It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZfaq experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, as we test a 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 Classic, also known as an Opel Vectra A. Hold onto your seats as we have to cope without a rev counter (again), deal with a slightly sloppy 1990s Vauxhall gearchange, realise that we are lacking a bit of power on hills, wonder about special edition wheeltrims and ramble on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

It's amazing how a car can stir so many memories. I've commented before on my dad's influence on montegos and maestro's... But this cavalier stirs memories of my 3 brothers and all around this time I remember the driveway having various Opel Manta GTE, ford Orion, Talbot sunbeam and a particularly glorious F reg Azure blue escort cabriolet. I never understand how some people don't love cars.

The Mk3 Cavalier really was a solid reliable car. Good accommodation, comfortable, great engines, economical, easy to service. The facelift looked the best as the 88 to 92 was a really smooth jelly mould like so many of the time. Comical is the perfect word for what Vauxhall described as their Full Size Airbag equipped steering wheel. I had it in my Mk3 Astra, which had no steering adjustment and gave me shoulder and neck ache over long distances. Still, the Vectra B looked very similar but crucially had some length added to the floor for rear legroom. The Cavalier was good enough to carry on, even the engines were unchanged for the Vectra, but the Ford Mondeo was so good that it effectively made the Cavalier feel old and lifeless in driving dynamics. There are 2.5 V6s out there, Sir. I bet that you can't wait to find one to review.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

The massive airbag in these old Cavaliers probably was bit comical, sir! The Vectra B was on the same platform, but I definitely don't like it as much. Great review Mr Lloyd, I think most Vauxhall’s of this era were great cars and surprisingly can all be bought for “No budget review” money with the exception of the Nova (or Opel Corsa A) which thanks to the Max power and rally folk of the 90’s and early 2000 have pushed the prices of Novas into Classic car money territory(over £1500). Great car. I have a Corgi Vanguards 4WD Turbo Cavalier Mark 3 model. In New Zealand we also had this as the Holden Vectra. We never had the 1.6 motor. Only the bigger engines. I think my Great Aunt used to have a purple or burgundy sedan one. My Math Teacher had a 1991 blue Opel Vectra GT liftback. They were were briefly sold as Opels in the early 1990s probably because its predecessor, the Holden Camira (Australian/New Zealand Mark 2 Cavalier) had been given a perhaps unfair reputation for unreliability and GM here went for a whole name change.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Funny you should mention that the Diesel was an Isuzu powerplant. Reminds me I read that the Opel Vectra version of the Mark 3 - we are talking petrol cars by the way - was sold in Japan through Isuzu. The 4WD Turbo version was an aborted Group A Homologation effort for rallying that never got off the ground, probably because GM - perhaps wisely given subsequent success in the BTCC and DTM - thought that touring cars were a better motorsports investment. The rear diff used in the 4WD Turbo was actually from a V8 racing Holden!

I feel this should have been sold here in the US! I do see the Vectra in the exterior styling, but ever since I have seen Vauxhall dealer video for this Cavalier on KZfaq, I have seen taken by it! Of course, it seems the ISP and stalks come right from Opel, and the GM on the valve cover says it all! The US Cavalier was based on your Mk2 Cavalier but I liked your styling much better! And that body style lasted about 12 model years in the US! It is rare to see a 30 yo Cavalier here, but one does show up from time to time! It also seems that the interior space was much larger than the US Cavalier, even our Mk2 Cavalier that came out for 1995! That is when GM dumped the 2.8 litre V6 for the 16 valve 4 as the top engine to which you could only get on a Z24. GM touted its US vehicles in the late 80's for having ABS standard on every vehicle. Took longer to add air bags as standard. Another smashing review!

According to my year 2000 Parker’s guide: “Special edition 1.8i Classic launched in Jun 1995 £11875. Trade prices similar to the LS” This is the last entry for the Cavalier. No mention of a 1.6. The Classic is not mentioned in their main prices guide. This one seems to be lower spec than the LS as that came with a Rev counter (and electric front windows I think). I think the holey headrests were to enable the rear passengers to see forwards. Which is supposed to help prevent car sickness. Or so I’ve been told. I have never driven a good one of these. I once got an SRi as a courtesy car. Rubbish. It had been thrashed. And my manager had one with a 1.6 ecomony 70hp engine. Completely gutless.

Well, the 1.8 Classic certainly exists as the last one ever made was at Festival of the Unexceptional last weekend! All the checks I have run have this car as a 1.6 and it has the same Classic badges as the 1.8 I saw, so it looks legitimate. The headrests with a big hole in them were not unique to Vauxhall, but they seem to not exist as a phenomenon any more. Ah resplendent in Satin Red Pearlescent paint. One of my favourite Vauxhall colours of the day. Those outgoing Cavaliers were great things - my dad had a Diplomat for a while when his Carlton was getting repaired after a bus hit it - and it was nippy, comfy and looked the part. Like you sir, the Vectra B never quite captured me the same. Cavalier to Vectra felt a bit like Merc 190 to C Class where the replacement just never felt as good as the outgoing model. @@zzhughesd , I prefer the Cavalier Mark III over the Vectra B, to be honest, sir, but a V6 Vectra B is actually quite an interesting car too, and I have driven one!

This vectra ( in europe) had allot of trusty owners. Just like the next model. But in 1995 for 30.000 Gulden ( dutch money from that time) you had allot of competition. Like: the mazda 626 hatchback with that special spoiler. The volkswagen passat The toyota Carina E.. Honda accord. Citroen Xantia Ford mondeo. And this vectra All for around 30.000 gulden in that time. I think you had better options than the Vauxhall/opel. And mostly the asian cars had allot more luxury to offer than the europeans for the same price. Like a/c 4 electric windows and power mirrors. If you wanted that in a european opel Volkswagen or ford you had to pay allot more

Yes, I am sure that there were absolutely loads of these around earlier on, won't there? A very crowded family car class in the 1990s, but the Cavalier was one of the most consistently popular models back then.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting yes it’s interesting..that allot of families hold On . even there were beter and prettier choices for the same price. But still many people and families choose the vectra/cavalier. Specially in the 90s. And even they had less options than lets say.. a 626… or a accord. Or not so good as a Toyota or not drive as good as a mondeo. Allot Of people didn’t care. They want their opel/Vauxhall. Their trustworthy Vectra. They know te car it’s good enough. So you saw them everywhere more than one in every street. Specially in Holland. ( my parents in law ). I remember the Harry potter film. All those vectra’s in te street

Another of my favourite cars ive had 3 mk3 cavs and 2 calibras .I believe classic is basic model those are not correct wheel trims.

The Classic was a run-out model right at the end of production, I think the base model for most of the time was the Envoy. I actually saw another Cavalier Classic today (a 1.8) in the same colour at Festival of the Unexceptional which did have the correct wheeltrims, these are off an Astra G, I believe. We would like to drive a Calibra, sir...

Those Hub Caps don't look original. They look off of an Astra G.
