The family has a loathing of rear mainsheets so I have a centre main conversion. There is nothing wrong with the rear arrangement and i'm sure purists will be tutting into their cans of Sikkens, but the main reasons are:
1. if there are two of you sailing the boat, the rear main can get in the way. eg. those big gybes on the way down to Salcombe were easy with one on the tiller and another controlling the main.
2. I like being close to the mainsheet cleat; less chance it does the wrong thing.
3. when sailing alone (especially when the wind gets up) I like one hand on the tiller and one on the sheet. One forward, one back just feels better. Great for playing the main over a swell.

N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-nineteen..... An idea for a video for you - how about sometime this summer, I pop over to Galmpton, and you can do a side-by-side comparison of Shrimper 19 and Cape Cutter 19? They are so alike, and yet so different...

I agree mid mainsheet is the best! We have the same setup on our post boat.

I very nearly bought a post boat before we stumbled on Vicar. How are you getting on with it?

@@Morningvicar it's my first boat! I have just finished my RYA 1 and 2 with RTYC. Three family sails in the bay completed to date since passing. Loving life afloat. Looking at sailing the Dart soon! Keep up the great videos, really helpful for us locals and new folks to sailing, 👍.

How did you find out that the front block of the Laser-style set-up is 'anchored' well enough to the boat? I see bolts in the base of the set-up but did you use any 'back plates' to be sure, including the traverse wooden plank? (English isn't my first language, so there's a chance I'm using the wrong words for the technical part of my question).

Nothing wrong with putting the main sheet where it's convenient, but is there really any need to continually hold onto it like you're sailing a sunfish? Cleat the thing down and leave it for goodness sake

Hi. This is almost word for word the conversation I've just had with my Dad (he said "bloody Laser" instead of Sunfish.) :) In reality, the mainsheet will be cleated most of the time.
