It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZfaq experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1999 Audi A4 1.8 SE (B5), we deal with rather a high clutch, discuss factory parking sensors, try to spot legendary coolant reservoirs, get excited about instruments and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

Just before I left high school in 1999, my headmaster bought one of these, a car that stood out in pride of place in the car park next to the deputy heads Mondeo or Vectra. Excellent little review. As always Sir.

Splendid stuff. I had one of the first Avant's - a 96 SE model with this engine. Went everywhere across europe in all weathers without issue. Would happily jump into another tomorrow....

Thank you, Mr Pink! A very comfortable car, and the A4 Avant is a handsome beast as well. Funny how cheap these still seem to be.

From 2002 until 05, I had a 99 S reg pre facelift 2.4SE. It was a lovely looking car, well built, loved the interior & the V6 sounded glorious but for all it’s technology of 5v per cylinder, quad cams etc 165bhp was a bit underwhelming & it wasn’t the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever had. The rear legroom was appalling, however I’m 6ft 5” so I struggle in the back of most cars. Replaced it in 05 with an E39 530i msport which raised the bar considerably & I’ve had BMW’s ever since. Another excellent review sir 👏🏻

Yes, the rear space really is quite poor considering that the platform which underpins it is the same as the Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat. The V6 sounds a bit like the one in my 45 V6, they aren't known for being very powerful for the size. Glad you enjoyed the review!

I've had a couple of these now 1.8t quattro manuals, pick of the bunch. One I just picked up is a respectable 180ks for its age and reminds me how right audi got things from the early days

I have a review of the B5.5 Passat coming soon too, those are very similar to these B5 A4s. Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting, 180,000 kms sounds like it is barely run in.

Still, a very handsome car, which has aged very well. I remember seeing a 2.8 Quattro, finish in Burgundy metallic, almost purple, with a beige leather interior and wood trim on the dash and door cards, yet to my absolute horror, it still had manual rear windows, I guess electric rear windows, was still an optional extra.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

It is a bit disagreeable that the one you saw had a nice beige leather interior with wood and no electric rear windows, sir! Not really the sort of cost-cutting we like.

Great review sir. I owned a couple of contemporary VW Boras (effectively the booted Golf mk IV) which obviously share some VW group commonality with this car. The 1.8 petrol turbo you mention MUST have the cam belt changed absolutely bang on schedule as it’s very prone to failure and obviously catastrophic engine damage can ensue. The boot release mechanism you mention was also fitted to the Bora and I’m guessing the Passat too.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Жыл бұрын
Yes, the Bora and A3 were on a different platform from this, but the 1.8 engines were the same, of course. Definitely got to change those cambelts before or exactly when the service is due, I would agree. Those Boras are very rare these days, I quite like them, personally.

Ignition coils were prone to fail on the 1.8T, causing a severe misfire and reduced performance.

Yes ..the A4 set the design language with the exception of the deep grills for the next 10/15 years or so. @14:00 regarding the rear parking sensors, aren't those the converging small lights on the headliner near the rear window that were also fitted to German Astras of the same vintage? The idea was you looked in the rear vision mirror to watch the lights converge, sometimes with beeps.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Жыл бұрын
My mother's Mercedes runs a similar system of lights for the parking sensors, so I do know what you mean. That has a reversing camera and front parking sensors, so you don't necessarily need the lights, but they are still useful. I have since confirmed that the sensors were a factory option fitted to this car.

Superb timing releasing this review Mr Lloyd as I am considering the purchase of just such a fine steed. How did you find the seats for comfort? I do like these and the styling has indeed kept a quite modern feel despite the years. Thank you again Sir.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Жыл бұрын
Yes, quite comfortable, although the rear seats are very cramped considering the Superb and Passat also used this platform. The 1990s Audi designs were, in retrospect, some of the most modern around.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting halfway between A4 and A6 size wise. The dullest car ever , I remember nothing about it , no memorable drives or anything. The only thing was when a dealer knocked a door mirror off , and said it was like it when it came in , it wasn’t ! That was a battle I didn’t need . I vowed never to have another VW , the most over rated car brand . Mr Coleman is absolutely correct . A Mitsubishi Gallant of the time would have been a better and more interesting car .

Step from the contemporary Passat into the A4 and the step up in quality will be immediately apparent. They did seem to do the small executive saloon very well. Smooth power delivery and nice gearchange and steering. Very accomplished at the long high speed cruise. Cambelt changes are crucial as is a fresh water pump with each new timing belt. Most of the B5 A4s on this side of the Irish Sea are forbidden fuel powered because of their outstanding fuel economy and our access to cheaper diesel fuel in areas bordering the Republic of Ireland in the EU. This is not a terrible circumstance but is unfortunate when the petrol powered versions are so refined, even the 1.6. Almost all B5s have in excess of 160,000 miles and quite a high percentage have closer to 300,000 miles.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Жыл бұрын
Yes, I have heard that this is one of the cars on the market for which it is most crucial to change the cambelt out of all of them. Definitely put a new water pump in there at the same time. The owner has actually done the cambelt in this one since the video was made. I think that we will be avoiding discussing the forbidden fuel ones around here, sir, as usual...
