This is the second half of my trip on the Amtrak Cardinal. This begins in Prince, West Virginia and we travel to Baltimore, Maryland. It features the roughest track of the trip as we travel on the Buckingham Branch Railroad and its jointed rail. We also see a locomotive swap at Union Station in Washington D.C.

The 182 milepost indicates 182 miles from the old Fort Monroe military base in Newport News where mileposts 0.0 was. It's also an original C&O mileposts. The frequency for NS was 160.950. Great video and the info about the BB locomotive was correct. Their symbol was BB Z620. I hear so many people complain about Buckingham's rail but I've rode it and love the bumpy train ride. It's also one of the few lines where you can catch trains running full speed on jointed rail dating back to the 40's and 30's. Unfortunately the rail is planned to be replaced between 2023 and 2025. For some people it won't be an unfortunately.
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information. I had no idea about Ft. Monroe. I tried to find the NS frequency but ended up just using the scan function and hoping. Ironically, it's the same frequency as in my neck of the woods. As for the rail, parts of it weren't bad, but it certainly did have parts that were jarring. I could see it being nostalgic for a scenic ride.

Is Buckingham Branch replacing all the jointed rail on the Amtrak portion? I am guessing with money from VDOT?
@douglasengle2704

I hope they replace the sub ballast as well. It's the sub ballast that supports the train. You can have smooth looking continues rail and it will ride very rough if the sub ballast is worn out. Trains maybe able to run 79 mph on that section if the signaling is up to that speed.

Thank you for an excellent video ! I live in the U.K and am fortunate to travel frequently to the United States. I really like Amtrak, and have travelled on most of their long distance routes, and very frequently on the North East corridor. The Cardinal is one on my favourite trains ! Why ? It covers a wonderful part of your country with such historical connections. It is essential to buy sleeping accommodation, and I have always used a roomette in a Viewliner 1 car - not sure if the consist of The Cardinal now has a Viewliner II in its formation, but I prefer the private toilet facility in the earlier Viewliner cars. Do make your next long distance Amtrak trip on the California Zephyr - truly wonderful ! Many thanks.

Thank you so much Anthony. I really do appreciate it. I'm hopeful to take the California Zephyr or Empire builder in the next 2-3 years (it's tough getting time off from work). I am going to take the Coast Starlight (San Francisco [Emeryville], California to Los Angeles) next summer. I'm really looking forward to that trip. I hope you continue to enjoy Amtrak and all the places it goes. Let me know if you'll ever be in Cincinnati and I'd love to get your thoughts on the system. I hope you have a great day.

Used the Cardinal for years to get from our home in Philadelphia to my family home near Charleston. At one Christmas trip, starting snowing when we got on in Trenton about 8 pm Christmas Day, no sleepers, not until Washington, at midnight we had to walk in rail yard carrying baby and our gear to the sleepers attached at the rear. Equipment was frozen, delay in departure, no heat in sleepers and no lights. We were kidding with our son we are camping on wheels. About 2 am, we hit something. My husband in upper bunk, he is tossed on the floor (net was broken). My husband tries to find porter or anyone, we are alone in both sleepers. Two hours later we go to the club car and they are making coffee and hot chocolate. Then we hear that in the tunnel there was a wall of ice, it broke the windshield, but no one was hurt. We arrived in Charleston six hours late, cold, sleep deprived, and that trip we flew home. Later I traveled with our son, and later my husband and I have enjoyed the trip. One thing you have to count on, NEVER, NEVER 12:16 on schedule.

Good stuff!! I've ridden on the Cardinal in the '80's when equipment included Heritage cars. I was in a Roomette which sat & slept 1 person & travelled once between Chicago & NYC. Meals were not included in the fare-but complimentary juice, tea, coffee, & a newspaper was provided 6-9 AM. The route was different then going Southeast from Chicago missing Indianapolis. A daily local train (The Hoosier State) carried passengers between Chicago & Indy. It's a longer route between Chicago & NYC than The Lake Shore Ltd. It was then & still is a train which runs only 3 X's/wk. It's a great experience to go once. I'm not a fan of Flexible Dining. Meals cooked, not microwaved, on long distance trains East of the MS River are provided only on The Auto Train. They are also provided for sleeper car passengers on The Sunset Ltd, Coast Starlight, CA Zephyr, Southwest Chief, & Empire Builder. I wouldn't travel by night in coach. It was fun in coach when I was a kid. Peace, quiet, & privacy is paramount for me in long distance trains.

A couple of notes on things for which to go on The Cardinal to West Virginia. On October 13 -15, 2023. Hinton, WV holds its annual Hinton Railroad Days, a nice event for rail fans. Then the third Saturday in October, the State of West Virginia holds Bridge Day at the New River Gorge Bridge. Traffic on half the bridge is shut down, and pedestrians are allowed to cross the bridge. They also allow base jumping and bungee jumping from the bridge. These are couple of events worth considering.

The Cardinal used to run Superliners including a lounge car, but those were sacrificed due to equipment shortages and to extend the eastern terminus from Washington to NYC. In fact, the Cardinal is one of the first trains to have its couches reassigned to other trains when there are equipment shortages. That is why they currently consist is two Amfeet II couches, a cafe car, and then the two Viewliner couches. And whenever I do a test booking, the train is always reported to be near capacity, often reported at 85% to 90%+ full.
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info. I'd rather the Cardinal terminate in DC and have Superliners than its current consist. I figured it would be first to get picked over since it seems to be a route Amtrak doesn't want to keep.
@TheFarix2723
@TheFarix2723 8 ай бұрын
@@nkyrailfan Well, there are more direct routes between NYC and Chicago (Lakeshore Limited) and DC and Chicago (Capital Limited), so the board sees the Cardinal as a redundant route. Maybe if the Cardinal had a different western terminus (DC, Cincinnati, St. Louis), it wouldn't be treated so poorly. However, the Cardinal did get a $500,000 FRA grant as part of the Corridor ID Program to restore it to daily service. The Sunset Limited received a similar grant for the same reason. We will see if either pans out.
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan 8 ай бұрын
I wish the Cardinal could be split in two from Cincinnati or maybe Huntington , WVa and terminating in DC in the east. I think it's a worthwhile route in both directions but the timing of it really limits it's usefulness for people. If it left at a decent time, I'd happily take it to Chicago. We'll see what changes take place with the new Amtrak funding.

@@TheFarix2723 Amtrak is expected to finish their FY 2021 refurbishment program by the end of 2024 bringing 12 wrecked Superliner cars back into service. For the Sunset Limited to restore back to a daily service Amtrak will have to scratch up three train sets. Maybe, maybe not. Cross your fingers Amtrak doesn't suffer another derailment of Superliner cars... Hopefully, I didn't jinx Amtrak...

I rode the cardinal in 2021 from Baltimore to Chicago in coach and loved it, although it's certainly not for everyone. The seats were comfy with generous recline and leg supports, which in combination with the pillow and blanket I brought myself made for a reasonably decent night of sleep. I ended up going through 5 different seatmates, which for some people might be a turn off, but I actually ended up having some very pleasant conversations with the 3 of them which I sat with the longest. We were nearly an hour late at points in West Verginia but made up the delay by the time we pulled into Chicago. Thanks to a special deal Amtrak ran it was only $50 which was great value. Thanks for sharing your experience, it made for a fun watch.

I am surprised that you did not talk about the Blue Ridge Mountain Tunnel. Although the train passes through the "new" tunnel constructed in 1944, you can almost see the eastern portal of the original tunnel, which is now part of a biking trail. I've travelled the Cardinal many times between Philadelphia and Cincinnati, and I agree that the train really gets to rocking and rolling on the Buckingham Branch!

Outstanding video parts 1 & 2! I've noticed the problem with the roomette for filming is you are only aware of the scenery from that side of the train. You miss large sections of the route unless you are aware of them in advance view them from the other other side of the train. This is ware the full bedroom where there is a window on the door to see the other side of the train can make a critical difference for filming so you are aware of what is going on that side of the train. The Viewliner suspension did a very impressive job of dealing with rough track. I'd take the Cardinal between Montgomery WV and Alexandria VA when I was going to WV Tech there for electrical engineering. WV Tech campus was a large section of the town on the non-river side of the tracks, that you didn't see from your river side roomette. My civil engineering friend John Carrier and I would rail fan the area. Riding the Cardinia in the mid 1980s the heritage fleet passenger cars would jar so much on the CSX coal tracks they might make me sick. I"d spend all my time in the Amfleet lounge car able to easily see out both side of the train. The Amfleet car had a much more solid shell better able to combat the impacts of the rough track with much better suspension than the heritage fleet cars. The Viewliner you were on appears to be a mammoth improvement on those Amfleet cars. I rode the Cardinal 2 or 3 times and I never got to ride on the southern tracks east of Hawk's Nest. Now going over the Hawk's Nest railroad bridge was something I dreamed about doing so I would of liked to have done both. The Cardinal may be useful for its intermediate stops more than any other eastern long distance train. It's hard to justify taking it between Chicago and Washington D.C. or NYC over other Amtrak sleeper service trains. It gets you into a unique passenger train experience and through West Virginia. The uniquer part of the trip is West Virginia with the Clifton Forge VA area being somewhat a continuation or West Virginia. Once into the Virginia Valley it's of a different interest, not that its better or worse, but different. The Buckingham branch was horrible track ten years ago when Amtrak's Cardinal was the only regular train using it out of Clifton Forge. There most of been some track improvements and that VIewliner is likely doing a lot to get through it as well as it did. You really need new track sub ballast to improve the track bed for better track behavior. That will make it fit for smooth travel. Continues rail would be installed as a matter of course because its much easier to install than sectioned rail. Thank you for a very good video. Your equipment did a very good job with the night lighting around the Cincinnati passenger station! It looked beautiful! The back story these places were very much appreciated!

Thanks, Douglas. I'm very happy to hear you enjoyed the video. I agree the Cardinal is not for folks looking to take it from Chicago to DC or NYC or vice versa, but I certainly see the usefulness for the WV and VA towns. I recently had my first Amtrak trip. I rode the Blue Water in coach from East Lansing, MI to Chicago (that's a 4-hour ride) and business class back. Business class seating is better than coach. However, I can't picture myself in those seats for 24 hours or more. That would be absolute agony. I would rather get a roomette. But for the price and the time it takes, in my view, taking a plane is more practical for cross-country trips.

great video! the symbol for the train at 33:11 is Amtrak 171 or NS 013 and 37:37 is actually train 90 the Palmetto not 186. you can tell because 90 has a baggage car and long-distance Amfleet 2 coaches while 186 does not have a baggage car and uses all Amfleet 1 coaches. given the timing, I would guess that 186 was on the other side of your train on track 25 with 90. I enjoyed my trip on the Cardinal in March 2023 (except for bouncing around on the BB). I rode in coach from Chicago to DC and I really enjoyed the small towns and scenery but I 100% agree that it would have been great to actually get a chance to step off an explore these places like Clifton Forge without being stranded for 2 days thanks to the tri-weekly schedule. the tri-weekly schedule also means that cities like Cincinnati and Indianapolis get terrible Amtrak service despite their size. my sleep in coach on the Cardinal was also a lot worse than my coach sleeps on the Silver Meteor and Silver Star thanks to the lack of a dedicated car for overnight passengers. it's also way slower than the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited as a Chicago-Northeast train option but for $30 on a promotional USA rail pass, it's well worth riding at least once for the history and scenery. It's also the only long-distance train to primarily use ex-C&O tracks.

I haven't ridden the Cardinal in awhile though I have many times. I usually board in Connersville, Indiana and leave my car there on the way to Washington DC. If you are traveling to White Sulfur Springs or one of the towns along the route the Cardinal makes total sense. No airports anywhere close to those places. On the westbound, seems like we would always fall behind schedule but make it up between Huntington and Cincinnati. The train seems to now have a very limited consist. Those Amfleet cars are pretty uncomfortable for me, I imagine the jointed rail is pretty noticeable in those cars. The Horizon coaches are better riding and roomier but they seem to be off the Cardinal in your video. It looks like the lounge car with the top glass is gone. That was the real highlight of the CardinaI. Really liked it years ago when it still had heritage sleepers and a diner. One last note, I am almost positive that Ivy City yard has a turntable for the diesels. For me, it is faster and easier to go up to Garret and go to DC on that route. An hour north versus an hour south from my house.
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan Жыл бұрын
I agree with you regarding the smaller WVa towns, and for folks living there, it's great to have since it comes through at a reasonable hour and gets you to DC at a decent hour. I just wish they could schedule it to come through the western half at a decent time. I'd love to take it to Chicago, but it makes zero sense to do so with its schedule. Hopefully, with all the money Amtrak is receiving, the Cardinal gets an upgrade. You're right about the turntable. A satellite view shows a turntable at the very northeast corner of the yard.

Amtrak offers on promotion the 30 day Amtrak Rail Pass riding in coach, especially for seniors for less than $500. Think of Amtrak as not just a transportation and hospitality company, think of Amtrak as an opportunity of not just seeing America but to EXPERIENCE America. Layover in any town or city will do with any of the trains if only to visit the local fishing hole. However these towns and cities have museums and B&Bs usually within walking distance from the Amtrak station. When riding through these cities and towns I wish I would spend a day there, well do... That river looked like a good place to spend a day fishing, that railroad museum in that small town looked like a good place to spend a day... If you don't have 30 days, well spend the week or two you do have on that 30 day Rail Pass... Avoid Amtrak steep sleeper fares, ride in coach and plan accordingly...

You made great videos. I have rode Amtrak many times. Cardinal, Texas Eagle, Silver Meteor, Sunset Limited, Pennsylvanian, Northeast Regional, Empire Service, and the former Broadway Limited. Generally speaking, its the best way to travel. Although, the only major issue I ever had was on the Cardinal. I was on my way home to Philadelphia from San Antonio, TX in September 2021 By the way, going to San Antonio, I took the Cardinal from Philadelphia to Chicago. Then changed trains to the Texas Eagle. Everything was going too smooth. Trip out went well. Both trains were on time. Even though Texas Eagle had shuttle bus service from Fort Worth to San Antonino due to track work. Which worked out better for me. The bus got me into San Antonio 3 hours ahead of the train schedule. As for the return trip, started off good, until I got on the Cardinal. It left Chicago on time, which blew my mind because I'm use to it being late. However, some place east of the Indianapolis, a freight train derails. I believe we waited about 3 hours roughly to continue on. Then later, we end up sitting in a freight yard for about 5 or 6 hours. Maybe longer due to another freight train being stuck at I believe was Cincinnati. The Cardinal was scheduled to be in Philadelphia at 8:30 pm on Friday. It actually got there 5:30 am Saturday. There's almost always an adventure on Amtrak. I do miss riding the Broadway Limited. Thanks for allowing me to share. Have a good day.

I think it was more the rattling of the car than the tracks themselves. When the car wasn't rattling it wasn't bad and almost faded into the background like white noise. Also, since I didn't have any sleep, that probably played a little role in my disdain of the section.

As I previously mentioned, I rode the 51 Cardinal from DC to Cincinnati, the rough track, the being late (a few hours late,) crappy food, and 18 hours in my Coach seat didn't bother me. But I guess my military service and several combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan made me a very tolerant man.
@nkyrailfan
@nkyrailfan Жыл бұрын
I would certainly say your service helps in that regard. I also bet traveling from DC to Cincinnati is not as bad since you get the rough trackage out of the way and then have the beautiful scenery. Plus, you're not leaving in the middle of the night like you are if you travel from Cincinnati or Indianapolis for instance. As for the trackage, who knows, It may have just been a while since they had replaced it and all the joints were getting worn out.

@@nkyrailfan last replacement was between 1938-48 which was probably a replacement of the original 1850 rail. Various spots have already been replaced and all will be replaced by 2025 except for the 9 mile section between Orange and Gordonsville. BB recently received a federal grant for rail, bridge and crossing replacements as well as tunnel upgrades. All of it is for the North Mtn sub between Gordonsville and Clifton Forge which is what Amtrak runs on. The orange brach which is the 9 mile section that connects to NS wasn't mentioned in the grant but BB already put alot of money in to fix track so trains could go 60 instead of 10. They fixed ties and ballast and cleared right of way but didn't put in new rail.

@@charlottesvillerailfan Is there any local traffic on the BB? From the video, it seems still to be used by CSX for empties returning from Newport News. CSX got quite a deal... sold to BBRR, retain trackage rights and gets the state of VA to upgrade the track.
@charlottesvillerailfan

I haven't gotten to watch the whole video and will later today but the CSX 804 West was G628-27 unknown origin and destination. Idk if you guys met the CSX 5122 West but that was E118-28 Newport News, VA to Peach Creek, WV. CSX trains that run on the BB call signals the same way CSX does, except without the symbol which for railfan, sucks. Examples BB tracks: CSX 804 West clear East Afton CSX tracks: CSX G628-27 lead locomotive CSXT 804 West, clear East Afton.

Thanks, NKY Railfan, for a beautifully shot, beautifully edited video. As for your comment that Amtrak's long-distance trains aren't worth it, you do, of course, have every right to your opinion. I believe that Amtrak--all of Amtrak---indeed has its rightful place in America's transportation system. This is especially true for its long-distance trains that provide transportation to rural areas without other common-carrier service . . . as illustrated by your own video. Amtrak's problem--as it has been since its inception in 1971--is that it cannot take full advantage of its system as it has never been given sufficient budget and sufficient institutional support as rail systems in other countries are consistently given. It's deplorable that Cincinnati is served only in the middle of the night and only three times a week; but that's the best that Amtrak can do, given its circumstances. You're right: Amtrak can serve shorter markets very well. However, in fact, every one of its long-distance trains *also* serves intermediate and shorter markets (as does "The Cardinal"), and the long-distance trains provide this multi-level service through the same train. If we go with the thought that only shorter distances make sense for transportation and government support of transportation, then we certainly would not have rural interstates that stretch for hundreds of miles through sparse population. One final thought: Before you condemn and dismiss long-distance trains out of hand, you might try one. See, for example, what "The Empire Builder" and "The Southwest Chief" mean to the small communities that appreciate and use their trains. Thanks for considering my take on this topic. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the detailed response Jay. I do appreciate it. I agree with your points for the most part. I would love it if Amtrak were given the money and infrastructure (I would like to see Amtrak use eminent domain and place tracks next to CSX/NS/BNSF/UP so it no longer needed to use the freight rails) needed to improve and increase service, but given the politics in America and lobbying forces against Amtrak, I don't see that happening. As for your point about long distance trains serving intermediate markets, I would argue a hub-and-spoke bus service from medium size cities would better serve many of the communities served by Amtrak. I think partnering with regional, state and local agencies to provide bus service to those surrounding areas and reducing the number of small town stops on trains like the Cardinal would improve efficiency, decrease trip time and enable more people to ride at a reasonable cost. Granted extremely isolated places like Thurmond, WV would likely not fit into that model, but they wouldn't need to given the extremely low ridership. Given the high cost-to-revenue (I believe the Cardinal is the #2 worst train in terms of revenue), I feel that money could be used elsewhere in the system more efficiently. I think the only way to improve Amtrak service outside the NEC is to make it more efficient to draw more riders and more revenue. Unfortunately, I think the only way to do that is to cut service to some spots to decrease trip times to make it more attractive to those in larger markets. I think your comment about the interstate highway system traveling through rural areas highlights my premise. The interstate travels through those areas, but does not have exits for every small town along the way. It may have an entrance/exit ramp every 10-20 miles (even further in extremely sparsely populated areas like Wyoming and Montana), which means anyone living in one of those communities must travel a bit before being able to enter the highway. I was unable to find stats regarding how many people use Amtrak's longer routes for intermediate service for cities less than 200 miles away. I think that number should have a role in dictating service levels. If there are a high number of people going from Staunton, VA to Alexandria, VA for instance then it would dictate keeping both stops. However, if most of the people getting on at Staunton are heading to D.C. or points further north, I would argue that means service stops should be cut and someone would be better suited taking a bus to a place like Charlottesville and then riding. Lastly, I was actually planning two Amtrak trips before writing this. One is to the New England area via the Ethan Allen north and then the Vermonter back to NYC. The second is a trip on the Coast Starlight from Emeryville to Los Angeles. I do plan to ride the California Zephyr and the Southwest Chief at least once each because I think the views are worth the extended trip time. To sum it up, I am all for Amtrak and wish it would receive the funding needed, but I don't see that happening and until it can become more of a revenue generator, there will always be those fighting against it. I think strong passenger rail service benefits everyone by forcing bus and air travel to remain somewhat competitive. I look forward to further Amtrak discussion in the future and hope you have a great day Jay.

I'm not sure, Patrick. Because the building doubles as a museum and event space, it has a very large parking lot. However, I'm not sure what the rule is for leaving your car there for more than a few days. I wouldn't think it would be that big of an issue, but I would double check before doing it.

For those of you that don't want to watch this trip in real time, the train is finally back in civilization in Charlottesville at 27:32, and ready to head north (so start watching there). Then you can save more time and skip from the arrival in DC (really the end of the trip) at 37:43 to his final comments at 48:07.

The Cardinal route itself, though long, it's (IMO) not really meant to be a end to end trip. The portion from Huntington, WV to Charlottesville, VA, especially the New River Gorge is beyond my favorite portion of the ride. It unfortunately runs over some low density lines that are not maintained at higher speeds thus costing it time, like Chicago to Cincinnati has no 79 mph speeds. Overall though, it's one of my favorite routes.
