Nissan RB25/30, RB30/25, RB26/30, RB30DET - Whatever you call it, It's the same thing. BUT this engine can be built many different ways using various cylinder heads.
if you're on a budget you can just slap on an RB25 head and "send it" but in our case we've decided to rebuild the engine using top quality parts supplied by @golebysparts4257
The RB engine was fitted from factory to many different Nissans including Skylines, Stageas, Cedrics, Cefiros, Glorias, and laurels but other models like the 300ZX never got the option to be powered by "Gods Motor"
Al's 300ZX was originally VG30DETT but with the help from some epic companies like Haltech, Go Fast Bits, Raceworks, Golebys Parts and Supercheap Auto this Z will soon be RB30DETT powered and cruisng the streets of the sunshine coast.

Been amazing watching and learning from you over the years Al, you were a big part of the inspiration for me to become a mechanic myself way back when I first saw the interview you did at the end of an early episode of the Gramps build series for Marty. That was over 8 years ago and im now a qualified mechanic myself and still learn something new every video you guys make. Best of luck with the future mate ✌️definitely still sticking around for Woody too

Now please don't take my regular Wednesday night viewing away. It's like the days of TV where ya wait a week for the next ep. This video has bought back a lot of memories from back in the early 2000's building RB30's in the garage. Rb30 blocks were easy to get for a box of beers as they were all cracking heads, RB25DE's from an R32 GTS25 were easy to find as they were all being replaced with RB20DET's. Datsun A15 70lb valve springs to replace the 40lb springs in the non turbo head so it didn't float the valves on boost, Mazda RF diesel cambelt as it was the correct length. Factory exhaust manifold with ground mounting ears to clear the block and an external waste gate port welded on. VN V6 commodore coil packs adapted to run off the Nissan igniter, Homemade forward facing plenums, generic Chinese intercoolers, intercooler piping made at the exhaust shop and Chinese T4 mystery box turbos. We could buy and build a complete car for 10k, but we did spend a lot of time fixing them.

Can I just say, F#@K we are going to miss you Al! Just promise you will send us a post card so we can at least follow your adventures!! Honestly mate you just take good care of yourself and the wife and make as many smiles and laughs as you can together. You know Woody has this and there is no small number of people willing to help out so all will be good. I think many of us forget this, life is not a dress rehearsal we only get one go at this shit, so don't screw around thinking "one day I will do that" cause sooner or later we all run out of time.

In Canada, we had to wait 15 years to be able to import Skylines, so when I finally got to start building RB engines, the Skylines Australia forums were a huge resource for me. Once again, you have done an excellent job explaining all of the important details of putting together a performance engine of this nature and I particularly like that you take budget into account when discussing the build. Most people, like myself, are restrained by a tight budget and it really helps to know which things are important and should not be skipped. Cheers guys!

25:08 Al, shrinking is still pretty common, especially in bike engines. Will miss your knowledge on the show, but also you're a great communicator. One thing to have a head full of knowledge, but it is another thing entirely to be able to hold an audience while you explain it. Especially when there's people like me who has been in the trade as long as you, right through to the modern 'fix it using KZfaq' generation kid with their first car. 👌

Just to follow up on the non-VCT head, it's the 08U casting, I built an RB30 with that head and a set of cams (they may have been from Kelford but that was over a decade ago), it made a fairly lazy 340kw at the wheels via a RWD converted R32 GTR gearbox. It is a perfectly cromulent combination... one internet cookie to those that know what "cromulent" is and where it is from, you are a real one.

I helped a mate build a high compression N/A 25/30 back in 2001 for his R31 GTS2, based on articles in Zoom magazine and information from Julian Edgar. He used a RB25de head and custom pistons. Was about 11.5:1. Lightened and knife edged crank, mild aftermarket cams, GTR oil pump, twin t/b inlet manifold and a LINK Plus ECU. Made just over 280rwhp (210kw) Sounded beautiful, pulled like a train and revved like a race car. He sold it to buy a house....I should have bought the damn thing when he offered it to me. Hindsight is a bitch.

I was among the early adopters of the 3L swap on SAU. Having the whole rotating assembly balanced made it rev so smoothly but i put dual tomei 1.2mm restrictors in the block instead of blocking one and had all sorts of oil breathing issues with too much oil in the head. My single GT35 with 0.82 rear housing could be solidly into boost at 3500 rpm with the full 26psi by 4000-4500 but doing that meant it had no traction in 1st-3rd gear as soon as the turbo came on, it was much nicer to drive if you slowed the boost ramp to be all in by 5500 rpm. Will be interesting to see how your twin setup performs.
@theskidfactory
@theskidfactory 6 ай бұрын
I ended up with blanked and 1.25mm from memory which is slightly smaller than the recommended in the document. I have been advised that crankcase pressure is a major contributor to the oil not running back from the head also. If you have too much pressure below the pistons then the oil simply cannot gravity drain. Why that is the case could be for many reasons. Piston to bore too loose, ring gaps too loose, general engine wear. Dave put some hours into clearancing this engine so I am very confident that won't be an issue but we will see in due time.

 Good to see the RB30 hybrid guide is still getting used, and thanks for clearly explaining a lot of the issues/reasoning to a new generation Al. I've got a 30/25 in my Stagea, it is the engine Nissan should have done from factory. (probably worth mentioning that 4wd RB30s have extra fun with block/sump adapter plates, oil pick up and sump/gearbox bolts One thing, RB25 NEO is a better choice than RB26 head if you can find one. Probably cheaper but it also has solid lifters, good sized ports and still has VCT built in; many RB26 modifiers add the HKS V-CAM but 25 NEO has that from factory. Also, Boost doc does a rb230 timing cover extension if you don't want to do DIY

Remember building one of these Frankensteins 15+ years ago. Fond memory’s of tapping new cam idler pulleys, Welding heads and running a Saab timing belt from memory, also running hockey pucks as engine mounts to drop engine height to fit under the bonnet of a 33. And playing with old wolf3D trying to make it happy. Lots I’ve forgotten about it for sure and i probably have some old photos of it laying around. I reckon i would of added a bunch to those forum posts from back then, mostly all gone now sadly.

I did a bunch of pneumatic tug boat winch rebuilds. 1/8" wall sleeves with a .007" interference fit. Liquid Nitrogen and the install tool had to be chilled in it too or it heated up the sleeve before it was seated. The large winch body casting stayed at room temp the whole time. It was tricky to develop the process but slick and easy once the process was figured out. It's amazing what can be done with the right planning. I love watching these kind of builds.

Fun Fact: I have the rarer RB25DE head out of an R32 GTS, which are supposedly the easiest direct bolt on to an RB30. The only downfall is the intake port shape is like an RB20 head and actually requires an RB20 intake manifold to match the intake port correctly.

Like everyone, I'll be sorry to see Al take a back seat but I hope there's a way that the banter can continue as that is an important part of the channel.

I loved The VG30DETT, it's a beautiful motor, crazy ass torque. Heavy as hell with the cast iron, but tougher than a tank. I can understand why you're going RB tho' its a lot easier to get more bang out of 'em
