Since I couldn't find any videos that really covered the pros and cons of the Garmin Aera 760 I decided to do one myself. The device is pretty expensive at $1500 US and you really should know the downsides before spending that kind of money. Hopefully this video will help and the next few videos are going to show it being used in the Lockheed 12 and hopefully on the XPlane Simulator.

760 is available as a dock mount too, where the 696 was not. Great vid! Whoever got you going on this subject is a genius.

The more I fly with my Aera 760 the more I enjoy it. It’s just a matter of getting use to the nuances. Reminds me of a GTN650.

Interesting to read the comments as I think a lot of viewers are missing the point of the 760, it is not meant to replace the iPads/tablets people use with flight planning software any more than the prior generations of the same product line were. It works very well as a sunlight readable in cockpit display that can drive an autopilot and works very well as a remote display for products like the GNX375 GPS navigator. Even in the simple GPS lateral guidance mode it can fly Direct To, intercepts, holds etc. which I don't think any of the tablet products can do. It complements the flight planning products. Garmin dropped a couple of features from the 796 like the scratch pad and the ability to user define the direct function keys per page, and some functions are 2 menus down which should be on the main menu page but generally it works well and is intuitive. In addition the GUI is consistent across the Garmin product line which is helpful when using the functionality. Needless to say I like the unit and it was a cost effective way to upgrade my legacy glass panel. YMMV.

Perhaps we're missing the point of the device but you fail to explain why it costs more than an ipad with an annual subscription to foreflight and yet provides less features. You mention its interfacing so I'll through another major issue in which is this: Garmin GNS systems have a major failure despite Garmins claims that they can hold more data, they have no private airports in them. The 760 and other portables do have those airports, however, if you have it interfaced to your panel systems, you can't navigate with it. You can only use whatever airports are in your panel system, which again, lacks almost all private airports, making your 10k panel install worthless.

@@nizexlizzy I think the 760 provides different features than the IPad rather than less features, as I said I do not see it as an iPad replacement. Good point about the private airports and it somewhat depends on how the private airport is designated as some are in the GNX databases and some are not. You can add them as user waypoints. With respect to the comment about not being able to navigate with the GPS navigator if the 760 is interfaced to the panel mount systems that is not quite correct. If you connect the 760 to an autopilot with one of its RS232 channels you can fly to any airport in the database via "internal" versus "external" (GNX375 in my case) mode using GNAV but you cannot fly vertical or coupled profiles, but most private airports do not have published approaches anyway. It is however a matter of personal choice, and I treat the 760 more as a panel addition than a flight planner and I have an iPad with Foreflight that is interfaced with the GPS Navigator but it is not very useful in my bubble canopy cockpit as it is mostly unreadable.

In Flight Plan display, you are able to name the flight plans by the menu button.

Yes the resolution is lower, but who really cares? The limitation of the iPad is that the display is very dim in direct sunlight. You could have mentioned that the display on this device is over twice as bright as an iPad mini on maxiumum. An iPad does not have a hard wired cradle. An iPad is fragile if used without a case, which is almost always the situation in the cockpit. An iPad is a pain to navigate en route. An iPad overheats with continuous use, which this device will never do. iPads are for flight planning on the ground. This thing is what you want in the cockpit. Or the 560.

Like you I really don't understand how these Garmin portable devices and Garmin Pilot continue to have so many user friendly issues. I'm sure pilots would be more than happy to be a part of regular Zoom or live meetings with Garmin to share ideas for improvements. With fixes implemented one should have super devices in short order rather than users being continuously frustrated.

I think you need to spend more time with the 760. Watching your video I noticed that it operates much like the 796 but with many improvements. For example you state that you can’t rename the flight plans but in the video you passed over the Rename button. Don’t give up!

You are correct but when it won’t connect to more than 1 bluetooth and there is no way to get to the details of a wireless connection it becomes quite useless. I was really wanting it to be useful as some of the UI elements are better than Garmin Pilot. But it is missing so much and the screen resolution is pretty bad to boot. Just another example of Garmin charging greater than Apple prices for a device that can do very little other than to be different.

Really glad I watched this and didn't just buy after the sponsor promo videos. Typical Garmin unnecessarily clunky, complicated and outdated. I'll just use the tablet.

I commented on this product in May 2020 in AvWeb: In the era of the iPad and EFB apps, this $1,600 price-point device must rank as one of the most ill-conceived products ever to be deployed by Garmin. It doesn’t appear to offer any meaningful features over a Foreflight/Garmin Pilot equipped iPad Pro - or the pilot-preferred iPad - to warrant a place in the GA cockpit. Even the Aera 660 was a niche product and a “hard sell”, and I simply cannot fathom how a successor product that doubles the 660’s price can be remotely be considered “moving the (avionics) ball forward.” Clearly a minimum amount of development costs were invested in the 760. Other than “super-sizing” the case, it differs little from the 660. Consumers will find their hard-earned cash better spent elsewhere.

It out puts NMEA data, that alone makes it unique and worth the money

@@stevenstyles7602 I also own a Bad Elf GPS Pro+. This is a relatively inexpensive (~$300) option for streaming GPS NMEA data. All the user needs to do is connect the Bad Elf Pro+ with a USB cable to stream NMEA0183 formatted position data over a USB connection. Don’t get me wrong: I’m a huge Garmin fanboy. But this time, they launched a “dud.”

@@flitetym Yes, but how can you put in waypoints and flight plans for the autopilot to follow, without a dedicated gps/ moving map? Non of the software only products, like Garmin pilot, SkyDemon, easy VFR etc, will output the NMEA data.

@@flitetym no, my aircraft is not certified, it’s on a U.K. LAA permit to fly. I’m just looking to upgrade from a Garmin 495, to a 760. Most if not all of the Garmin portable units out put the NMEA data, which will talk to my autopilot. I’d rather use SkyDemon software on an iPad, but it won’t work.
