Exploring some of the Nirvana-related places in Seattle. Nirvana is one of the most successful bands in the history of rock n' roll and popular music. Nirvana released three studio albums: Bleach (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Chad Channing, Dale Crover, Jack Endino), Nevermind (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Butch Vig) & In Utero (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Steve Albini, Scott Litt), as well several live albums such as MTV Unplugged, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, Live at Reading, and a compilation album, Incesticide. Kurt Cobain was the driving force behind Nirvana, his songwriting propelling the band to great heights.

Excellent point. Was lucky enough to catch them at the Phoenician Club. Just before nevermind went thru the roof. (Caught the Melvins a few years later at a pub it was a bit lame half the crowd of about 50 didn't understand who they were. ( there's footage on KZfaq ) of the Phoenician show.

Great to watch this documentary. My girlfriend took me to the Paramount show a week after she played me Sliver. Seats were left side of the stage. I remember Kurt smashing his guitar and the filming. This show blew my mind. MudHoney were amazing too. After that I was hooked and went to a lot of Seattle concerts and bought a lot of vinyl. I never knew about the Screwdriver bar. Walked by it hundreds of times.

Was 15 in 1991. Was at a HS party on a Saturday. The room was playing hair bands. A lot of people were wearing neon colors. I hated the hair bands at the time. Out of nowhere. The room fell silent. All of us were tapping our feet and bobbing our heads. It like we were in a trance. At the end of the song. Some guy stands up on a chair and yells. “ Who was that? It’s the next Elvis!” Nirvanas “ In bloom was playing. A few weeks later. Everyone was wearing flannel and every car was blasting Grunge. It was magical….

FWIW you are right. It was clearly 16mm at Paramount. 1. You aren't going to run around with 35mm for an entire concert. All cameras were moving heavily. It's also extremely expensive because this means that you need to double or triple up your crew size to switch camera guys. It makes no logistical sense. 2. You can tell by the lenses and filmsize that it's not 16mm. The barrel distortion and depth of field looks different. 3. Film grain gives it away that it's clearly 16mm. 4. There are small glimpses of cameras in a few shots and the thing (i dont know the English word for it) which holds the film is way too small to be 35mm.
@latentsea
@latentsea 3 жыл бұрын
4. Magazine . You crack me up talking about film cameras. Barrel distortion? Too funny. They make some small 35mm cameras and some big 16mm cameras but most likely you are correct. 16mm. Arriflex SR2 would be good for concert, 400 foot loads of 16mm run for 11 minutes at 24 fps. They probably used old news cameras CP16’s with the 400 ft magazines, dark black boxes, mag sticks up, shitty C-mount lens mount with 12-120 zoom, and prime lenses. Cheap grainy crap, perfect for their genre. I haven’t seen any of the footage. Could it have been video cameras? 35mm would have been way too expensive for these cats.

Was Kurt Cobain in some way connected to Long Beach California? Krist Novoselic was born close to Long Beach in Compton. Did both he and Kurt Cobain for this reason spend time in Long Beach? After his death people made some claims about Kurt Cobain and Long Beach. An owner of a long-gone coffee house called Midnight Espresso (2nd Street Belmont Shore area of Long Beach) told me Kurt Cobain did some odd jobs for him. I know prior to his involvement with Nirvana Dave Ghrol spent time in Long Beach. Nirvana was famous for playing Bogarts here in Long Beach. Was there if any references of Kurt Cobain spending time in Long Beach before Nevermind? Thanks

@@paulwblair Wish I could. There were a few rumors and claims made in and around that coffee house in Long Beach. Midnight Espresso played nothing but jazz 24/7. The only time they did not play jazz was the day Kurt Cobain’s death was reported. Not only did they play Nirvana that day, they played it extremely loud. It was the first place i had gone learning of his death. I later went down the street and got pretty drunk. It hit me kinda hard. Be nice to know these rumors were true. Thanks

People who regard the Paramount show as one of Nirvana’s best are people who just don’t know any better, and certainly never saw Nirvana. The show was a dud. Don’t get me wrong. Was still better than almost any show that came after it until the band’s demise. (Once Nirvana tuned down from standard tuning around late 92 through 94 it sucked the energy out. Vocals were crap. Plus Kurt stop trying). But from late 1990 through early 1992 there are far better Nirvana shows. The paramount was the last show of a LONG grueling tour. They had no energy. Vocals were shot. Cameras running around. And the sound/mix is crap. Drums sound like cardboard boxes. The reason the Paramount stands out to people is because it was professionally recorded, and during a time that we all know was THEE time to see Nirvana. Yet , it still remains that if you want to see a GOOD Nirvana show… checkout Nirvana at St Andrews hall in Detroit on 10/11/91. Or the Metro. Or JC Dobbs, The Moon in CT, or basically any other show from the US 91 tour, previous to the paramount. Those shows eclipse the paramount by 1000X. Paramount show is pretty crap. 🤷🏻‍♂️
