FULL DYNO RESULTS on this POWER ADDER BBC Stroker. Using a cheap Gen-V 454 core from the junkyard, we built a Multi-Purpose 496 stroker. Using the right combination of parts, we were able to make BIG power then run Power Adders for even more HP! Here in Part 1, we ran the motor NA then with a healthy dose of Nitrous. Part 2 will cover a 6-71 blower and Procharger Centrifugal Supercharger.

It’s so rewarding to see a person like you, with all the experience and knowledge you have, talk this things about cast cranks. Maybe someday the people will learn that even a tire shake can break a crankshaft, but not solely power. Great content as alway!

Richard, thanks so much for your knowledge drops in each video. I too was taught the rec port, steel crank and forged parts and a 4 bolt main being the only way to go for power. But found the task daunting when piecing together my first BBC. Thanks for clearing the air on all that. Gunna save me ton of money putting together my build and putting the money in the more important places instead of buying parts I won't ever need for my pump gas boosted build.

Just recently found your channel and really like the BBC content. Having been racing close to 40 years and your information closes the loop on a lot of what I've learned in that time. You said you've never seen a crank break just on power... On my "Shelf of Shame" I have a Bill Miller connecting rod attached to a BBC steel crank journal from my first big nitrous engine explosion in my drag boat around 1990 or so. Broke the crank into 3 pieces. Wasn't exactly just due to power, we detonated the motor due to not retarding the timing for the nitrous. I've run N/A, blown alky, blown gas and nitrous. Nitrous is still my favorite power adder. I've been racing drag boats with it since 1988 or so... Keep up the great work!!!

Hi Richard, big fan of your articles and videos! I love your comparisons, test and results showing how many different paths to performance enhancement there is! I like the variety of makes and power adders and have believed that engine or car doesn’t know what name it has! Amongst all I have a weakness for BBC with a power adder. It would be cool to see how close in performance at ~1-1.2k HP overall power curve would be between compound or combined combinations of power adders. Not which makes more power but more and repeatable power under the curve! Regardless the path love your articles and videos, good luck and keep up the good work! Carlos

Cast cranks are very strong at first but longevity is where the forged stuff pays off, rpm is what kills rotating assembly parts imo, but you can do some things to make them live longer like increasing rod and main clearance to allow for flex at higher hp, higher rpm

Man I feel SO much better now that you’ve confirmed 2 bolts will hold up to 1000hp cuz I’ve been told 700-750hp MAX…mine is very similar to this one but with flat tops and a much larger camshaft (Lunati .680/.700 lift, 296/304 split duration, and 110 LSA). Has 320cc Edelbrock heads and a Brodix 4150 single plane so obviously in the lower 9:1s for compression. Should love the adder though 😏 I’m hoping it’s in the 575-625hp range but we’ll see…always been a nitrous guy but really want to ProCharge this one🤘🏽I know this is a year old but any thoughts on my setup Richard Holdener?!

This is very similar to the combo I have in my car. Mine is only.030 over making it a 489ci and my compression is 13.8 to1 with afr 335’s, forged crank and H beam rods. Mine made 812 on motor then I have two nitrous kits each capable 400 hp each. The car runs easily in the 8’s. Extremely durable and reliable and I couldn’t be happier.

Speaking of heads. My theory is you can never have too big a heads. If the heads flow too much put in a lower duration cam to match the peak rpm you want to run at. Would love to see the comparison in power curves. Take like a big set of Brodix heads and run it with a 212 -224 kind of duration cam vs a set of stock heads with a 275-275 cam.

Going to test this theory with my nephew - we have a '97 7.5l(460) BBF on the engine stand that's getting swapped into his Mustang next winter, and we're going to throw a set of Kaase's new bad mofo SR-71 heads on the stock short block(fly cut the pistons if necessary) for the first season with the big block before we build it next winter(or find a good deal on a used race short block w/ an aftermarket block - aluminum would certainly be NICE)

A few years ago, car craft did a test with ported Ls1 heads vs factory ls3 heads. Same cam, truck, camaro and ls2 intake on ls1. Truck and ls3 intake on ls3. The Ls3 was about 20hp up at the top end but more than 20ft lbs down at 3000 rpm and didn't pull ahead till 5k. For the strip, their computer simulated numbers using ls2 vs ls3 intake were within a tenth and 1mph, the ls1 ahead but around town the with the higher torque farther down, the author thought it wouldn't even be close. If you were to put these heads in this test on a 427, they would leave a ton on the table compared to something like a set of edebrock 454-O heads on a street driven engine. The torque difference at 3000rpm would be closer to 40 ft lbs, the camshaft doesn't have the lift to make use of the high flow these heads offer.
@lukestrasser
@lukestrasser 4 жыл бұрын
On the dyno from tests I've seen on a BBC too much head didn't hurt power, but would it be lazy on the street? Hard to tell that on a dyno. Great call Brian, would like to see a big head with a small-ish cam.

Have you ever done a gen7 vortec 8100/496 from a silverado/suburban? Are there differences between the stock gen7 and the engine you run here? From a noob from Norway.

They're a little garbage compared to the other ones actually. No head selection either.

I want to know what ratio rods you used on this build, and what ratio rockers were used as well.

I would really like to see someone do the best power adders for a gen 7 BBC. Since they don't have much aftermarket support. Maybe see how much power adders they can handle before they break.
