Not sure what year this early 80s Nissan Datsun 200 SX is but its a shame it was scrapped. It was not in bad shape at all. I would have loved to have found this one for a few hundred dollars just as the junk yard paid for it. I believe it's a 1982 or 1983 model. I'm also willing to bet that the only damage that it has was probably caused by the yard. I was not a fan of the later fwd 200sx but these earlier rwd models are pretty cool.

I had an new 82 200sx sedan as my first car. I LOVED it! I'd like to say a big F you to the guy that hit me at a red light and totaled it. It was still running smooth at 150,000+ miles.

I had an '82 in virtually the same paint combo. Interior trim and seat fabric looks the same. Funny story: the drivers seat ripped on the side and I took it to a local upholstery guy who had done some great work for my dad on a '79 Monte Carlo my sister had trashed. They guy said, "well, I can get the seat close but not exact." When I got it back, I couldn't tell the difference! I guess he was such a perfectionist that exact to him was REALLY exact. I loved the car and it was fun to drive but it got to be a little costly to maintain for a college student after 100K miles, so after 4 and a half years of ownership, I let my dad have it to trade in, and I took his 2 year old S-10 pickup. That ended up being a good decision for both of us as the S-10 lasted me a good 6 years for almost no repair money (one small radiator repair and a water pump) and the 200SX would have required a lot more. Maybe mine was just more problematic than others, but I wouldn't call this model all that reliable. Still, got a lot of compliments on it and enjoyed it while I had it.

Looks like my grandma's '82 I took ownership of in '90/ '91. Ran great the years I had it. White exterior with blue interior. Super heavy metal exterior louver hatchback shade cover. After market dark tent job. Eventually as the car aged, during winter, the female voice alert would slow down in a warped computer dieing sorta weirdness. 😂 I turned it into an art car while in college. Covered it in plastic animals and called it the Ark. Sadily people would pick the animals off. So, I covered it in blue astroturf and called it the Flood. 💦 Mid 90s, sold it as is for $250 cash. Great ride!

Yep had one new in 82. You think you were real cool pulling out into traffic with your girl next to you, then you heard; “ding, your parking brake is on, ding, your parking brake is on.😂

The Z20 to Z24 engines were super reliable and tough. I believe it had a double roller timing chain and had the dual plug ignition system.

My mother bought one like that brand new one from the dealer when I was only 15 years old. It has what they called a NAP Z engine. It's a 4 banger but it has 8 spark plugs. The car was reliable from what I remember of it. But once it got older, not so much. and that car's engine compartment was just filled with wires and hoses all over the place. It really was a nightmare to work on and she took it to a couple of mechanics that ended up screwing up the repair and my mom had to take them to small claims court to get her money back. LOL, I remember the seats in that car were like you were sitting on a plush soft couch. The car had a little bit of get up and go but it couldn't keep up at all with a 280Z which would smoke it every time. That car looked like crap and I have never seen anyone try to restore one or know anyone that felt it was worth keeping up. They are trash cars and I would highly recommend staying far away from these cars unless you want to spend the rest of your life trying to find parts and constantly fixing all its electrical goblins. Damn, that car had a lot of those. That voice switch was to turn off the voice that would actually say to you when you left the door open in your car"The door is ajar" "The door is ajar" That car had a bunch of stupid warnings that used a recorded human voice rather than just a chime. Trust me when I say that car is never going to run again and you would be far better off looking for a Honda if you like Japanese cars of that era. They are far better made than all the others and they are much easier to work on. Parts will still be hard to find but not as bad as Datsuns would be. And Hondas just look better than Datsuns of that era. I had never seen even one 200sx that looked good when it was fixed up. Not one. In fact you hardly ever saw the 200sx on the street at all. They just were not very desired. They were fun when they were brand new for a little while but they were not a car you would feel proud to own really. Good Luck

That's a cool old car. 127k is low miles! A shame someone let the inside go like that. The NAPS Z22 was a good engine!

If it's like the one I had in the 80s ... the engine is not the problem, it's the ghosts in the machine that happen with the electrics that likely caused it to be scrapped. Power everything, talking warning system, digital dash ... all were great tech gadgets for the time, but when they started to fail a decade or two later you'd never find what went bad. For the last couple of years I had mine I literally disconnected the battery lead if I parked it for more than a day because the phantom power drain would kill the battery. Still ... awesome car to drive when it was working right. Rear wheel drive 5-speed was super fun. I miss that car!

It's a 1983, because the 10th digit of the VIN is a "D" (you stayed on it just long enough that I could freeze it...LOL). It's got a Z22 engine which would be a 2.2L fuel injected engine. The 2187 next to that is the cc displacement which would round up to 2200cc or 2.2L.

I figured it was '83 based on the badging. I had an '82 and the badging didn't mention Nissan. I think they went to the Z22 in '82, though.

@@scott1564 Always go with the VIN for the win. The "D" for the 10th VIN digit makes it a 1983. "C" for the 10th digit makes it a 1982.

That is a 1983 Datsun 200 SX with the SL package.80 and 81 had slimmer taillights and front end and were 2.0 Liter 100 horse motor's.82 and 83 used the revised styling and a 102 horse 2.2 liter motor.To my knowledge these were the first engines with 2 spark plug for each cylinder.Gave it a cleaner burn and better economy.Came as both a notchback coupe and also as a hatchback like this one.

Not bad, could not compete with Celica, though
@scott1564
@scott1564 10 ай бұрын
It was a fuel injected engine. It competed with the NA Celica fine, though the Celica was probably more reliable -- and may have had a little more power. The Supra, on the other hand, is a far different story. I rode in Celicas from that era and owned the SX -- the SX had more interior space.
