The May tradition (on and off again) for New Japan Pro-Wrestling has been the Wrestling Dontaku show and this year it featured the brand new IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley defending against one of the young talent New Japan is putting its hopes on: Ren Narita of the House of Torture.
In addition, we had a continuation of the great and underrated feud between Zack Sabre, Jr. and Jeff Cobb for the NJPW World TV Title, a crazy log jam in the tag team division over both tag titles, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Nic Nemeth battling over the Global Championship, and a few surprises from David Finlay and Bullet Club War Dogs.
The match of the weekend however was between NEVER Openweight Champion Shingo Takagi and "Mad Man" Gabe Kidd who reminded us all of the atmosphere and hard-hitting action New Japan Pro-Wrestling was known for.
This is my review of NJPW Wrestling Dontaku 2024.

Most likely although booking of Finley has been so all over the place that they might genuinely thought him losing the belt then winning it right back was a good move. They also might have gone cold on Nick the way they did with Riddle

Can we just stop for a moment and praise the ability of Shingo to have so many great matches? A couple of years ago when he wrestled Will Ospreay in the Best Of The Super Juniors I watched this match with a friend of mine, who knew nothing about wrestling and he was amazed by how great the action in the ring was.

Absolutely agree re HoT. I've had other fans tell me that they aren't hated in Japan the way they are here but I just don't believe it, the thing the fans are chanting in Japanese translates as "go home" or "go away". They fouled up what should have been a terrific match. ==I am MUCH looking forward to Mox/Shota though!

You should check out the Hiromu / Finley and Shingo / Connors single matches from one of the Road to Dontaku. Hiromu / Finley was actually really good and better than Tsuji / Finley and Nemeth / Finley.

Kidd and shingo is a match of the year candidate, Gabe kidd is going to be the anti hero of NJPW, you can tell that the Japanese fans actually respect kidd because underneath the dispicable heel persona they know he actually loves the company and the Japanese style and eventually he will be a huge baby face House of tourettes needs to go, it's not heat it's just boring, and tanahashi is starting to annoy me, he's in all these big matches and he's supposed to be the president but he just allows hemorrhoids of torture to continue? It makes no sense, it just makes the company look bad

New Japan been pretty underwhelming this year there’s still been some great matches here and there but a lot of it is a chore to get through it’s made me go and try other promotions like Noah and dragongate

kidd and Shingo was moty candidate in my book. Jeff Cobb and ZSJ are just fantastic together in the ring. I think it's going to be the best rylvery in New Japan. Like Osprey and Shingo.. just never a bad match between ZSJ and Cobb. I'm tired of the House of Torture stuff it needs to end . We are all sick of it.. it's the same thing over and over..

It’s not just HOT booking getting booed though it’s the handling and booking of putting the title on Mox too. That’s not living up to expectations and everyone is sick of this horrendous booking

I tuned into the show for Kidd vs Shingo and absolutely loved it. Looking forward to Kingston vs Kidd. I turned off the main event. I don't like a bit of run-ins and interference. Hope Mox vs Shoto is good. It's a good story that they could have given a few more weeks to develop before the match.

House of Torture is only tolerable when they're jobbing to LIJ, but yea F this booking. Only way to save this angle with Moxley being the champ is if Shooter heel-turns on him and cheats to win the title. then re-forms a new version of Bullet Club where he kicks out the House of Torture, and War Dogs spin off and become their own thing and you take the show in a new direction, otherwise Why take the belt off Naito and put it on a guy who doesn't work in the company? terrible

Let Shota Umino be the one to take out HoT. It'd be killing two birds with one stone. He already mentioned something about it in the backstage comments. But sacrificing the whole HoT to give Shota Umino some validation, I think, is a good idea. It would be Shota beating Evil at the end. Then the War Dogs & Finlay come out as the Firing Squad type of deal and "liquidate" Evil and banish HoT for failing to get rid of Shota. Now Gedo just has to see this comment lolol.

Then Evil can get back to being great like he was prior to his turn. He could even rejoin with Sanada since they're both heels now. Not necessarily as a tag team, as they both have merit as singles stars.

Chase Owens and KENTA winning the tag titles happened most likely because Dontaku is the Bullet Club anniversary show so there's going to be some BC wins that don't really make sense,like Chase and Fale winning the tag titles a couple years ago in the middle of the Bishimon vs FTR series.

The reason I started watching you Japan was because of matches like Takagi vs Kidd. All the hokey interferences that house of torture does is why I stopped watching WWE.
