Narada speaks with American singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist who began his career with four siblings in the 1970s band the Five Stairsteps. Skilled as a guitarist and bassist, Burke continued to work for the Dark Horse label as a session musician, while burgeoning a solo career of his own. During this period he contributed instrumentation to songs by a diverse range of artists such as Sly & the Family Stone, Natalie Cole, Billy Preston, Terry Callier, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross, and Gladys Knight and more. In 1981, Burke released his self-produced follow-up solo album, You're the Best, but it was his third album, Changes, which appeared the following year, that made a more significant impact.[2] This album included the singles "Hang Tight" and his signature hit "Risin' to the Top," a big success in Chicago.[2] The latter song has become a popular sampling choice for hip hop artists, having been borrowed by artists such as Doug E Fresh ("Keep Risin to the Top"), Big Daddy Kane ("Smooth Operator"), LL Cool J ("Around the Way Girl"), Pete Rock & CL Smooth ("Take You There"), Mary J. Blige ("Love No Limit"), O.C. ("Born 2 Live"), and Sean Price ("Sabado Gigante"), "Rising to the Top" appeared in the soundtrack for the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, on fictional radio station Vice City for Lovers. Throughout the '80s and into the '90s, Burke continued his session and production work for artists such as Peabo Bryson, The O'Jays, The Jones Girls and Keith Sweat, and in 1998 released his last album to date Nothin' but Love, containing the hit "Indigenous Love", which was popular in the United Kingdom via the Expansion Records Label

@@brodocbetty4856 Good Evening I agree. I learned that Kenni and the surviving members have been asked many times to have a documentary done on them but they refused due to them keeping parts of their lives private.

Finally! I grew up listening to and seeing the Five Stairsteps. I actually experienced what Keni Burke related about his father playing the bass at their stage shows because they performed in Cleveland, Ohio regularly. I also remember Keni playing the "Tighten Up" baseline on a bass that was as big as he was at the time. We were going crazy because he was killing it! Lastly, it was great to hear the background story on how the " 2nd Resurrection" album came to be. Definitely a stand alone classic! RIP Clarence Burke jr.

I saw Walter Jackso at the Skyway Lounge in Chicago in 1974. He was on his crutches it was actually part of his act to "fall" or "almost fall". The crowd went crazy ! He was brilliant ! You could have heard a pin drop when he was singing, I'll never forget that night as long as I live !

On god keni is the unsung bass goat. All night is one of the hardest songs gs I’ve ever tried to nail. It’s so obscenely fast and tight. Man is a master and I’m hard pressed to find more technical chops in the game.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving one of the most underrated, and unappreciated bassists, musicians, songwriters, and producers on the planet a platform!!!! Larry Graham mentioned Keni as one of HIS FAVORITE BASS PLAYERS!!!! Despite his amazing discography, Keni's name is barely mentioned when discussing great bassists!!! Yeah, the bass line on "Rising to the Top" is one of the COLDEST BASS GROOVES IN HISTORY!!! I love the song that Keni played on The Ramsey "Routes" project!!! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLOBrderms_UlX0.html What a FANTASTIC INTERVIEW!!!
