My only question is if it is necessary to drain excess fluid at 15:50
@PMitchell106
@PMitchell106 10 ай бұрын
That's how you set the proper level of the fluid, otherwise, it may be overfilled. There is no way to accurately measure everything that comes out because of the way the filter housing is mounted, and the amount of fluid drained may not be consistent from one service to the next, depending on how the vehicle was lifted and other factors. There is also no guarantee that the previous fill was to the correct level. Since the transmission fluid expands a lot with temperature, the transmission needs to reach operating temperature and be on a level surface to be measured properly.

Thanks for the tutorial, that was very helpful. I tried my best to get the cap for the filler tube out from the top, but I just couldn't get it, the plastic was all messed up. Since the fender well was out anyway, it was super easy to just take out the tube from the bottom (one 10mm bolt only), and then remove the cap, and put it back.

Incredibly good video. Our nissan versa 2017 has 65k miles on it and is starting to have transmission issues. The mechanic said we may "need" a new transmission. After watching this, i am hopeful that they are full of BS. Thank you sir.

These CVT’s are horrible and you might need a new transmission. Changing the fluid will not magically fix it, just might prolong it a little longer. Now if you just have dirty fluid and your mechanic told you that you need a new transmission then that’s a bad mechanic

Thanks for your video! I just completed this today. The hardest part was getting that dumb cap off the filler tube so that I could REFILL the fluid!!! 😅 Like the person you got that car from, I was told the transmission was going, and I needed to replace. (Mind you, we had no codes, just some loss of power and being sluggish) We’re only at 87k miles! But, the transmission fluid had never been changed. What a difference, nice and smooth again now, and hopefully plenty more life.😃

I've recently started experiencing noticeably light "kickbacks" (not sure how to describe) when braking with the engine, so I decided to have CVT fluid changed. Nissan Rough Sport, 40000km. After the fluid + filters was changed, it started driving like new.

Very informative and right on point. This exactly matches my 2017 Nissan Versa SV vehicle. I have 172,172 miles on it; and the previous owner was Hertz (car rental company). Don't know if the CVT Transmission filter OR fluid has ever been previously changed. Local Transmission Shop quoted $672.58 for simply changing the fluid and filter (they said they will NOT flush the system). I've obtained my FILTER & GASKET direct from Nissan for $26.20; and 5 quarts of Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic A/T Fluid Multi-Vehicle MAXLIFED1 for CVT transmissions specifically shows it's for Nissan CVT NS-3 for $49.80. Because of rain, I'll be performing this task next week.

I would be very careful buying a car that was owned by Hertz. You never know what shenanigans they might pull. Some people who rented their vehicles were accused of stealing them. Then one person legally bought a car once owned by Hertz and somehow it got repossessed. Steve Lehto has the story on that one on his KZfaq channel. He is a lawyer in Michigan but some of his advice may apply to other places too. He discusses a lot of cases where there is clearly some sort of obvious injustice and can show just how corrupt the legal system can be. You would be surprised about the corrupt mess it often is!!

@Breeze210 HI I would change the cvt asap! If it never changed what you do is drained the cvt fluid and fill with whatever amount you drained. That's what I did, i got about 2.2 quarts out and filled back with same fresh 2.2 quarts Nissan (NS3 cvt). Don't use any other cvt fluid brand, stay with genuine. If you want to change the filter, make sure you also save how much you drained in that area and add to your main fill.

These CVTs are not so terrible if you change the fluid when you should. That is 60,000 miles according to Nissan but really it should be 30,000 miles. Sooner if it seems to need it sooner. Don't wait until you have permanent internal damage because at that point changing fluid will not help anymore.

Nicely done. on a completely side note here. there is a large main engine ground right by the filter i noticed that the bolt is corroded and the crimp is showing some green Its a good idea whilst you are in there with the cover off to remove and clean that ground right up as that can lead to starting and running issues down the road. more common on the Altimas but I have seen it on others as well.

There are some differences from the CVT on my Rogue although most of them are similar in some ways. The oil filter housing on mine is on the opposite side and has 4 bolts. They can be gotten out easily without doing what some have done removing the battery tray and all to get to it from above. Also on mine they didn't make the fill tube difficult to get to. If you never removed one of those caps before they are difficult, especially when you never had to push that tab. On some caps they seem to have "revised" them so that coming at them from the side with a screwdriver doesn't work any more. They still work the same way but come off slightly different. My filter looks the same but the gasket is a different style so watch out for that if you ever order aftermarket for these cars. I have no idea how reusable the gaskets may or may not be but the filter on Rockauto for mine comes with it included. I have had my 2017 Rogue feeling like it may have had transmission issues but I poured some injector cleaner in when I filled up (as recommended on the bottle) and now it is a lot smoother. Before that I used to see flares on very rare occasions to around 4000 RPM but no jerking when it settles back down. I am not sure if that is normal or not but I never had a conventional automatic transmission do that. It always happened at a particular intersection where you would go down hill after coming to a complete stop at the sign (not something you see a lot of people do these days). I am not pressing too hard on the accelerator but I am also not that old person who everyone dreads getting stuck behind who seems to have forgotten that the car has an accelerator. I like my Rogue the maintenance is easy enough to do myself for the most part. I have the 2.0 and not the 2.5 that has the filter hidden behind a panel in the wheel well of all the weird places for it. Some Toyotas are like that too. I wonder how many people would not have bought them if they knew they had to take the wheel off to change an oil filter!! On my Rogue the filter is on the front of the engine. I could take it off from above if I wanted to but the plastic panel under it would get covered with oil. I also wonder how many people with the 2.5 may have bought or are considering buying an oil filter relocation kit to put the filter _in a place that actually makes sense_ . I know some cars and SUVs are nonsensically designed, some are worse than others!

How is that Castrol fluid working for you? I know these vehicles don't seem finicky about the fluid as long as it is compatible with NS2 or NS3 depending on the year of the vehicle. Just never let ANY normal transmission fluid get in those or that will cause a problem. It may either fail very soon or maybe not even be drivable at all!!

As the pinned comment says, this is by far the most comprehensive video. After a lifetime of being intimidated by the CVT, I feel like I can take it on. I do have one question raised by the local dealerships here in PR: does the transmission need to be reprogrammed after every flush or are they just trying to get more money out of me? I was told by two techs that it's essential, stating that without it the transmission just won't work as it's supposed to. But I've been researching for hours and have found nothing to back this claim up. Now I'm not sure if I want to do the change myself (which I feel I can) or just pay the $300+ in order to avoid giving my wife ammo if anything goes sideways 😄.

I do strongly believe that the round filter is doing most of the filtering. I do not believe for even a second that the screen can catch all of the debris that causes problems. Look at Volkswagen with their 09G transmission, I had one and know that the filter is just a screen. They also have a ton of valve body problems with those. My only guess is that SOMETHING is making its way through that screen and it gets stuck in the valve body and the solenoids become abrasive from that debris and wear the valve body out very slowly over time as the solenoids actuate. Now I realize that a CVT is different. It would have less parts likely to cause debris to get in the fluid. That is far fewer clutches. I wonder how many CVT failures are the result of not changing that round filter? I just have to wonder because some people think that little things like that don't make a difference. Odds are they may be stuck on the side of the highway one day with a neglected CVT. This isn't the 1960s any more, our cars are a lot more complex than that these days and it just gets worse!

Easy way to get the 'dipstick' filler cap off was if you look at the bottom the the filler tube there is a 10mm bolt....remove that and pull the filler tube up and out. Then you can work on removing the filler cap outside of the car where it's easier, or just fill the fluid where you removed the filler tube and then reinstall the tube. Me personally, I removed the cap outside of the car and then reinstalled the filler tube to use as a funnel extension as I could not reach with my funnel all the way to the bottom of the dipstick tube where I originally pulled out the dipstick tube! Walmart sells a clear transmission filler tube for a bit over $4 that would have worked though.....hope this helps! I know it will help my knuckles from getting scraped up next time as I won't try and pry the release tab on the filler cap while the tube is still mounted to the trans!

OR, is there a chance that just replacing fluid and filter could stop the slippage?! Local dealer and all mechanics I've found around me so far say they only replace transmission, not repair it, even if it just needs a new belt or new pump control valve. I see posts from mechanics around the country that say it's not so hard to repair these transmissions in many cases, but I can't find anyone yet with that savvy in my area. Thanks in advance.

I have changed the fluid in the car change the stepper motor three times already because it was throwing a code saying the stepper motor was bad transmission still doesn't want to shift the way it's supposed to start slippin you have to let off the gas for it to keep going also the transmission is under a lot of pressure there has to be something clogged somewhere I've already cleaned out the oil cooler and the valve body does anybody know why this transmission should be under so much pressure you run it for 10 minutes and pull the dipstick out and it just explodes with fluid same with the oil pan

I’m thinking about taking this job on. It’s a 2017 versa though. Was my girlfriend’s mom’s car but now she has it. 107,000 miles. No idea if it’s ever been changed but it drives fine. I’ve changed transmission fluid in my GM cars before including removing the top cooler line and changing all of it that way. This one I’m confused on how to get the proper level still. I’m wondering if I could pop that filler cap off and get a sample for a visual with a small straw or vinyl tubing. Good video G! Thanks

Put the car on level grounder jack stands idle o for 15 minutes are you scan tool for 103°Remove the 19 mm drain plug and let the XS fluid drain to the starch to drip replace the plug now you have the correct level...

That inner tube inside the drain plug will stop the fluid in the trans pan from spilling out. It’s like an empty cup surrounded in water. I’m thinking about removing the 1st drain bolt to get as sample of the fluid. On my 15’ versa note

I'm so angry that the Nissan service manual doesn't even mention the upper cartridge filter on the CVT. When I finally discovered it, and changed mine (at 91K Miles) it was really really filthy and clogged. Before changing it, the trans temp would get really hot (220 F) (I installed a temp gauge) AND it would downshift kind of funny on hills, in so far as the RPM would remain really high when coasting downhill, as if it was hanging in a low gear while coasting. AFTER getting that dirty plugged filter out, the shifting issue went away and the shifting from start was smooth as butter, moreover the fluid temp never goes above 205 now. Even with 4 people in the car, at freeway speeds (which used to send the temp to the 220-225 area) it runs cool as a cucumber. Had I known this, I'd have changed mine every 30K miles, seeing they're so cheap. Nissan is truly evil for not putting this filter on the regular service plan. EVIL! I'm sure I did irreparable wear to my trans running it so hot and straining the valve train by restricting the fluid flow with that plugged filter. GRRRRRR.

Could you drain the fluid, measure it, then put the exact same amount of fluid back in? Thus eliminating the pulling the drain plug "over fill" step.

Look how high up that drain hole is. It is not just raised up above the bottom of the pan but then the hole that the plastic tube for setting the fluid level is also up approximately another 3/8 of an inch. I had a Volkswagen with a similarly designed pan on the transmission and you would be surprised how much old disgusting fluid stays in there. Also because of that *none* of the sediment in the pan comes out with the fluid the way it might if the pan was designed differently. If the drain hole was flush with the bottom of the pan and it is possible to design them that way, more of the dirty fluid would come out along with some of that sediment. The only reason they don't design them that way is it would cost them 10 more cents to do it. I would happily pay them the damned 10 cents!! The problem is the accountants who sometimes get involved and prevent a different design just because it costs another cent to manufacture the vehicle that way. They can burn in Hell!!

An LPG space heater behind the bumper cover, (obviously when it's off the car), will make most of the plastic return to its original shape. Thermoplastic memory, or something. CVTs - if you're going to change the fluid, do the damn filters, as you have! Easy - just lots of bolts. Why wouldn't you?
