Hi Paul - I'm sure you'll have thought of this but how about an alternator on your outboard for giving the battery a top up? I have an inboard and last winter fitted a second battery with a 'Blue Sea Systems Add a Battery Kit' which controls charging of the batteries, giving priority to the starting battery until it is fully charged and only then switching automatically to charge the second battery. Not entirely relevant to your situation but I thought it might be of interest.

Hi. Yeah, I priced up having a charging coil retrofitted. Best part of £400 all in. It’s still a possibility but I’m probably going to go for more solar instead.

Excellent. I’m sure I remember Morning Vicar from Emsworth circa 2004/5. Owned by Rodney? Is this the same boat. I sailed Greenshank (350) at the time.

I really, really loved that. Totally underestimated boats, in my view. Maybe the last reef would have prevented some of the weather helm upwind? Would having the traveller further up windward make it point higher?
@Morningvicar
@Morningvicar 24 күн бұрын
Yes, another reef would have made it a lot more comfortable upwind and no slower. We were overpowered upwind but underpowered downwind, we didn’t want to think about reefing between legs. Would have been a different story if we weren’t trying to win 😊

Hi - another interesting video! I have a question - how much play do you have betwen the mast and tabernacle? On my shrimper it seems excessive but it may be normal. There is probably about 5 mm of free play on each side, which seems a lot to me.

That was a quick first reef. Impressive! (Helps having some crew). One question. At 16:00 you talk about keeping a full jib along with the two reefs, and you say "And not a hint of weather helm". But if you did have too much jib out, that would produce *lee* helm, wouldn't it? I ask because I sometimes get a fair bit of weather helm on my Gypsy, & I'm still trying to work out how to best balance the sails in stronger winds. (Mast rake could also be a factor).
@Morningvicar
@Morningvicar 28 күн бұрын
It's always really quick when you don't have to do it yourself:) You're right...Too much jib would give me lee helm, but it never gets that unbalanced. In fact i've never felt lee helm on the Shrimper. Mast rake is a big factor. With low tension rigs like ours, as the wind rises and loads increase on the mainsail, the rig is pulled back, moving the centre of effort aft and giving more weather helm. I think high peaked gaffs like ours amplify this effect. A full jib (hard in upwind) keeps the rig more forward and counteracts it a little. In my case, the jib is very new but the mainsail is knackered; it has stretched and has a large belly in it (much like me) this also moves the centre of effort aft and increases drag=weather helm. If i were to casually glance at my own rig sailing upwind in moderate conditions i would say that the jib is over tight and the main is often backwinded, it doesn't look fast but its balanced and I think its the most efficient way to use the two sails i have at the moment. What i really need is a new main....my reefing regime may well change then.
@tobygoessailing
@tobygoessailing 28 күн бұрын
@@Morningvicar That's really helpful, thanks v much. Hadn't thought about the effect of a low tension rig. And now I'm wondering about my mainsail! I think mine is fine, but are there some key signs for when a sail is losing shape? Or is it simply down to an experienced eye?
