Shamus that's what is remarkable! Same director but feels like two different ones. Thief is a piece of old junk. Heat is a one-time strike of genius! Mann's Collateral (later movie) isn't on the same level neither... so it's not like Mann's mastery grew from Thief to Heat, cause it doesn't appear to continue to grow or even persist to Collateral. Weird.

I'm an editor. Worked in Hollywood for 7 years, been doing it for 17. The hardest thing to learn when I first started out was not what to keep in, but what to cut. It's instinctive in the beginning to fall in love with certain edits/cuts, and not want to let them go... but you HAVE to. This was really interesting to watch.
@Novastar.SaberCombat
@Novastar.SaberCombat 8 ай бұрын
Storytelling for the screen is definitely more about cutting everything right down to the core elements. But I freely admit, it would've been cool to have a LITTLE more information in the theatrical version. Some of these scenes set up payoffs pretty darn well, and barely took 6-12 seconds.

@Paul Blackman Those kinds of robberies wouldn't have really happened in the 90s, either. The kinds of heists where criminal gangs smash over armoured trucks and drill through the floors of banks, you only really see in countries like Brazil. Mann was basing his characters off 1960s figures. But the story and how it's delivered, is timeless. I wouldn't focus too much on the technology.

@davidlean1060
@davidlean1060 4 жыл бұрын
Why make your film longer when cutting it makes it twice as concise and therefore twice as gripping? Don't assume these decisions, especially when made by a superb film maker like Mann, are made only because they think the audience may need to get home early. From what I see, the cuts seen here make sense. The clip of Neil and Eady in the car for example. There is no new information being shown there. We have already seen her give him the cold shoulder, we already know how she feels. That's why those decisions are made by a guy like Mann.

If you string together Thief, Heat, Colatteral and Miami Vice the show, Michael Mann basically is the godfather fo GTA
@shamusbob7969
@shamusbob7969 4 жыл бұрын
Yesss, someone who gets it. I think Sam and Dan Houser said they wanted to be filmmakers before they started making videogames, but Michael Mann is one of their biggest inspirations. Along with Walter Hill's The Warriors (Which is why almost every gang has an outfit in the older games) hell if you actually look at it, it seems they built the GTA games to be set in The Warriors universe. Another movie Director they love to reference is William Friedkin, the Director who made The Exorcist. He made The French Connection, and To Live and Die in LA. GTA 4 has two missions, one where you chase a train in a car like in The French Connection, and To Live and Die in Aldernay being another mission. They also made the achievement To Live In Die In Los Santos when you beat GTA 5. Friedkin's To Live and Die In LA was called a Miami Vice rip off but he actually says he didn't mean to rip off Michael Mann, and they're actually friends, and not only that but Tangerine Dream first worked with Friedkin, who then worked in Mann on Thief, who finally worked with Rockstar Games for GTA 5 (They made the soundtrack which is why that one has the chase music I believe) GTA is like a movie-buff's love letter to other movie-buffs. I don't think I'd love movies as much without the GTA series and I don't think I'd love the GTA series as much without the movie references.

true, it kind of downplays the tragedy of it. Like its a very standard, show up and big muscly mafia guys with bats are at your house asking you casually about stuff they want to know. Its like something out of Licence To Kill or any mafia film, didn't fit with the rest of how great Heat was I think, especially because removing this scene leaves it to the imagination what happened which makes it much sadder.

My thought was always that Trejo really couldn't shake off the cops, he ended up going home where he was ambushed, and then got tortured for the information. Which led to the cops being tipped off. In this deleted scene, Trejo actually has a chance to warn Neil. It's too out of character to not warn him. Trejo was smart enough to know Waingro was a maniac by that point. He was also aware Van Zant wanted to kill them. In my opinion, he would've told Neil right then and there, then Neil and the crew would've come over and helped kill Waingro. There's just no way Trejo wouldn't at least warn them. I know he was afraid they would harm Anna, but there was no guarantee that wouldn't happen anyway. Plus Trejo had a better shot if he had his crew with him. There was no way for Van Zant and Waingro to check if the robbery was happening before Trejo and the crew got back to the house to save Anna. So glad that was cut out. Most of these scenes are better not being in the movie. It just goes to show how spot on that editing was.

The scene cruising by the bank as the alarms click off should have been kept. Adds to the high tech professionalism of the crew. Other scenes(home life) could have been cut to make room. Just my 20/20 hindsight.

@@MultiLiverpool1 The Tom Sizemore scenes add something - It shows how he is a thrillseeker who is able to compartmentalise his family life, mirroring how he later uses a girl for a human shield. If it stayed in the film, it contrasts with Hanna and McCauly - the former whose personal life is a mess which he uses work as an escape from, and the latter who has no personal life but his work. Removing this Jeremy Piven scene takes something away from the film - When you watch it, McCauly tells him to take his shirt off and Piven puts on a weird expression. It feels like something is missing, and it's this scene. I personally think it's also badass, because McCauly isn't issuing an overt threat, but stating that he's an obsessive psycho, as a matter of fact. The scene circling the bank doesn't really add anything to the story, but it rounds out Dennis Haysbert's character, Breedon, and his situational confidence as a professional getaway driver. The scene between DeNiro and Jon Voight shows that Breedon's widow will be financially supported. The scene in the car with McCauly and Eady absolutely adds something - It shows the journey of his character, as he learns to care about others on a human level. Without it, his inner 'transformation' isn't so clear.

The transponder scene and Trejo shoudn't have been dropped.
@KutWrite
@KutWrite 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the transponder added anything important. It might've broken Mann's desired rhythm. Trejo was a good scene for a regular movie. In this one, though, I think it was better for us to imagine what happened to him. Plus, the scene shows him darting out of the room. that detracts from his gutsy character, who we later see apparently stood up under the torture and gave 'em nothing, plus had the pride to "go out" with a bullet instead of slowly or in a police hospital room. My thoughts, anyway.

I'm glad they removed these scenes. They're not bad but I feel each of them hurts the pacing of the movie. And the Waingro-Trejo one gives away half the plot early. Yeah, you got the sense that something was off but you didn't know for certain what Trejo did or that Waingro was the one who made him. Besides, I feel it was better as a background event than an onscreen one.

I remember thinking Tom Sizemore had his role and character cut the most. In the theatrical cut he’s kept very enigmatic. These scenes flesh him out more but ultimately right that they kept the focus on De Niro and Kilmer. Don’t necessarily think these were all cut for time as Mann has had opportunities to put these back in and hasn’t so suspect this is more for pacing and structural reasons.

Van Zant's mooks were tipped off, and Trejo was the weak link. They were waiting for him at his house, as well as the "nazi guy" (Waingro). Breeden really slid into his role easily. Love the little smile he give when Michael say there no cop reaction time since they cut the alarm system off. He thinking Neil always runs a professional grew. Why didn't Trejo tell Neil that Waingro was holding his wife hostage. He erroneously thought he'd save his life and his wife if he sold out Neil. Despite this betrayal, Neil was still was going to call a medic to help Trejo when Trejo refused him and ask him to mercy kill him, knowing his wife was already dead.

He could have got Nate to sort Waingro . Plus they should have left the scene with Trejo in . And the way to rob the bank should have being put in
@ITIsFunnyDamnIT
@ITIsFunnyDamnIT 5 жыл бұрын
Neil couldn't do that because of all the trouble Waingro caused his crew which were like his family. It would have ate up at him had he not killed Waingrow. An he walked away from his girlfriend after he saw Vincent out there, he walked away from her ( thus he didn't get so attached to her that he was willing to go to prison for her, he'd rather die, and that's what he did ). It sucked seeing him get killed but than you wouldn't really have a story if the ending had not been tragic.
