The Nissan LEAF has been with us for more than a decade now! It was the car that got the keys of an EV into the hands of hundreds of thousands of people.
It had an overhaul in 2018, and a tiny refresh in 2022...but it is still relevant in 2022?
We talk charging, CHAdeMO, price, connectivity, comfort, competition, power, batteries (40kWh and 62kWh) and compare it to some of the competition.
Let's keep the discussion going on Facebook: / 408761197397110

The Leaf is still very much relevant in today's EV boom, especially as a city car. Leaf E+ is worth all the money.

Living in San Diego county with lots of sunshine, we installed solar on our home in January with the idea of purchasing an EV - I looked around a fair amount but didn't much consider the Leaf just kind of figuring that other models had passed it by in it's decade of existence but when I did look at the Leaf there was actually one on the lot and I bought it on the spot in January of 2022 - perhaps the best timed purchase of my life before gas prices exploded here. Not only is it economical but to me it is fun to drive and comfortable. Personally, I couldn't be happier.

Leaf is still the value leader in the EV world. Chademo installs are still going in, so Leaf still has some legs, though the clock may start ticking. Keep the Leaf content coming!

Great review! I will focus on the situation in the Netherlands. I've driven the 40kWh version for nearly 4 years now. And yes, the drawbacks of the smaller battery and the decline of chademo charging points has set in - on the other hands, new fast charging stations appear and they still do carry the chademo plug. Although, it is usually just one. I drive the Leaf as a company car. And it never has failed me. First I was looking at the Hyundai Kona - though I couldn't help finding the boot space cramped. And when adding some options I deemed necessary, the monthly prices went up and up... Then, back to the Leaf. I usually don't go back to the same model. But it convinced by price and specs. You can get the e+ business executive for 35K euro's, exactly on the low tax limit. And that is comparable with the Tekna trim. Another 'plus' is that I managed to persuade the mandatory (by lease firm) new wallcharger isn't necessary at all (still 1phase charging, so no need to go 3phase) cuts prices down as well. All in all, I expect to fast charge once every 2-3 months - and then, given the large battery pack, only for half an hour or less. That's absolutely doable. So, right now waiting for approval from the firm. The only fly in the ointment is the long delivery time. 8 months for the e+!

I think the Chademo charge port is the LEAFs biggest negative. But with a 62 kWh battery, quick charge is less important to the LEAFs primary function, being a local, daily driver. I thought about this for a while before I decided to replace my 2012 LEAF with a 2022 LEAF. So far as the design, I will be happy to see a lot of the things I have become familiar with over the years are still there. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I am excited to see all the improvements.

Give the battery pack a liquid cooling system and earn a LEAF customer for life! I love my used 2013 LEAF, but I know that further battery degradation is inevitable (it's held constant for me over the last 2.5 years, but I know it's only a matter of time before I lose a bar, and then another...). Give it a battery pack that lasts as long as a Tesla's (or Bolt minus the fire risk) and you have the absolute ideal city car for the USA. I will never buy a large SUV or truck for a variety of reasons, so for me it's either a refreshed LEAF with battery cooling, a repaired Bolt, or a Kona/Niro. Maybe when I see an IONIQ5 or a Kia EV6 in person I'll be able to tell if it's too big for me or not, but until then I'm driving my LEAF into the ground with the hope that a better one will replace it, but my hopes are low.

I like the leaf for its great build quality and 10 years of spare part vehicles. Its battery can be taken apart and each cell sold seperately. You can put a 62Kw battery into a 24Kw leaf or if youre unlucky in life a 24KW battery into your 62Kw Leaf. You can mix and match motor, inverter and charger between generations. This is a car that you buy to keep for 20 years not just until the lease is up.

I bought a leaf 2022 about a week ago and went in knowing, that its not the best, its not the fastest, not got the longest range, and there are a lot of compromises, but the price atleast for me who lives in the US and gets all the incentives, I can say i find comfort in knowing that for me, it does everything i wanted, and still didnt entirely break the bank :) Your video was wonderfully insightful, I'd say to all those that are looking to buy the leaf just know, its not perfect, it isnt the best, but it does what its designed to do, and the price is even reasonable :)

Yeah i’m just ordering a brand new leaf after many years of ownership of the original. 3.3kw charger was fine for me, I never run it flat and can charge it to 100% in 4 hours. Ultimately apart from 2 days a week my car is on my drive from 6pm to 8am so plenty of charging time never mind needing 3 phase 11kw chargers both at home and on the car.

I think an important note in the Plus is the Pro Pilot Assist and assisted steering. Nothing is better than not having to constantly brake in traffic because I have the pro pilot assist that follows the speed of the car ahead of me. My mom has a Tesla and I have a Leaf 2022 SV Plus and she likes a lot of the safety features in my car such as the 360 cameras and backup alert.

CHAdeMO works Car to Grid CCS don't. Leaf is proven and reliable it does the job. Never had a problem with battery over temping as I don't drive at top speed. Also recharge on long journey's when battery is above 20% never below. Only charge to 80% unless 100% essential. Never let it stand with 100% in it but drive off straight away. I have 62 Kw version and happy with it. It is my second Leaf as I had the 30Kw MK1 before and it too is a very good car.

I leased a LEAF back in 2019 (right before the pandemic) as a way to dip my foot into EV ownership and I really enjoyed it. The biggest killer was the range (This was before the Plus were available). I ended up purchasing and selling since the car market was crazy hot but I enjoyed my time driving that car. With that being said...the lack of proper battery heat management is a dealbreaker imo in 2022.

That was a very good revue of where we are with the leaf today. I have a 62 Kw Tekna e+ on order for my first EV. With Carwow, dealer discount, Nissan discount and Gov grant, I have picked up a brand new one for £26,856. So despite all its shortcomings the purchase makes complete sense for me. My longest journeys will be from UK to the Netherlands and perhaps 250 miles per day on UK holidays. Bulk of charging will be at home. In 2 to 3 years I’ll see what’s around then.

Had a leaf since they came out in 2012, the first being the 24 kWh, then the 30 kWh, am now driving a 40 kWh first edition 2.0 and it was just the best for a pair of retired folks like us. Having been all over the country and never had any problems with chargers it’s been number one in my books, and it’s battery is in perfect condition for a 2018 year purchase. But you are right in that Nissan needs to give it a big update, and I mean BIG. It’s getting a bit outdated for a 2022 year. Give us a new leaf Nissan and you will sell them .

The LEAF is brilliant. I have a 40 kwh 2021 N-Connecta LEAF it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. The 40 kwh is better handling on the 65 kwh. version. Well, let me say, I have only had one EV ! The connector is no big deal. CHADEMO is fine there are loads still around. I charge my LEAF mainly at home anyway. The ride, the fit & finish and reliablity is 100%. Connecton issues are a non issue; why fixate on a non issue ? Nissan LEAF is not outdated. The tech on board is the best and , I say this as a compliment, the LEAF is the Ford Sierra of the EV world. It is a high tech reliable option. Give me the British made (Sunderland) LEAF. You are fixated on range and battery charge time. The average Brit travels 10 miles in reality every day. Okay it's not a motorway cruiser but most EVs aren't if you want that go hybrid or spend loads more and get an Audi, Tesla or BMW. Have YOU driven one for more than a day or two ? Prices are much more realistic in 2023. A great buy. Glad you say ''yes'' and it should be a yes because it is a super all round EV. The MG and Hyundai I test drove weren't a patch on the Nissan fit and finish.

Hi Dave. Yes, the person that researched and wrote this episode has owned a LEAF for 5 years covering 100,000km and has also reviewed tens of other EVs. He certainly wouldn't call himself an expert but is probably in a decent position to comment. The LEAF is certainly a finely built car and there's a huge amount to love it for. But CHadeMo charging is an increasingly important weakness in most markets. Thanks for the comment...I'd say we're 95% in agreement on the car!

My big question is the 2023 battery chemistry? I understand the 40 kwh cars have a new battery design, and in Canada it has changed the range up to 311 km. Can anyone expand my knowledge on this? I can't seem to find anything about it online. I currently have a 2013 SL which was the first car with a heatpump. it has 11 bars on the 24 kWh battery and offers 136 km spring and fall. I love the simplicity and lightness of the passive battery. My wife's Ford Focus Electric weighs more due mostly to the coolant.

Bought an off lease 2015 SV for $11k in late 2016 when there were hundreds available. Have driven it about 15k miles. Because of used car demand, I can sell to CarMax for >$8k. It's never been on a road trip but has served us well as our daily driver. In US, you had to buy an SL to get the Chademo connector but level 1 has worked fine for us. We loved the car and considered a new one but are now waiting on a 2022 Mach-E extended range RWD. We are retired in rural Georgia, US and have limited car dealers nearby. Our electric choices were Bolt, Leaf or Mach-E. We can use the Ford for our frequent trips to Florida. The other two, not so much.

As septuagenarians, this 2022 is likely the last car we’ll buy. Price, value, features are all adequate for our needs. Range isn’t a problem for us; we have PV solar at home so driving for “free” is great; if we decide to make a day-trip (or overnight to San Diego) there are plenty of charging stations. Still relevant? For us, absolutely!

AC charging at 11 kW cannot generally be done at a UK residential setting as it maxes out single phase supply at 7.4 kW. Only useful at public chargers when DC Rapid is usually better.

Good point Dave, but we'd still love to see cars with much better AC charging. 22kW AC posts much much cheaper to install than DC, and banks of them at cinemas, shopping centres, supermarkets, etc. will go a long way to helping those without off-street parking. Thanks for the comment, Dave!

I think the original Leaf model is a better car, within its market, than the latest Leaf. For the low/very low mileage driver, who potters around the town or pops to nearby surrounds, you can't honestly beat an old shape used Leaf for the money. The early Leafs were quite innovative too for their time - VTG, for example. A 2022 Leaf is not at most people's list tops, I'm thinking, because it's no longer as innovative. Now it only has new low price in its favour, and Chinese cars are going to kill that one. If Nissan replaced Chademo for worldwide sales it would be far better. Has Carlos Ghosn's vision and legacy been lost?

I believe that Nissan completely lost their collective minds and their ability to stay competitive after the Carlos Ghosn arrest. Guilty or not, it is fairly obvious that pressing charges In Japan and luring him back into the country would put him in jail and silence him. I am not sure if Nissan was more worried of his plan to further Electrify or the Renault merger. It will take Nissan some time to get back on track and the Ariya falls short of a good first step. The CHAdeMO connector on the current Leaf does stop me from even considering the Leaf for a runabout in the Midwest.
