. for this video i filmed on a Sony A7s3 mostly on a DJI RS2 Gimbal with a Rode Wireless Mic. Lenses 28-74 and 70-400. As you can see I don't travel light! lol.. I do sometimes carry the DJI pocket for more casual stuff and the iphone has been used many times too!

Hi, how are you. Could you please suggest cheap and viable itinerary destinations around Tokyo for travel plan of one week. Thanks and lots of love amd regards from India 🇮🇳.

You should think more how much will you be spending daily. If you're eating locally you'll be spending a few thousand yen per person each day on the low end. If you have your own apartment or facility to boil water(Hotel Kettle for example) you could buy stuff like Cup Ramen and take back with you instead so you save a bit of money. Then you have your travel expenses if you're going via train(Pick up a rail card for this). Then what you may spend shopping depending on what your interests are.

Mostly by car organised for me to promote ashikaga but most will be accessible by public transport with a little bit of planning.. my last video in the series could all be done on foot so you might want to check that one out
